Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Legality of Unreleased Cards

With the leaks of Primal Clash, there are new arts of Switch, Escape Rope, Enhanced Hammee, etc. on the market. Section 1.5 of the TCG Rules and Formats document implies these reprints are legal for use, but the line about "easily identifiable" makes me leery. I used Rare Candy PLB at Worlds in 2012 with no issue; are any of these cards not easily identifiable? What would make a card not fit these requirements?

Thanks.

I chose this over ATRT somewhat arbitrarily, please move as needed.

I haven't seen the artwork for these cards, but unless it is very different than the previously released versions, or have significantly different text, I expect they should be usable right away.

I remember discussing this issue I think three years back at St. Louis Regionals, although I can't recall which set it involved (Black & White, maybe?). The set itself was not released yet (so not legal for Regionals), but some promo box sets had hit shelves early (unlike the current Target debacle, these were actually intended to come out about a month earlier than the set) and they contained some staple trainers at the time like Pokémon Communication, and of course players wanted to use them because reasons.

We finally ruled that the spirit of the reprint rule goes both directions in time, and since these were not materially different from the currently legal versions, they were usable at the event.

Yup, as long as there is no significant change in the wording of the cards, I would allow the newer cards to be used.

One doesn't really need to invoke Spirit of the Game.
This occurrence is covered in one of the Tournament Rules documents.

I said spirit of the rule, not game :)

A very strict reading of the reprint rule says reprints from previous expansions can be used, but says nothing about upcoming ones.

We decided (correctly, as it turns out) that a reprint is a reprint, regardless.
