Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Worlds 2012 Hawaii

Living in Hawaii, I can totally understand people's concerns over the impact another worlds in Hawaii can have on their wallets. However, and I've stated this before, there are a few things that people should consider:

1) Worlds in general is meant to be an exclusive event. To my recollection, Pokemon is the ONLY game that has an LCQ for Worlds. I'm not saying that that's a bad thing, but I think a smaller event is better for TPCi since they have to pay for a smaller staff and have fewer volunteers. I'm not sure, but I think this year they were in pretty urgent need of volunteers too. Its kind of funny too because 2010 was bigger than 2007 in attendance and venue.

2) I actually offered to connect with people I know in Hilo (on the same island) to do possible Costco runs and such if people wanted simple items. I knew and many others here knew from 2007 that the resort isn't cheap nor are the places in/around the resort. The only exception I can think of is Subway with their $5 footlong! I was surprised by that because most Subways in Hawaii have $6 - $7 footlongs lol...

3) Do research on the location ahead of time. Find out where the eating places, transportation, etc are. I posted about the shuttle service to/from the Hilton in one of the transportation threads. The shuttles could carry up to ~10 people and the price was ~$50 for 1 to 5ish people and ~$10 more per person after that. People again didn't take advantage of it as I could've gotten a "local" discount and only had 2 other people with me.

A trip OUT of Hawaii isn't cheap for me, and I plan to attend Nationals and possibly Worlds each year. Those are the only two real events I can participate in as I organize and run all local events. I'm thankful that worlds was in Hawaii this year, though I still had to dish out ~$500 to ~$700 on items/transportation/hotel. Consider yourselves lucky to be able to attend various events across the country with general ease.

But yeah, when it comes to the World Championships for anything, I don't expect low cost and convenience. It pays to know a few locals, and to be prepared! Hope to see all of you in SD 2011!
