Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

(Un)Official 2010 Worlds Championships Updates

This isn't surprising. Huy was DQ'd from the Seattle regional last May for the same reason.

How embarassing for TPCi to be booking flights and paying for hotels rooms so cheaters can participate in their events.

Thomas was DQ'd from the San Francisco regional for re-entering the tournament after he had already been eliminated.

I know that the VGCs are in their infancy, but they're also at a crossroads. Honest players need TPCi to step up with a stronger anti-cheating policy.

How do you re-enter an event after it has already started?

Huy Ha, Thomas Mifflin, and Rees H. all failed the VGC hack check.
Thomas and Kinneas got DQ'd - for having illegal stats
Huy Ha had an illegal Cresselia, but was able to replace it, and got a Warning.

No, this is 2/3 incorrect, don't start going off before you know the facts.

Rees H. =/= Kinneas. Seriously. >_> Get your people/names straight.

Yup, Huy is pretty awesome for being able to use a hacked Cresselia disguised as one of the following Pokemon on his team. I never would have known that he used one if you hadn't pointed that out!

The Team:

Groudon ** Huy
@ Iron Ball/Lum Berry
Brave, 0 Speed, [252HP/252Atk/6Def]
~Earthquake
~Rock Slide
~Swords Dance
~Protect

A pretty sweet Iron Ball lead that ensures Jumpluff gets the sun off. It is pretty simple. Be slow, set up Swords Dance, **** things while their Pokemon try to take out Jumpluff.

Jumpluff ** Andrea <3
@ Yache Berry/Focus Sash/Iron Ball
Jolly, [252HP/252Speed/6SpDef]
~Sleep Powder
~Protect
~Bounce
~Encore

Jumpluff’s role is to disable things so that Groudon can get a sweep going. Sleep Powder and Encore are obvious. Bounce is there to avoid Shadow Forces, Explosions, and for general fun (<3 Andrea). Jumpluff switches out after it has disabled a couple Pokemon so that Dialga can have some fun.

Dialga ** Fishsaurus
@ Life Orb / Sitrus Berry/ Lum Berry
Quiet, 0 Speed, [252HP/252SpAtk/6Def]
~Dragon Pulse
~Trick Room
~Flamethrower
~Protect

With such a slow Groudon, and the ability to disable a ton of Pokemon with Sleep Powder and Encore, Dialga can generally come in later and set up Trick Room with ease. Life Orb is used depending on whether or not I feel like I need to hit hard with Dialga or if I need it to stay alive.

Abomasnow ** Tucker
@ Life Orb/Sitrus Berry/ Focus Sash
Quiet, [252HP, 252SpAtk,6Spdef]
~Blizzard
~Hidden Power [FIRE]
~Protect
~Grass Knot

Abomasnow is generally seen as a lead with Mewtwo in order to fake an Abomatwo lead. It is a pretty standard Abomasnow. Item choice is depending on the opponent’s team. It fires stab Blizzards and Grass Knots into opposing teams for MASSIVE DAMAGE.

Mewtwo ** Lena
@ Iron Ball
Sassy, [252HP, 42Atk, 4SpAtk, 212Spdef]
~Trick Room
~Protect
~Selfdestruct
~Blizzard

These last two Pokemon are what I feel make my team very unique. I’ve been toying around with this Mewtwo for months and decided that I wanted to survived Water Spouts and Specs Dracos. No one expects Trick Room coming from this thing and with Iron Ball, it is slow enough to boom the turn after.

Parasect ** pearhead
@ Life Orb/ Focus Sash/ Sitrus Berry/ Yache Berry
Brave, [252HP/252Atk/6Spdef]
~Spore
~Protect
~X-Scissor
~Seed Bomb

Parasect was my MVP for Worlds 2010. With Spore under Trick Room, Parasect is deadly. It’s no slouch on the offensive end, either. Seed Bomb and X-Scissor has some very nice coverage and does massive damage to anything it hits for Super Effective. Slap a Life Orb on this baby and you’re looking at some pretty surprising damage. The best part of it is when people realize that they have no Parasect counters =)

Oh wait maybe you just inaccurately made that up and he was using all legit mons instead! ^_^

How do you re-enter an event after it has already started?

VGC has a VASTLY different structure from the TCG. It's basically a race to win 4 straight battles. Single elimination. There are four sections, color-coordinated. Each win moves you to the next section, while your final win gets you into the Winner's Lounge.

Registration usually lasts beyond the Tournament start, because it isn't actually a tournament. So Registration might be from 8-9:30, and they'll start the race at 9am to get ppl through quickly. If you enter early enough and lose quickly enough, there's time to get back into the line. Of course, you're only allowed through ONCE.

I have no problem with players going through multiple times as long as it's made CLEAR when the registration cutoff happens. This is how they run Japanese TCG tournaments, from what I've heard, and it seems to work pretty well over there.

As far as hack checks, I'm not allowed to talk about those, being on Staff for Nationals...

Rees is not Kinneas...
Huy never used Cressellia, ever... even in testing... ever.
Get the facts straight before posting such Pokerumors and trying to slander some people's good names in the VGC community.

Wasn't trying to slander - just misinformation. I apologize for the inaccuracy's.

It was explicitly stated as being against he rules, its a much bigger issue and worse thing to do than 511 evs or something else that doesn't even give you a competitive advantage.

The thing is, being a tournament with a cap, getting a second chance while (quite possibly) taking someone else's chance to play just isn't fair. At the Newark Regionals, there were a small amount of people who were turned down since so many people participated.

Agreed... for the most part. The rules also explicitly state that a person shall be DQ'd if they're caught with a pokemon that has been altered by an external device. I like that judges recognize what does and does not constitute a competitive advantage, and the fact that they show grace to those trainers who have crossed the line, like the example mentioned above. But in the end, I don't think we can pick and choose which rules to follow.

Agreed.

IMO, what's most egregious, is the willful intent by the cheater to engage in such behavior. Invoke 'the spirit of the game' or whatever, the bottom line is that the act goes undetected for so long during these events, that by the time a cheater is caught, said cheater has sent several people home... even worse, people are indeed turned away at the door while others are inside pulling the shenanigans.
