Swedish Nationals Report- 1st Place Masters

Nationals in Sweden took place yesterday and I wanted to share with you guys how my day went. I have had a good season so far, with 3 states wins and 2 cities wins and a good ranking so the ranking invite was secured no matter how I did in nationals.

I was testing a lot from the week before Norway nationals until Friday before my nationals. I tested most with David from Norway and Isac from Sweden. Darkrai was pretty much the main deck we tested and all of us ended up playing it for our nationals, and very similar lists.

The deck we choose were Darkrai/Mewtwo. It tested really good and our lists didn’t change much during testing, just a couple of cards. One big decision we had to make was the Ultra Ball vs Dual Ball and Eviolite vs Dark Claw. All of us ended up playing Dual Ball and Dark Claw.

I showed up early to help with deckcheck. The deckchecks finished faster than usual so we could start the tournament almost at the time we wanted.

Juniors had 8 players (3 rounds+top2), seniors 11 players (4 rounds+top2) and masters 26 players(4 rounds+top4). 2 juniors, 2 seniors and 1 masters(me) had earned byes from states. The first round began and I walked around a bit and watched what people was playing today and got pretty happy with what I saw, only a couple of decks running fighting in it. When some of my friends finished the round we went to get some lunch.

Now onto the rest of the games, all games were run best of 3:

Round 2, Linda, Reshiram/Typhlosion/Other stuff
As Linda said she is a bit new to this game so this game was not really that exciting. However in the second game she was close donking my lone Shaymin with her Cyndaquil.
2-0

Round 3, Mew/Vanilluxe/Vileplume/Kingdra(downpaired)
Game 1
He got a pretty slow start but got up a Vileplume but I had Darkrai up and started to snipe his Vileplume down. I think he killed one of my Darkrais but I just koed his Mews and when I finally sniped Vileplume down it was gg.
Game 2
This game was a bit closer. I choose to not trying to snipe Vileplume this game and started to snipe Mews instead. I took a couple of fast prizes and then he locked my Darkrai. I think I had the 1-6 lead when this happened. He managed to KO my Darkrai and lock another one in the Paralysis lock. He managed to KO this Darkrai too with Kingdra but when I then sent up a fresh Shaymin he couldn’t kill it with Spray Splash so the only thing he could do was retreat for Kingdra and KO my Shaymin and hope I couldn’t ko his Kingdra. However, I dropped another Shaymin and moved all my energies to Mewtwo and X-Ball for game.
3-0

Round 4, Henning G, Zekrom/Eelektrik
Game 1
To be honest I don’t remember a lot from these games. He started Zekrom both games and we both got a slow setup. I remember he dropped a big Mewtwo down to KO my Darkrai but got really surprised when I dropped Mewtwo+DCE and that was enough for me to win this game.
Game 2
This game was probably the best game of the day. I don’t remember all details of this either but we both get slow starts again and we get down to 2-1 in prizes(me in the lead). I think I got the game secured when he drops a Mewtwo and gives it a lot of energy, retreat the Zekrom and X-Balling my Darkrai for KO. Atleast he thinks it’s a KO but I think he forgot the resistance. My Darkrai survives with 20 HP and I snipe down something for my last prize.
4-0

Round 5, Oliver B, CMT
Game 1
Same as above, don’t remember a lot from these. The thing I do remember is that I ko 2 Tornadus EX in one attack to take my first 4 prizes and advancing to a 2-6 lead which he can’t catch up.
Game 2
This was a bit closer with he putting down Eviolites on his EXs. I snipe down some Celebis and win this also.
5-0

I was the only 5-0 and it was 4 people who were 4-1. The top5 looked like this:
1. Hampus E, Darkrai/Mewtwo
2. Oliver B, Celebi/Mewtwo/Tornadus
3. Henning G, Zekrom/Eelektrik
4. Henrik R, Zekrom/Eelektrik
5. Joel H, Landorus/Terrakion
Sad for Joel he didn’t make it but I was happy I didn’t need to face a mono Fighting deck.

