If he comes to my sales thread and says: "Would you trade something?" but neither of us has a trade thread, I see three options:

1) Ignore him (Which is rude)
2) Discuss making a trade thread here (Which is off topic)
3) Discuss making a trade thread via PM (Which is neither rude nor off topic)

I was trying to make the best decision based on the situation at hand.
I then threw him an offer in a trade thread based on what he had, he took it right away, and the deal was finalized in PM based on the offer made in a trade thread.

I don't see the problem.
 
The problem is context. Your post implies you are willing to trade on this thread, which is against the rules of this forum.
Your post implies that you're going willing to negotiate via PM, which is also against this forum's rules. (And unfortunately what appears to be a common practice)

Instead of ignoring, you could reply "I'm selling the box (since it's listed in this thread)" to keep within the rules and avoid the appearance of doing something inappropriate.

Or "PM me your trading topic link and i'll check out there what you have."

That is what I said in my original post.

That in no way implies anything you just suggested it did. That does not give the appearance of having done something inappropriate.
I appreciate your watchful eyes, but this is a non-issue.

But yeah. Back on topic.

What does lightly played mean as regards to near mint? (The cards I left out I already have but having played with in the past, probably aren't NM, but maybe I would want them too at a later date if your cards look much better than mine.)
 
Yeah, PM me to confirm on that deal.

None of those other cards, sorry.

Lightly played means you can expect some edgewear, scuffing, or scratching.
