Hello Pokegym! Most of you probably don't know me but I'm darksoulSP, an avid competitive TCG player. I know that Pokegym is similarly focused on the TCG, but this is an important anouncement that hopefully people will see and respond to.

More importantly, in a few weeks, my school's Pokemon Club is hosting a Catchathon to try and raise money for Japanese relief. A bit of a shame that the Speed Gamers did something similar not too long ago since I've had this planned for awhile, but hopefully their efforts will have inspired others to help donate to the cause.

What is the Catchathon? We aim to capture all 649 Pokemon (minus the event legendaries) in Black and White versions over 4 nonstop days using one version of every Pokemon handheld game starting with Ruby and Saphire. No emulators or cheating/external devices will be used, so everything about it will be legitamate. The only "abuses" will be DS time changing for Seasons in B/W and D/P/P's Pal Park, as well as Emerald version cloning (although that is more debatable, even if it is internal).

We aim to stream the data of the 96 hours over the computer, just like the Speed Gamers, but since the game data is 100% legitamate and not emulated, there may be shaky camera work. Nevertheless, I urge you to watch our live footage and I hope that it will convince you to pledge money for the cause! Please, donate even a dollar once the event is up and running. Every little cent counts. I will put this same thread over multiple sites, but please, spread the word! If I could even get Front Page Coverage, that would be phenomonal. I owe a lot to pokegym and especially to Japan, and I know a lot of you feel the same way.

One last note! I plan on using a Paypal account to obtain the pledge money and I also plan on using a Wells Fargo bank account to directly donate the money to Japan. If anyone has a better idea of how to give them the money or, especially, run the event better, PLEASE let me know! Spread the word around and save up some money for the Catchathon! Thank you for your time!

You shouldn't need to change seasons to beat the game or catch all the pokemon. The biggest thing I can think is that you'd MAYBE need it to get Cubchoo and Cryoginal faster, but besides that, you shouldn't need to change the season.

I'll check back once you have a more solid plan for how to pledge money.

Like the site bullados mentioned - using Chipin to collect donations will ensure that the money IS going to the charity.

Another thing - you don't need to have a shaky camera if you have the correct equipment - at least for the GBA games. The gameboy player for Gamecube will allow you to have the game played on a television and with a video splitter you can have it on the TV and on computer for streaming.

For DS games i do not know how to avoid the shaky camera issue.

Does the Wii have connectivity with the DS games and/or system? Does PBR allow you to play the DS games on a TV screen?

    Sadly, it does not.

Actually, you shouldn't even need to change the time/date for Pal Park either, since you can do it an unlimited ammount of times a day in HGSS. In theory, date changing isn;t needed, in reality, it might be nice just for cubchoo/cryognial.

Thank you for the questions and support! :D

@RB Golbat: I did not know that! I thought some Pokemon were season exclusive, but in that case, that won't be needed! I do know that HG/SS has no limit for Pal Park, so perhaps we will keep it at that to have no DS time changing whatsoever.

@Ultimatdra: We are indeed using a Gameboy Playerm but yes, sadly there will be a shaky DS cam.

@Politoed: Does Chipin count? We will probably use that, thanks to everyone's advice!

Really, thank you so much for the questions! Any more I can answer? :))

Here's a suggestion that Mario Marathon used, and I think it's a very good one for increasing donations...

Set up donation levels for each individual Pokemon caught, evolved, or placed into the Dex. Mario Marathon uses $0.50 as a starting point for their first level, and increases their cost per level by 1% for each additional level. They have 786 levels and will make over $126,000 if they make all of those levels. For 649, their cost is $31,831.71, and if history is any indication, they'll make that very easily. I believe their massive increase from year 2 to year 3 (of over 50k) was the institution of donation levels. Obviously, you don't have to (and probably don't want to) go that high for a first year. I'd suggest starting out at $0.25 for the first Pokemon, and increase the level for each Pokemon by 1% times the previous level, similar to how MM and Desert Bus for Hope do theirs.

So the donation chart would look something like this...

    $0.25 for the first
    $0.50 TOTAL for the second (.25 + .253, rounded)
    $0.76 TOTAL for the third (.50 + .256, rounded)
    $1.02 TOTAL for the forth (.76 + .259, rounded)

etc, etc. You can probably do this better on a calculator with more than 3 significant digits, but I'm hoping you get the point from this little exercise. You'll probably end up with much, much more than you'd expect doing things this way. Good luck!

Oh yeah. Multiple cameras! All streaming at once! Especially if you're using multiple people and multiple DSs at the same time to do this. I'm not sure how cheap this is, but you can probably find a small snake camera that you can affix to the top of your DS and have it simply record anything you find.

    Call-ins.

    Raffles.

Basically, look at what Mario Marathon and Desert Bus have done successfully and emulate it for Pokemon to the best of your ability.

Just as an FYI, the 100 mark would net you $34.29, while the 200 mark would grab $159.73, and the 300 mark would net $474.66, 400 for $1326.48, 500 for $3630.51, 600 for $9862.48, and the full 649 for $16075.26 if you started at $0.25 with 1% increase per catch. And you can still go beyond that with all the different Formes, of which there are probably over 100. All hail the wonders of exponential (geometric?) growth ^_^.

To get $2000, you'd have 441 catches. It goes up quickly from there.

Basically, you'd work up a nice little buffer with the early catches, as you can probably get the first 150 or so for only $100. But, by the time you reach 373 catches, you'll be in the 4 digit areas of donations, and that's not a small sum. By the end, you'll have probably collected close to 5 figures for the 649 Pokemon.Consider that MM has only once cracked 50k, and that Desert Bus needed a year before hitting 5 figures.

Same. Best bit is that it all goes to Japan.
I REALLY want to donate, but I don't have much money. Couple of quid or so. But If I can, I will. After all, that could make the difference between someone having water or not.

Bullados, what would the figure be at 636? That's the amount of non-Event Pokemon there are, which we are capturing.

And Nintendan: That's exactly the mindset we want people to have! Even something as meager as a dollar or two can really add up.

The support from the 'Gym is very reassuring! Now if only I could get this on the front page... :p

Awww, hell. I got no clue. It took me about an hour to do that much by hand. Probably somewhere in the 14-15k range, I'd guess.

I'd love to help any way I can, this sounds interesting!
I could trade you guys a few of my event pokemon so you can get everything.

@Ultimatedra: Sounds perfect to me! We'll get everything done soon! :)

Oh! The concept is that everything we catch will be done so completely from scratch, which is why we are axing the events and Zorua/ark from the show. If we can finish early, however, that sounds like an awesome idea!

Use a Tripod or something similar to attached a camera and to avoid a shaky recording for the DS screens
