Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Opening Pokemon (Article) Featuring MD Updates

Why are people saying T2 Claydol isn't much? By turn two, if you play energy normally and such, you have the potential to draw a lot of cards on that T2. Because of this, T2 Claydol also becomes T2 Kirlia/Gardevoir/Magmortar/Firestarter evolutions. Making your set up as a whole, superior to that of a Stantler set up, as they fetch a supporter for their basics on T1, Play it on T2, and evolve them on T3, and begin their set up at that point. Furthermore, Playing Stantler forces you to use a supporter for your basics, while with Pachirisu you can Call for three basics, and use Celio for the Claydol, or maybe a Steven's advice after you use Cosmic Power.

The only possibly way I could ever see Stantler as better than Pachirisu, is in a deck with no energy.

Getting Claydol out is moreso the problem with it. Pachi is a good Pokémon to set up Claydol, since it gets Baltoy out and it can deal with Cessation Crystal.
Also, (a) Sableye can help, because disable can stop Psychic lock. Since that's Gardy's only attack (unless it's a lv.X already), they will be forced to either switch, or just plain wate their time while you set up. I only recomend having one Sableye, because psychic lock is not in every deck.

If I start out with Sentret in a Furret build on G&G, I almost always, every game, no matter what, get the T2 Furret as well. There isn't much a difference with getting Claydol out T2, save for the every once in a while 1/2 cards I pull with Sentret.

The thing about Claydol is making sure nothing shuts it down. With a Furret, you've got backup, so you don't need to worry about Psychic lock or Cessation Crystal.

However, you do have to worry about Wager, which is much less predictable than Psy Lock or Cess (which isn't even played anymore).

For your imformation moza, Smeargle is no longer at the top of the list. I say (and this goes for everyone) that you should read the article or at least make sure there aren't major changes before you post sarcasm.

there's two chingling in the article. now about the stantler pachi discussion I would go pachi because it has a better chance of getting you a T2 claydol and you would have other basics that you can set up with.

Mustof missed the Chinling when I shifted everything around. Thanks!

Chatot much? An excellent starter in speed decks that don't want to waste that early energy. One or two can be played with other starters which Chatot can easily retreat for. Chatot is a decent starter for when you get a crappy hand as well. Chatot is great mid-late game to bring up for your own warp points or after one of your Pokemon gets KO'd.

Why the heck would you rather send up a 60 HP pokemon mid game to refresh you hand when you can use this LOVELY supporter named CopyCat to do the same thing, still have an attack, and still be able to Claydol/ W/E.

You don't attack with it, you use the free retreat to give yourself time to decide what to do and/or see if your draw for the turn affects your decisions. Just like you would with any other card that has free retreat, except it can be run globally.

Fair point. And if you don't attack with it, why are you posting this in the OPENING POKEMON ARTICLE?

Because it doubles as an opening pokemon as well. Togekiss decks for instance have this irratating tendency to have HORRID opening hands. Chatot can help get around that, unlike Baltoy whose Psychic Balance is rarely being used because of the dependency on the ability to decrease your hand size first.
A starter who's actually useful mid-game as well is probably worth mentioning. Is it a safe starter? Compared to stuff like Phione, not really. But does it have several unique aspects? Yeah. Sounds like its worth mentioning at least in the article.

I don't know if I'd agree with Pachirisu being outdated. It's like saying Tauros is better then Pachirisu; Call isn't 100% better then Pachi. Are there decks that want three pokemon on the bench, ready to evolve next turn? Yeah. Magmortar comes to mind, as does Skittles. Those decks probably want Pachirisu more then they want Call Energy. :/ Getting three pokemon over getting two can make a difference. ...Plus, the whole "Pachi is searchable" stuff too. It's not like Corsola who's beaten in EVERY WAY by Pachirisu (except for the Fighting Weakness, assuming someone figures out how to make Kabutops good <_<").

Stantler's name is mispelt for some reason as Stanler. Hm.
I noticed that the Mawile section doesn't mention the Turn1 Cessation Crystal that's ensured with Mawile. Hm. After all, being able to attach tools directly to pokemon with Mining... Just... Might be a good reason to consider it over Stantler :/ It's a bit better then Lapras in a Lock Deck, since Lapras doesn't attach the Tool right away. (plus the colorless energy cost, rather then water)

Bit surprised that Lunatone/Solrock or Rotom aren't mentioned. I guess Rotom's more of a recovery guy then a starting pokemon, but Luna/Sol's fairly nice for setting up certain decks (Garchomp <_<).

Claydol (Great Encounters)
It may not be your first choice of an opener, but it's still a great card. The GE baltoy can act as a Copycat, allowing you to get Claydol and needed cards quickly. But the ideal place to have Claydol is safe on the bench, where you can use its power.
Cosmic power lets you get 6 cards, for discarding 1 or 2 cards. This is great for getting energy and speeding things up

i mest up on clay dol u dnt discard u put them at the bottom of ur deck lol :eek:

well why isnt relicanth here ? i think he should be here since it is a great starter for fossil decks..

And yes isnt the pachi overhype gone yet ? it isnt such a great card..

Fair point. And if you don't attack with it, why are you posting this in the OPENING POKEMON ARTICLE?

Because if you start with it at the beginning of the game, and you have a bad hand, you can attack with it. Plus, I would still consider it a good starter in speed decks, where it can increase consistency without wasting early energy attachments. In this rare case it does not always have to attack to do something as a starter, but it can if need be.
