Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Playing a deck that makes you hated?

Playing to win and playing to have fun are two different things that aren’t really related to each other. You can do one, both, or neither at the same time.

Playing to Win is good in that it teaches competitiveness, reaching goals, and critical thinking. When you are focused on winning you work to make yourself a better person by improving your skills and you learn about how you can control the environment around you. It’s a very positive thing for the most part. The dark side is when you are focused on winning to the exclusion of all else, but that a sickness of the mind that has little to do with a true winning attitude.

Playing for Fun is good since it teaches you about building friendship, doing things you like, and enjoying life. When you are focused on having fun you work to make both yourself and others happy by your demeanor and actions. Again this is a very positive thing for the most part. The bad sides of being too focused on playing for fun involve bowing to peer pressure when maybe you shouldn’t or being too focused on your own enjoyment to the detriment of others, but really neither one of these is really reflective of a true positive attitude.

Play for Fun and Play to Win ... IMHO you really get more out of the game when you do both.

That's true you don't want to be too friendly during a big tournament because wining is a goal, and there is nothing wrong with competitiveness. Just no one should let it get out of hand ether.

Simple as that.
I don't play to win the game. I play because I enjoy meeting new people and the card game is just SO fun.....lol, I am soooo joking. I play to win the game. People that say, "I play pokemon to have fun" probably suck at pokemon. Could you imagine someone saying, "I play to win a game" that hasn't won a tournament?

I do enjoy meeting new people in tournaments.

You play to win the game.

Simple is that.

Open up your mind, geez. Not everyone is play to win. [When I did play] I always enjoyed the events with alot of people. It's just more fun. Meanwhile the "play to win" people like the small turnouts because it's less competition.
I like the social aspect of Pokemon... and if I go to a tourney and see like 10 people I'll leave, cuz that's just boooring lol.

* And no I don't suck. ;)

Prolly not everyone plays to win the game but, I am sure 80% of the pokemon population plays to win the game. I play to win and I would rather it be a big field of people, not 10. More points....DUH!!!

*Of course you don't:lol::lol::lol:

Sigh... Someone please tell me why people make stupid statements without any basis...

Quite a lot of members on PokeGym play Pokemon for fun and they sure don't suck.

it is my opinion, deal!!!

I kinda enjoy playing, but I would rather win than just have fun. unless I am with my friends then I don't care if I win, thats when I play for fun, I am a serious player when it is tourny time.

I can say this right back at you, "Sigh... Someone please tell me why people make stupid statements without any basis... "
Because you said this, "Quite a lot of members on PokeGym play Pokemon for fun and they sure don't suck."

Practice what you preach!!!

Aaahahah, you're funny. The best players spend their whole season playing towards WORLDS, which is a large, complex tournament in itself. You're crazy to think the X,000 of us regularly competitive players dislike large events.

But yeah, I say play a deck, even if it makes you "hated." Shedinja won solely on time manipulation, Honchkrow wins entirely on savaging a person's hand, and well, people just plain hate Mario! But if those three, or anything like them, were the theoretical BDIF, then of course you should play said deck if you want to.

Breloom milotic didn't buddy, neither did wailord aggron ex =D

woah woah woah. Maybe he didnt win with aggron ex /wailord but I won a city with it x-0 it was so goooooood.

I play whatever I want to play. If its a disruption deck that day then bad beat.

I played 4 different decks at 4 states. I love variety.

How transparent. "I just play to have fun" is the most feeble defense offered by people who simply can't win on a regular basis.

Keep in mind, games were invented for enterainment to have fun. So therefore, one can infer, if you are playing a game for fun, you aren't doing anything wrong.

Never have, probably never will. Makes me terrible at arguments, but, I really couldn't care less.

Everyone has different opinions and different views on the game.

I believe, what Marril is trying to get across is, is that when you enter a tournament, you are there to compete for a title, so youre playing to win by all technical means- but your heart is taking you there to see your friends you only see once a blue moon. I don't show up to nationals just to talk to Cameron and Adam- I go to talk to them and I do plan to win- otherwise I wouldn't pay the $500 just to travel and enter the comp- i'd just sit around and talk to Adam and Cam all day :p

Technically, you're ALWAYS playing to win in any competitive event which is why you enter and play- but you travel and go to those events to see your friends and play the game. So playing the game will always fall under both categories- trying your best and having fun :)

On topic- You should play with what you feel comfortable with. I don't think people dislike you, people dislike what you play and choose not to play you as a result. It's their problem if their not willing to try and beat your deck- when I find a deck I cant beat because it's cheap- I sure as heck don't like it, but it gives me a focus- try and beat the damned thing. Unfortunately, some people are short tempered or not as intellectual or patient as others, so they just get frustrated and take it out on you. Their problem, not yours- play the game how you play it- thats how you enjoy Pokemon. You will still have friends that support you no matter what you play (in most cases people do), so just leave it at that.

I once played against a PK Glalie deck. It was the worst deck I ever saw but I didn't get one flip, 11 turns no energy. I got beat so bad I was actually laughing. Fun is the best and the only reason we should all play.

It's the prizes u get after winning that motivates good players to come up with great deck ideas. If someone (or, everyone) doesnt ' play to win' , then this game would be less interesting.

No.

What I'm getting across is that even in the most casual of games, when you shuffle up and start playing, you would generally answer the "are you attempting to win through your ingame actions?" question with "yes".

In a tournament setting, winning is generally a higher priority than it is in casual games, which is why "playing to win" is then taken to mean "playing with the intent of winning a prize"—whether it be a specific reward for winning, or an increased ranking, or merely the prestige of top Xing.

But in general, almost everyone "plays to win".

Basically every one plays to win and most play to have fun. A game dose need a winner or else no one would ever enjoy playing. Though you can still have fun while you try to win.
