bulbasnore's old-guy-brain-fade report

I enjoyed the day! Here's a quick report while we wait for complete results.

Looking at the weather, I decided to leave the 6:30 AM & potential 10PM rides for another day, and catch a ride with my son's friend instead. Yah, I'm a wimp, but I didn't crash the bike while tired. I stayed over at my son's place the night before & we did some testing. I wasn't feeling my GG build anymore, so I decided to stick with the Flygon ex ∂ I put together Thursday at league. Got to bed about midnite & got a call about 1 from lookinforwailordex confirming we'd have a ride. LWEX was going to play his trusty Hurricane build. My son was going to play a nice potpourri he cooked up the day before & tuned that night.

Here's my 'thank you to my opponents'/'proof you do not want to see my list' report:

R1 - vs Blizzard with Bansol (heat style)

I was excited to face Ken; we go way back to 2004 and he is a fine player. This man "is my kind of scum, fearless and inventive," to quote the Hutt. I knew if I was to avoid the R1 loss kiss-of-death in a T8 109 player touney, I would have to beat a very good player/deckbuilder. Turn 3 Flygon ex ∂. Sand damage was murder, with a couple two prize turns. I avoided a T1 loss via KO against my lone H. Castform because he could not pull out his plus power. Little did I know this would be the highlight of my competition for the day & that I would completely destroy Ken's resistance. Sorry buddy!

R2 - vs Glenn of Comic Cult League in Norwalk with Magkiss(?)

Turn 4 Flygon ex ∂, but he was able to TGW me just as I was about the lay the Cloyster to protect my bench. Next two turns, I couldn't evolve my two 40 HP bench pokes, so although, I took three prizes in one turn, I couldn't recover after his Togetic ∂ copied my attack and KO'd the first Flygon. G/J Glenn.

R3 - vs Jacob of Granada Hills League - Flail Deck

So, an incremental damage deck like Flygon powers up Whiscash & Gyarados, so I had to be careful. However, my brain fade came in not getting a H. Castform with my Roseanne & instead getting two Trapinch! His Mantine Giant Wave'd my active Trapinch, cutting my recovery later. I had KO'd two guys and was almost set to recover, when he got my active Flygon with two plus powers. Nice job Jacob!

R4 - Francis C - GG - WP with Palkia LvX for GoW

Using Palkia LvX's power (works like Double Gust, Opp gusts you, You gust Opp). He got a horrible start, but was effective at sleeping me with Ralts, which prevented me from activating my Flygon ex ∂ which was set up on the bench. My loss is not interesting, but his combo is! Use Palkia LvX once per turn to activate something from your opponents bench (they get to do the same to you). Then, if you don't like what they brought up, Teleport up with your Gardy Lv.X and then retreat for free (Holon WP + P) for whatever you like. We were tied at time from his slow start, but clearly, he was going to feed anything I had into the shredder! That's how sudden death went. G/J Francis, you are a sportsman and a fine player! Just find a way to speed your setup a bit.

R5 - Kirstin (Gil C.) - Magmortar Typhlosion

Gil is a power trader/seller from Bakersfield, who has two boys that are awesome players & plays a mean deck himself. So, I thought it was cool we got to play. Part way into this, I'd made several errors & scooped. Oww, my brain!

R6 - Nicole P. - Miracle Aroma Venusaur

Nicole is from the Bases League in Lancaster (41 players last Friday!) & her family has a judge, players, Pokeparents & they are just great folks. I have a heart for the grass types myself, so it was fun to see this deck. I had multiple KO turns. The turning point was when she got heads on the heal flip from the main attack - while I finished off her bench, it left me 10HP short of KO'ing her active & the return stroke gave her the game. G/J Nicole & remember to keep playing PKMN even after you go to College!

R7 - Gio C. - Tangrowth/Sceptile

Gio is another player from Lancaster league. He is a friendly guy, but you have to remember that smile goes with some mean decks! Flygon got going, and he scooped after we had some ruling. Full game next time man!

Well, my lack of extended playtesting left me 2-5, but States was an awesome time to catch up with Pokemon friends, cheer on folks I know from inside & outside CA, do a few interviews for the Podcast, network for the next round of events, give Chrisbo a hard time, give SD Pokemom a hug and enjoy my son going 5-0 before finishing 5-2 (#10/109). Every opponent told him, "nice deck". It was his own creation, but with influence from the Bartlett & Hoff styles at our league (so, shout out to John (T8), Sean (T8), David & Prof Dan).

Props
Marshstomp - 5-0 and 10th. Cool! Better result next time!
Procuring secret surprise for Mrs. bulbasnore by falling for the old "I'll tell you what I want for it later," gambit. Thanks, Lianne!
California Players and Guests - good fun, no tempers
People who brought the game consoles :thumb:
LWEX for driving - you don't know how cool that was for me, man.
PTE & staff - on time start & smooth event!
kirbypopstarhero for lending me a Mew * ∂

Slops
Forgetting to bring in my kit & get Barbara's Professor Card (Regionals!)
Almost walking out with kirbypopstarhero's Mew * ∂
Players who don't shower and then hang out by the pairings.
No one gave "Abraham, Martin & John" a ride from Vegas to the event.
Chickening out on riding the 900 to the event; maybe next year.
