Where should you place a Trainer when you play it?

I'm still fairly new to the Pokemon TCG, having learned it from my grandson.

Up to now, when we've played a Trainer card, we've placed it beside the Active Pokemon and left it there while we carried out the instructions on the Trainer card. Then, after completing the instructions we would put the Trainer card onto the discard pile.

Well, this morning at Pokemon League, a player corrected me and told me that I was putting my Trainer in the wrong place. He said I should play the Trainer from my hand directly onto the discard pile. I expressed my surprise at this, because I'd never heard of that practice before, and the player next to me agreed with my opponent, that the proper place to play a Trainer is straight from your hand onto the discard pile.

    Were these guys right?

    No, they were wrong.
A lot of players make that shortcut, but it's surprising to have players "correct" someone to do the wrong thing.

You are correct. You play it to the field, then discard it when finished.
