My first Regional Tournament Experience- NW regionals 2010

This was my first Regionals and only my second big tournament ever. I just started playing pokemon about a month and a half ago. I was playing Jumpluff as several other people were at the regional tournament this year as displayed by my 3 mirror matches over the course of the day. It was a great experience for me and I plan on continuing to better myself so I can finish better than my Top 32 finish that I had at this tournament.

My pokemon experience started the night before when me and my other friends that I went up to the championships spent most of the night before doing last minute playtesting against each other. We had many match-ups covered including gyarados, luxchomp, and Machamp as well as my jumpluff deck. The next morning our plan was to wake-up at 6:30 and then stop to get breakfast on our way but our plans were increased when my friend kris's droid started going crazy because he received 3 text messages at 6 in the morning. So we got up and started getting ready for the long day ahead of us. We rolled into the Salem area around 7:50 and stopped to get our breakfast.. We got to the fairgrounds around 8:30 after sitting at mcdonalds to enjoy our breakfast. This experience was much better than our state's experience when we played Jank decks, didn't sleep the night before, and went to Ihop at 5 in the morning. We got our decks registered and rather than playing pokemon before the tournament my friend kris and I got out a couple of Magic decks and started playing. Then the tournament began.

R1- Blstigatr

Both of us got off to slow starts. I had a crobat G start and he had a totodile start with floatzel on the bench. I proceeded to not draw another pokemon for 3 turns (another crobat G. UGH!!!), and he didn't draw another enrgy after playing 2 energies on his Feraligatr Prime which he prematurely evolved to my luck. I finally drew a luxury ball and searched up Uxie then drew all the pieces I needed from there. I donked him when I had one prize left.
1-0

R2- Cursegar

This was my roughest game of the day. I had a hoppip start and he started with Ghastly. He used pitch dark for his first turn and I drew nothing that I could play the next turn. He then evolved it to Haunter his next turn which allowed me to rare candy my hoppip to Jumpluff. I KO haunter he puts up Spiritomb. He also has another haunter that he evolves to Gengar and gets it set up for Poltergeist. I KO spiritomb he brings up Gengar and Poltergeists me. I reveal 2 BTS, 2 Poke Turn, and 2 Warp Point. Donk'd!
1-1

R3- Tyrannitar

I am going 2nd. She flips Larvitar and I flip Hoppip. She draws and passes turn. I have a super fast hand with a collector, and a communication in hand. as well as rare candy and jumpluff. I attach energy. I use collector to find Crobat, Baltoy, and Uxie. I bench all of them. Rare Candy hoppip to jumpluff. And DONK!!
2-1

R4- Jumpluff Mirror

My start is azelf with hoppip on the bench. I once again have a god hand and move quickly to get a JUmpluff set up and start clearing his board. He has a much slower hand. I go up 3 prizes before he gets his first jumpluff set up. he then KO's mine but I have another set-up on my bench. I bring it up and take 2 more prizes to go up 5-1 in pries. He draws and concedes.
3-1

**After this round got a bit scary for me because it was discovered that the azelf I was borrowing from a friend was FAKE. My heart just sank when I found this out. I was given a warning because I truly did not know that it was fake. It was swiftly replaced and my tournament continued.

R5- Jumpchu

Yet another mirror for me. We traded Jumpluffs a couple turns in a row. Then she got her Shaymin Lv. X set up and I could no longer OHKO her Jumpluffs and that was all she wrote for this match.
3-2

R6- ????

This was a quick game and I never really found out what he was playing. His start was a Baltoy and mine was hoppip. I also had a plus power in hand. I searched up a crobat and put 10 on baltoy, poke turned it for another 10, attached grass energy to hoppip put plus power on it,, and DONK!!!
4-2

R7- Charizard/ninetales/Typhlosion

This match is critical. I have to win for a chance at Top 32. He flips over all fire pokemon and I am terrified. I start with crobat. Long story short this was surprisingly easy for me because he never really drew anything. He never drew energies, his rare candies were prized. He scooped when I had 1 prize left and he hadn't taken any. He finds 3 rare candies in his prizes and shows me his hand, 2 cahrizard, and 2 typhlosion. I feel really bad because he was telling me how excited he was before the match because he had never made a Top before, and he was even more excited when I flipped over grass pokemon.
5-2

Now I find out that 5-2 most likely gets me in and I find out my friend Kris has finished his last match to finish 6-1. We are both incredibly excited because we haven't been playing very long.

Top 32- Jumpluff played by Mindy Lambkee (yes the world champ)

Game 1- I get off to a very fast start and get my first jumpluff set up and start taking out her pokemon.
I get 3 prizes before she gets 1 set-up and then I manage to take it out. She eventually concededs game 1 to me. On to game 2.

Game 2- We both get off to fast starts when BTS hits the board. She is able to sustain her speed though and I eventually stall out. I try to recover but am never able to. I concede game 2 and we move to Game 3.

Game 3- we both have hoppip as a starter. I choose to go 2nd. she draws and passes turn. all I need is an energy and I win the game and match. I go ahead and search up an uxie with communication and I get my hand down to 3 cards so I bench Uxie and set-up for 4. No energies in that but I do get a claydol and another communication. So I use those to search up my other Uxie. I play a couple more cards from my hand and bench uxie to set-up for 4 again still no energies. So I just rare candy it into Jumpluff and pass turn. Neither of us is drawing energies no matter how much we try digging for them. She eventually draws an energy and starts clearing my board. I finally draw an energy and put it on one of my uxies. rather than conceding I opt to let her donk me by using psychic restore and choosing to put it underneath. I bring up my last pokemon another uxie and she KO's it. We shake hands and laugh and have a good time.

The experience of this tourney for me was awesome. And I look forward to meeting many more people and making friends at other tournaments down the road. Thank you to all the organizers, judges, and competitors for making this a truly great experience

My apologies to the rest of my team for forgetting you we had our team "captain" Jacky who brought team morale down and was our scapegoat for all the losses our team suffered. Thanks Jacky. Then there is the man responsible for us playing pokemon HT who went 4-3 and was almost in top 32 with me and kris. Then there is Matt F. who helped us out a ton with helping us come up with decklists and also for helping us get cards for the decks. Thanks guys. Btw Jacky knows I'm just giving him a hard time.
