Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Potential problem with TMS

I’m posting this under a screen name that is not my normal screen name because I don’t want to unnecessarily offend anyone who was involved in this tournament. It is possible that the TO (or others) involved will be able to figure out who I am and what tournament I’ll be referring to. If they do I’d like to ask them not to identify the specifics of the themselves or the tournament because this is not about complaining or reporting improprieties. This is simply about finding a possible problem with TMS. It is possible that there was an irregularity in the pairings of the seventh and final round of a TRR prerelease that I and a friend attended recently. (I’ve waited awhile to post this so as to help keep anonymity)

The TO asked me what the number of rounds should be for a 50 person tournament. They suggested seven. I’m a relatively new TO so I couldn’t remember exactly what it should be. I knew that I had just seen the recommendations on line but couldn’t remember where I saw them. (I’ve since discovered the reason we couldn’t find them was because he wasn’t signed into his My Pokemon account when we were looking) It should have been 6 rounds with a cut to top 16. He decided on 7 rounds because we couldn’t find it.

The top six ranked players were:

Player A - 1st place 6-0-0
Player B - 2nd place 5-1-0 (my friend)
Player C - 3rd place 5-1-0
Player D - 4th place 5-1-0
Player E - 5th place 5-1-0
Player F - 6th place 5-1-0

There were no other players at 5-1-0.

As they were posting them they announced if you don’t like the way you’re paired blame the computer.
The pairings they posted were as follows:

A vs. F
B vs. C
D vs. E

I believe it should have been:

A vs. B
C vs. D
E vs. F

Even if it was a cut to top 6 it would have been:
A vs. F
B vs. E
C vs. D

Was this caused by an error in the TMS, by the addition of the extra round, or for another reason (that I’m not sure that I want to say in fear of it being seen as an accusation)?

This kind of thing happened also during one of my tournament.
But, when checking out the standings, I discovered that the TMS pairs players with the same result, in alphabetical order. Our players with same result, had also the same Tiebreakers.

Hope that helps :)

It might've been that some of the players had played each other earlier in the tourney, and the computer defaulted to the next available person on the list.

That really shouldnt make a dif. if players A and B have played each other in a situation like thsi they should be paired agianst each other before any other players got paired no matter what. Atleast thats they way it should be.

without the whole tournament's pairings it is difficult to comment other than say that TMS does some unusual things sometimes. versions up to 1.15 have a nasty habit of pairing players who have already played. i don't know if 1.16 fixed this.

1.16 did not fix this problem. We ran into it at the last round of Nationals for 15+. Normally, if an event does not do a Top Elimination Cut, one extra round of Swiss is added to ensure that there isn't a clump of players at the top end of the spectrum and that the standings are more clear cut. No, this isn't in the floor rules, but has been a long standing standard in this community as well as with other games. However, unless we know all of the pairings and match results for the entire tournament, there's now way to say what happened.
