Judging Rewards...What is fair?

As a judge, AND as an organizer, I can see both ends of the spectrum here. I've judged many events since POP took control. I've also been very involved with Cities. Sometimes I've gotten compensation that I wasn't expecting one way or another. A couple times I only received a half box, and once I even just got a few packs that were left over, but normally I've received a box or more. For head judging our Canadian Nationals the PTO last year was kind enough to give me more than I'd ever been compensated before. I'd rather not state how much exactly, but it was considerable. As an Organizer, I've also given compensation from what I received. I've actually given out in some cases more than I've received for compensation - probably due to the fact I feel they did a great job and deserved more than I was given. But in other situations I've also split the compenastion fairly as well. Let's face it, it all comes down to A) what was originally given as judge support, B) how good the judge was, and C) what the organizer can afford to give and/or what the Organizer feels compelled to give. There are also any number of other factors which may be involved, including how far the judge has to travel, which may have a bearing upon the compensation. If I had a choice as to what compensation was offered, I'd tie it in with attendance at ALL events. If I know that I'd be offered more if I bring X number of extra players to the events, you can bet your bottom dollar I'd be doing a lot of advertising/phoning people asking if more people would like a ride (by the way, I do that anyway). Sure, I'd like to see a box as compensation on average for the events I judge or organize (except for the large Nationals which are definitely worth more, and in my opinion deserve a trip to Worlds, even if it's only to be used as a judge again there), but if all we do is have a box for compensation regardless of the work we do, .... what incentive is that? Even though Cities are worth more now considering the K value and potential trips to worlds that are available, my opinion is that they don't compare to the importance of the events later on in the schedule, like Regionals and Nationals. Why should we expect a set amount like a box for something that doesn't hold the same importance? The compensation is fine now in my opinion - whether we get a half box or a full box. Let's try and see how it goes with the later events. Pete said we have more CC's available this year than last, so perhaps that may have been a reason why what is available for compensation is the same as last year, instead of more. Thankfully it's not less. Maybe your organizer will feel you are worth more than was given, and help you out more, just like I will for mine. Or perhaps later on this year POP's judge compensation will increase. Let's just wait and see.

In my area, I know like 4 PTOs who give out different judging support for many ppremier events. I was given half a box at cities, as well as all the other judges, including the head judge, and we were all fine with that. I don't get why people have to complain about judging support. There's just too much greed into this.

Unfortunately, a PTO thinks he and his family are being stepped on.

As you know, we're BIG people. We can take some stepping on.

There is one guy in this area (his name is IKE) he helps Team Cook for nothing and he calls himself the Volunteer Gym Leader, and hes a really nice guy and he helps me out too with really cool life advice.

Ike is one of our Judges/Professors in Training. While his son played, Ike sat in with us at one event (Katy DF Prerelease) to see how we do things. While sitting there, he did help do a few things (sort energy, hand out packs, etc). I did give him some packs. Very soon, he will be staffing for us --probably at the Clear Lake City Championships.

PTOs that have spouses that help are great, dont diss them bc they help! I wish my wife would understand more about what Judges do, players do, etc. She just says she is a 'pokemon widow' during certain times of the year bc oldest son and I are gone.

Since we played as a family (except our daughter who's off to Texas Tech), often traveling to places like just to play, it just seemed a natural progression for the rest of the family (except for our young son who always plays) to put playing aside and help out at events when Mike became PTO. It's been a great move for us.

Unfortunately I had to go and made a post after several others were read. But I would like to respond to those.

Last year, about the same time (City Championship season), you openly complained on the 'Gym about some of our events being on Sundays. I'm not sure what you hoped to accomplish by that, but you seemed to imply that we had intentionally planned them that way. If I recall correctly, you also sent your complaint to PUI. The response was simply something to the effect of "if you can't attend on Sunday, then don't".

This year, your complaint is about judge support. Rather than defend each point you made on your original post, I responded in a manner that you apparently expected from us. Regardless of what the support is or what it should be, the bottom line is that if you're not happy with it, then don't judge".

What's it going to be next year? I have a feeling our response will once again be "If you don't like it, then don't..." It may sound familiar, but you do notice the theme here, right?
I would regard them more like a question, not a complaint. However, this is a forum where ideas are asked and questions are raised, even if the content may be controversial. I admit my subjects are cotroversial, and debatable, but the underlying theme is still just a question.

While your post didn't surprise me, I am puzzled about one thing... Where did you hear that judge support for CCs is 18 packs? (Actually, I know where you got that -- I just don't know why you assumed it would apply to you). We NEVER told you that. In fact, I think Mike reminded you that judge support is not always the same for everyone.
The answer to this is easy. I have always done all that I can do to help when asked. There was a conversation, then a PM to refute that.

there was NO REASON WHATSOEVER for the terms "former PTO" and "current PTO" to be in your post. That sets the thread in a totally different direction.
Here is the Quote.

A former PTO in the area always gave his staff a box of cards each, no questions asked. Our current PTO generally gives the head judge (or professor/league leader for the staore in which the tournament is being held) a box for judging and helping out, and I assume his staff splits the rest.
All this says that you each used to give out a box of cards. It is the very point of the thread.

Team Cook, please stay on Topic. What do you feel is just compensation?

You know, given the subject matter and that this is talking money (or packs in lieu of money), I would suggest that the POP Prof forums are a better place to discuss this. There are things that could be discussed about this that really don't belong in a public forum.
Locking.
