OK, now I can at least partially understand what's driving the PSP's sales for this week. An expansion pack for a popular game sells over Brawl numbers. Plus, one of the better animes of the current season gets a game. Two in the top 10 (top 5) is an achievement for anything Sony in this generation.

PS3 is officially dead. A PS2 game hit the top 10, fully 10 spots above the first PS3 game. PS2 is supposed to be dead and buried. Why keep releasing games for the system? Fact is that it's cheaper to produce PS2 games than PS3 games, the system has a much deeper fan base than the PS3, and the title is almost guaranteed to sell on that system. There are 6 PS2 games in the top 50, but only 3 PS3s. I think we can call it right here.

DS and Wii continue their blistering pace, though slowed slightly by the strong PSP showing this week. Still, I don't expect the PSP to have any legs beyond this year. There simply isn't enough that you can do with the system compared to the DS, and the fan base simply can NEVER be as entrenched as the DS fan base. By the time this is all done, I'm thinking that the PSP will have sold about 15 million, which is impressive, don't get me wrong. But the DS will get somewhere in the range of 25-30 million, the highest selling console of any variety ever.

Oh yeah. Pokemon still has legs. I think that any game with the Pokemon tag on it is an instant million seller on pretty much any system in Japan. That's how popular the franchise is in that country.

Yeah, that was my reaction too
OK, now I KNOW that the Japanese are all insane...
    Proof positive
Just to show how popular MH really is

THIS IS NOT HOW CAUSE AND EFFECT WORKS

Care to explain then? Because, from what I can see, this is the relationship:

Cause: PSP sells gangbusters hardware, no software.

Effect: A game fills that void.

Because that game did so in such a SPECTACULAR fashion, it's fair to call said game the "killer app" of the system. Similar to how Brawl is one of the killer apps of the Wii (along with Fit, Sports, and Play), MHP2 is a killer app of the PSP.

I'm talking about how the initial high sales would have made a lot more sense if this game came out first.

Strange. MHP2 was one of the best selling titles of last year. But, it isn't considered a "killer app" because it never achieved what MHP2G achieved. What is that, you might ask? Complete and total domination of the sales charts, even if only for a short amount of time. All of the Wii games that I mentioned had that kind of domination, either over the short term (Brawl) or over the long term (Sports, Play, Fit all hitting the top 10 for months at a time).
