I'm a firm believer in something I've called the "Glacius Syndrome": The Beat-em-up character you're best with at first rarely ends up being your best overall. For those of you that got the Glacius reference, I ended up being best with Fulgore. Why am I saying this? Because Pikachu was who I started with. Now, I can barely use him. I prefer Pichu. His jackhammering run is just so unsettling the opponent won't be able to move before he's being savaged to death. Anyhow:
5: Ice Climbers: Innitially my brother's #3, they fell victim to Glacius syndrome and I picked them up. They're quite good. Their agility is good, their smashes are their strongest moves, but their big plus is the sheer unpredictability two targets results in. Confuse the opponent in a chaotic flurry of hammers and glaciers and he'll never get a strike in.
4: Peach: Innitially my #2, she's falling fast, but I just won't let her leave the top five because her model is just so cool. So unlike the dumb-blonde Peach in previous games. Gamewise, she's nearly impossible to get rid of; it's actually scoring a hit on the opponent that's difficult. The only special that's really useful is her parasol uppercut.
3: Dr. Mario: Even his Smash Bio says he's basically identical to Mario, which led myself and my brother to hate him as a waste of a character. I took him out now and then just to annoy my brother, and became pretty good. He's solid, with no useless specials at all, but I still can't seem to master Mario. Then there's the theme tune. Good stuff.
2: Ness: I'm quirky. Ever since Marvel vs Capcom 2, I tend to adopt the worst character as an official team member because who the heck would see it coming? Also to annoy my brother. I'm big on that. Hence, Ness' nickname as "Danspawn". The world's foremost freestyle ankle surgeon has pretty much no useable specials, abysmal range and weak power. His mid-air manoeuverability keeps him alive far longer than is decent, however, and he's great at getting chips in. Particularly the baseball-bat/ankle type.
1: Yoshi: Glacius Syndrome. Don't know how the heck I became good with this guy. Never intended to be. I adopted a speciality at Smash attacks early on, and his are very good, so maybe that's it. His jump is one of the highest in the game (not as high as Falco's) but also has terrific air control. This is useful when he has a great butt-slam and an Egg-roll that can make for a big surprise when blotting out the sun.
Also-Rans: Both my brother and I picked up Mewtwo as soon as he became available. I've since dropped him; his movement is great, but his attacks are so slow that he'll take a beating. Best vertical throw in the game, though. Captain Falcon is fast and has some deadly moves, but his speed makes him a leeetle hard to control, and his basic move range is poor. Jigglypuff tends to kill herself a lot with that terrifying Rollout move - lots of "Oh God, what did I press!?!" moments make for a fun game. Luigi's cool but his idiotic run-punch really kills his usefulness. Marth is awesome to control, but his moves are weak and he tends to get stuck waving his sword around.
I sure can talk when I'm allowed to.
