Mentos + Diet Coke = Cool Experiment

Some friends told me if you open a new diet coke with all the fizz in it and then you drop a mentos in it IT EXPLODES! I was curious so this weekend I went to CVS and bought some mentos and diet coke. I then tried it. As soon as I dropped one mentos piece into the newly sealed diet coke 1 liter bottle. The bottle shot out the drink about 4 feet into the air all over the place like a rocket going into space. It did this for like 3/4 seconds. Did anyone ever try this before? Its a really cool experiment.

I looked online and I also found youtube videos of people testing this. Some of these people got a tube and put 13 mentos in the tube and dropped them all in it at once. So the eruption would go higer. Its kinda like a volcano with lava except it shoots high into the air!

I have done this a lot, one time though, the bottle Literally exploded....there was no water fall, the bottle blew up into pieces, I have no idea how this happened but, it did!!!!
 
It's called nucleation. The carbon dioxide forces itself through the tiny holes in the Mentos or something.
