Tips for Starting a League?

Hi friends!

I'm starting a league in a small town in Oklahoma, pretty much in the middle of 3 larger surrounding leagues in OKC or Tulsa area that are an hour or longer drive away. It's a college town, and also has a very good familial community.

I've started working on gaining my professorship (took the test today on a whim), and going to start working on getting a venue.

Do y'all have any tips or pointers on how to get this thing off the ground? I fully believe it'll be a great opportunity for the people in the area, I'm just not sure about the "tricks of the trade" and so forth.

Thanks for y'all's help!

Well obviously you need somewhere to have it.
Say for example a local comic/game store.

Then you would want to advertise it somehow.
Be it a sign in said location, or flyers you hand out.

So you also need to choose a good time/day to hold it.
Obviously the weekends are best for this.

Then you might want a league trade box of some sort.
Usually a bunch of commons/uncommons/energy to basically give away.

I hadn't thought of the trade box! That's a very good point. I'm probably going to OKC's PR here in a couple of weeks, so I'll be able to get my hands on some new cards. Thanks for that!

Look for some free opportunities to promote your league as well - try a community newspaper or blog, a Facebook page, fliers at the grocery story, college dining hall, libraries, etc. If you have a small group of folks who are interested, go ahead and start meeting (even before you get your league approved if necessary) then you'll have a great foundation for going forward.
