Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Rare (Unique?) Base Set Error Card

Do you know the specifics to why he is suspended? If it is strictly because of the fake Pre Raichu that would be absolutely horrible.

Hey pokepop I don't think I saw a response from you on whether meeting at the battle roads on the 26 was ok?

Also, if it end up fake, I will post another YouTube burning it to make every one happy:biggrin:. I've examined it next to some other cards and cannot find any difference. Is it not possible that the rest of this sheet didn't pass quality control?

Missed you today.
I had brought my old Magneton cards for comparison.

I'm so sorry I flaked out on you that day...and the year or so since. I recently saw a post on this forum from 2005 about another member pulling a non-holo magneton from a base set pack.

I have decided I am willing to mail this card to you pokepop, if you are still interested in checking it out and verifying it for the community.

here is the post for reference: http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?15780-Complete-Error-amp-Misprint-Card-Listing&p=203694&viewfull=1#post203694

I have the card. Got it yesterday. Reviewing it now. So good signs, some curious signs. Have to sort them out.

Well. This was very interesting.

First, I checked the light test.
No light passes through with a normal wattage bulb. That's good.
With a bright light, some passes through, looking mottled.
I compared this with a non-holo shadowless card and it is similar to that. That's good.
Using a magnifying glass, I check the edges for the black sandwiched layer.
For those unfamiliar, Pokemon cards are made from three layers. Two white layers sandwich a black layer.
That black layer blocks most light from passing through the card.
The card does have a black layer. That's good.
At this point, things were looking very good. I wasn't expecting it to pass those tests.

Next, I start looking at the printing.
The printing pattern matches well with the Magneton card that I have. Ink dots are laid down in a correct pattern. That's good.
I look at the printing on the energy symbols. This is not so good. The black shadowing on the Energy symbols is much darker on the test card.
Muddier. This is a concern.
The finish on the card is matte. Compared to a non-holo shadowless card, which has a semi-gloss finish.
However, when compared to a holo card, that is also matte. So, all in all, this is not a concern.

The final thing that I looked at was the border. I noticed that the border is a different color that either of the shadowless cards I am using as reference.
It is not a slight variation. It is a different yellow. I have looked through many, many cards of the era, and have found absolutely none that use this yellow color for the border. It is so wrong, that I find it to be a sticking point.
Combining the muddy printing on the Energy symbols with this wrong border color, I find that I cannot verify this card to be real.
It may very well be a real Pokemon card. The card stock seems to be correct.
However, that border just doesn't match up with what it is supposed to be, and that keeps me from saying that this is a real Base Set shadowless error Magneton.

Thank you for taking the time and detailing the process for me/us.

I noticed the border as well. I came to the conclusion that the card was meant to be a foil, but the foil insert or layer didn't get added. So it must have changed the color. The artwork behind the magneton with the weird blobs that the foil would usually make shine gave me the same idea.

I took that into account, but the color was just so off on that and nothing else, I couldn't accept it.

So... I still have this card. It is verified to be on real card stock by pokepop. anyone else interested? anything else like it pop up in the time since?

Haven't seen or heard of anything similar since.

Seems really unfortunate for both the community and myself that this "dark persian" happened to be around the same time I posted this. My wife still carries a dark persian from the team rocket set in her bag daily because she thought me being accused of someone named dark persian is hilarious.

If anyone else is interested in checking out the card. let me know!
