Putting a card in play vs. from hand to bench, and then some...

What is the difference between "putting a pokemon in play" (like say, Lugia Legend) and taking a pokemon from my hand to the bench (like...Shaymin, etc)?

Also, when I have a poke-body or poke-power that says, "When you place this pokemon from your hand to your bench" do you have to do that action RIGHT THEN or can you do it any time during your turn?

(BTW, I think i'm beginning to figure this out and I think this is going to be one of those lame questions where you answer something like, "JUST DO WHAT THE FREAKING CARD SAYS!!!! IT SAYS WHEN YOU MOVE IT ONTO YOUR BENCH! DO IT RIGHT THEN! OTHERWISE IT WOULD HAVE SAID "WHENEVER THE HECK YOU FEEL LIKE IT DURING YOUR TURN BLAH BLAH BLAH.")

Okay, you would never answer that way, but I don't know how you keep from not doing it! too funny! Really appreciate your help!

thanks!

No difference.

Right then.

Correction to the first one.

Putting into play means a card is now in the play field. It might have gotten their from various methods.
Playing from the hand is the most common way to get a card into play.