Semifinal, Henrik R, Zekrom/Eelektrik
Game 1
Very similar to the first game in round 4. He discard one Eelektrik turn one and when he is trying to setup two Eelektriks the turn after he realizes one Eeelektrik is prized. I KO the Eeelktrik and without Eels there’s really nothing he can do.
Game 2
I snipe down the Eelektriks as fast as I can and and my Max potions keeps healing my Darkrais. He drops a big Mewtwo and KO my Darkrai but I respond with Mewtwo+DCE and there’s nothing he can do to respond to that.
Henning beat Oliver in the other game so there’s me vs Henning in the final. (Link to the semifinal video will be put here.)

Final, Henning, Zekrom/Eelektrik
The final was recorded so I won’t write a lot about them.
Game 1(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EuDsoAbPc4w)
I start Smeargle to his lone Zekrom. Attach energy to Smeargle and use pont, then pass. He play pont, attach DCE and eviolite then hit me for 20. I play Juniper into enough stuff so I can get the turn 2 Night Spear. He draws, catcher my Shaymin and pass. I play switch for game. 1-0
Game 2(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTj-qH1ZTf4)
When the prize count is 5-6 in my favor I KO an Eelektrik and Tornadus EX in one attack and he can’t catch up.

My Battle Roads are larger than your Nationals 90% of the time. Grump grump grump.

So if you played in 10 battle roads only one of them had an attendance at 26 masters or fewer?

grump grump grump at assertion without supporting data ;)

This isn't far-fetched at all. 26 Masters is not an especially large BR in competitive areas.

Try and get actual data to support your own assertion that this isn't far-fetched. I expect you will be surprised.

26 isn't large if you ignore lots of attendances that were smaller than 26. But should you ignore all those smaller tournaments? [the answer is that you should not, as what you are doing by such exclusion is to cherry-pick the data}

Can you make that nine out of ten statement? Can anyone?

Well there are not 10 BRs a year here, but each BR has more than 26 masters. We have had BRs with almost 50 masters. Just saying 26 Masters seems small to me.

@Freze, How many battle roads? What were the attendances?

I'm not disputing that 26 seems small, I'm questioning the data behind that belief. IS 26 actually small? Or is 26 average?

Ok last Autumn we had BRs of (we did not have spring BRs this year):

1. 42 Masters.
2. 21 Masters.
3. 36 Masters.

Yeah only 3. :/ Though this is Finland so it may be a different situation in the US. I couldn't find info of previous BRs either. I suppose 26 is a sizeable BR, but not gigantic. My memory was pretty off with each having 30+ because of the small one. I also remembered we had like 5 or so, but that was wrong too unless I missed something.

I attended 10 autumn BRs. Here's links to all of them:

I attended 7 spring BRs. 6 have been updated so far. Here are links:

The last one has not been uploaded yet (the event was yesterday). IIRC the attendance was 29 players.

Here are the attendances.

29 (no source)

Maybe not 90%, but that wasn't too bad of an estimation.

@Diaz, based upon that data you would be able to make the 90% statement that Mune made for your Autumn battle roads. But not when the Spring battle roads were included.

median attendance 30 players lower quartile 28. Which means that 26 should not be a surprise.

I wonder if all of the USA is equally endowed with strong consistent attendances?

The fact that we can compare their National Championship to a Battle Road should be evidence enough. I recall playing in a battle road last fall that had 35-40 masters.

Anyways, congrats on your win! See you in Hawaii.

being able to recall an extreme does not make for a valid comparison. I'm sure that there will be areas of the USA that have poor attendance too.

It gets even worse when you consider if two tournaments both otherwise identical on attendance etc can be compared when one is in the NE of the USA and the other in say Hawaii.

26 players isn't a great attendance numerically but it may still be a success locally.

The fact you guys care so much about BR attendance in the US vs Nationals attendance in Europe is mind-boggling.

Congrats to hampuse1, and thanks for providing links to your finals match.

So if you played in 10 battle roads only one of them had an attendance at 26 masters or fewer?

grump grump grump at assertion without supporting data ;)

It appears as if someone doesn't understand what a figure of speech is. The English language can be so cruel sometimes... ;)

"...a phrase with a specialized meaning not based on the literal meaning of the words in it..."
