Pokemon Organized Play has made it known to Tournament Organizers that "high roll" is not an acceptible alternative to flipping a coin to determin who will start the game. Rolling a die for "heads/tails" is still a valid option. Some Organizers have been enforcing this since Worlds 2007 where it was not allowed. POP spokesmen are firm that this is not a change as the rules have always called for a "heads/tails" determination.

Players should expect increased enforcement of the correct game action and it will be 100% enforced at the upcoming Nationals and Worlds events.

Remember, you can still use dice rolls to start the game, they just have to be evens = heads and odds = tails.

Very interesting, PokePop. I have never known this, but why?

Because the rule book says "flip a coin".....ergo, if you use a die, must be like heads/tails.

I'm mad. At Regionals, I kept on saying to the judges "I thought high role isn't allowed" They said it was.

WELL THIS JUST SUCKS!!! But, does anyone know-if you do "heads/tails", and you call heads and it comes out heads, do you chose to go first or second or do you automatically go first.

Sam: The winner of the flip or roll still goes 1st.....no choices in Swiss.

Why does it suck?? The odds are the same folks. There just cannot be ties now.

i know at states they had mentioned it to us. I started carrying around a coin just for that. The rest of the time, i'll use a dice.

I like high roll ... I don't like this change & it is a change.

Will the Japanese still be allowed to do RPS to see who starts? That's not in the rulebook either.

Oh well. Doesn't bother me too much, so I've no concerns. As long as there's a way to tell who goes first and fairly, I'll continue to do it.

It makes sense. The rules say to flip a coin to see who goes first. A coin flips just heads or tails. By using high roll, we are changing the system from heads/tails to a comparison of two rolls.

I'm guessing the way it is supposed to be done is one player flip the coin while the other calls it in the air, if they guess right, they go first, if not, they go second?

God. Yet another ruling that severely impacts the way I play. At least half my victories against players 8 years of age and younger are a direct result of them not understanding that I'm rolling a twenty-sider against their six-sider at the start of the game.

Probably means I can't tell them anymore that 1-18 is heads, the rest is tails, right?

This was announced at our States in March. It wasn't a problem for me, because I don't care. But for whatever reason, other people hate it. Get over it people, it means now there is only a 50-50 chance of going first or not. I like, dice myself, because when I flip a coin, it usually ends up getting labled "MIA".(missing in action)

iirc in my finals match vs. hatter we did highest roll to see who went first in the first game... and with all the judges around, nobody said anything.

Personally, I don't see why there's anything wrong with highest roll, but im sure they have their reasons.

    high rolls are awesome...And easier....

    let me get this straight

if opponent said heads... and i rolled heads, do i go first ?
if opponent said heads, and i roll tails. do i go firsT?
if opponent said tails, and i rolls heads, go i go first?
if opponent said tails, and i rolls tails, go i go firsT?

    oh IM SO stupid.

yet another way/rule that screws up the game. It really doesn't screw it up but just a stupid decision/rule, IMO. I just like taking low blows at the people who run this game because I strongly believe that a competitive Master could do a better job.

This is kind like the Wager call of not allowing to high roll if both players agree to it. That one I could agree a little bit more with, this one is just plain stupid.

you're forgetting that allowing the use of dice AT ALL is a concession on japan's part...
