It was a GREAT day for the Prerelease at the THUNDER GYM but in Oregon a sunny day can be strong competition and IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SUNNY DAY. I think that was the main reason we only had 55 people attend, but it was a great crowd. We also had 20 stay for booster drafting, half of those did a Solomon draft - great fun!

Total attendance 55

We had 20 stay for a Booster draft.

This is up from the 45 we had for the 2nd Platinum prerelease in the Portland area last February.

What a finish for the Rising Rivals Prerelease series in Oregon. There was so much energy in the room we rocked the house for the ENTIRE tournament. The WOW tournament in the other room didn't know what hit them! Then we had 18 stay for booster drafting, with 8 of them trying out the Solomon draft format - great fun!

Total attendance 79

18 stayed for the Booster draft.

This is up from the 59 we had for the Platinum prerelease in Salem.

Was that at Blue Highway Games?

What is a "Theme Deck Challenge" anyway? How does it compare to a pre-release? How is it similar and how does it differ?

I'm sick with the flu and so was unable to take my grandson to Blue Highway that morning. But he talked his mom into taking him. He thought it was going to be a regular Pokmon League, but when he got home he called me and said it had been a Pre-Release.

The last time I had checked (about a year ago) Blue Highway couldn't get permission to hold a pre-release (which bummed me out because I don't have a car so our local pre-releases are out of reach for me) .

So I'm curious to find out exactly what went on up there last Saturday.

The Theme Deck Challenge is an alternative choice for new players during a Pre release. For the same $$ as a regular prerlease, where players build their own 40 card deck using the packs they receive, in a theme deck challenge players play a theme deck and after ward are given booster packs as a participation sport.

Here is a write up from the Pokemon Website:

For the Theme Deck Challenge, registration costs are the same as for the standard event, but players receive a theme deck from Platinum—Rising Rivals to play in the event. At the end of the event, all participants receive 4 booster packs.
The Theme Deck Challenge uses standard Swiss pairings, not Age-Modified Swiss.

Hope this helps...

Both of my events - Orangeville Ontario, and Barrie Ontario had over 30 players each - in fact a combined total of 65 players, which is a 16% gain from last prerelease - which in itself was over a 45% increase from Stormfront. Side events averaged well over half of the players in the main event. Added to that the draw of the Beat the Champ side event was well received as well, even though my latest Champ was unbeaten - totally unblemished record. Way to go Alaric!

Hey wait until next prerelease and see what we have in store! Plans already in motion ... I bet there'll be an even greater increase!

Thanks for the info, Pokeplayer!

It looks like the Theme Deck Challenge is aimed at beginners, and my grandson and I have been playing together (off and on) for over a year, so we'd like to attend a regualr pre-release.

I don't have a car, and due to chronic health problems, the long bus rides, on multiple buses, to the Western Washington pre-release venues out in the hinterlands is more than I could handle these days.

I'm wondering whom I could write to try to persuade the powers that be to hold a pre-release in Seattle one of these days.

Although it may seem that it is geared toward beginners, what I find is that it is geared toward those who haven't done a prerelease before. There is a difference. The real reason I say that is that it is quite the challenge to open the packs, and make a 40 card deck within the 30min limit. Choosing the right cards, weighing many factors is hard, unless you have some knowledge of what is in the set, and even then you may end up being surprised - like not knowing the Snorlax Lv X would be in the set. Also sometimes PTO's will run some of these challenges with full cards (give out the deck, and the packs, and tell you to tweek the deck), so hey, try it out. You may like what you see. This time the decks had some decent supporters (except for Mom's Kindness), so you never know what may happen.
