The event: Oregon State tournament.
The time: Late
The problem: Blaziken
It was the night of the Oregon State Championship Tournament. My best friend, Death Lord 2000 just lost in the final. He was really upset, because not only did he lose, he lost to Blaziken.
The battle was a long one. The last of the main event, that started almost 9 hours earlier. I couldn't imagine what was going on in his head during that match.
The true story of one Pokemon TCG player's losses, and rebirth of his spirit.
The event: Washington state tournament
The time: the day before.
The problem: Blaziken again.
The night before the Washington State Tourny, I was panicking. I couldn't decide what to play, and if it would even make a difference. I was in a rut. It was either "make something crap" or "give up and not go".
Thinking through the current metagame, it popped into my head like a little poppy bubble thingy. Gardevior EX! My good buddy Death Lord had some. So I went out to gresham and borrowed 2 GardEXs and 3 delcattys from him, and constructed my deck when i got home. With a renewed sense of confidense, I went to sleep, ready and willing to face the challenge of the next morning.
**Day of the tournament**
My mom and I ran into the new Oregon State Champion for 2004 along the way to the tournament building. It was in an empty store in a mall.
We exchanged some words (plesantly) and he showed us to the tournament. Deck in hand, I followed them into the mall... and my 2nd tournament in Washington began...
I failed miserably. My gardevoir EX deck was missing it's back bone, Gardevoir. I couldn't track any down, and lost. It didnt help that the last deck I faced was a Dark deck. I may have made top 8 otherwise.
On the way home, I listened to my newly aquired CDs, and slept. The week after that was a long and strenuous one. I was truely considering quitting the game. Blaziken was too rampant in the format. And it was winning all the tournaments in the northwest (OR/WA). And I thought "If i'm just going to get beat by blaze... why bother playing anymore"
It didn't make sense for me to continue the game, to me atleast.... Untill I discovered the card that might lead me to victory over the deck!
