What Makes League Fun?

We want to breathe some new life into a longstanding and well established league as well as start a brand new league. Over the years we have had some fun events like a Deoxys vs. human challenge and a magnificent portrayal of Team Magma vs. Team Aqua complete with steaming volcanoes and costumes. Needless to say, these events were both a lot of work for the organizers but tremendously fun and motivating for the players.

We want to add in events to make the sometimes daunting task of learning the game exciting for newer players but still provide some challenges to our amazing crop of competitive players.

I thought we could ask this question globally and gather some suggestions that have worked well for your league. So here is the question:

In your experience, what have been the most fun events you have planned? What events are remembered most fondly by your the players?

I fondly remember when the five best leaguers dressed up as Elite Four members and Champion and held a tournament as passes in the videogames. This was accompanied with prizes for those who could best all five in a row. Not only were the prizes cool, but the costumes (I had crazy fun convincing people that I would not crossdress as Cynthia and stuck as Steven) were a great hit among the younger ones. Not to mention my left contact lense being purple and my right one green, but that's another story.
Free prizes were also given out through random draw.
The idea was that a card was given to each leaguer, and when they beat one of the 5 that person would receive a stamp. When they got all 5 they got a prize (can't remember what it was) and if they beat all five in order then thy received a bigger prize (one was a DVD).
I carried 3 decks so as to make it fairer on the younger fellows, and to make sure the older peeps didn't rake in all the prizes!
Of course, all came to an end and I had to give up my position to the "new champion" who had beaten me more than anyone else. This little pass over was a great hit as well. Everyone left happy.
I'm sure the concept can be adjusted to suit the number of leaguers you have. Of course you cannot possibly have each leaguer against an "Elite" all the time; we had some minigames like TFG while you waited in line.

Meld to your needs; I don't recommend the contacts thing unless you're willing to put up with the weird looks from 90% of the community. Seriously, the convenience store guy was scared.

Give it a shot I guess. Might find it fun.
Get some inflatables as well; great hit with the young fellas. Literally; they get used as punching bags after a while :/
