This information comes from the Japanese magazine, Otona Fami...

- Domestic sales for the franchise are at 1 trillion yen
- Worldwide sales for the franchise are at 2 trillion yen
- "monetary effect" of ANA's Pokemon jet and JR's Pokemon stamp rally are at 2 billion yen and 4 billion yen respectively
- total game copies for Pokemon franchise stand at 190,000,000 units
- Pokemon franchise RPG sales stand at 130,000,000 units
- The Pokemon cartoon series is now shown in 74 countries
- domestically, 85 companies make officially licensed Pokemon products.
- 3,500 items are available
- the Pokemon card game is available in 40 countries
- over 14 billion cards have been sold
- the 12 Pokemon movies have made a total of 55.8 billion yen in Japan
- Mewtwo Strikes Back is the most popular movie, making 7.24 billion yen
- The Power of One is the second most popular movie, making 6.2 billion yen, and was also the number one Japanese release for 1999.

Is that a billion = 1,000,000,000 or the 10^12 billion used outside the USA?

It is not clear if worldwide sales exclude Japan. If they don't then Japan = rest of the world at a trillion yen each.

1 yen = approx 1cent though conversion to other currencies implies sales figures and so should not be done. This error may be present in the worldwide figure.

Anyone wanna work out the cost of 16 billion cards to the enviroment?

Simmer down, buddy - I think half a dozen unleashed gas hydrates will do more damage to the o-zone layer than those 16 billion cards combined.

Hate to sound like a n00b here, but what's the difference between all of these sales figures?

I'm no expert either, but I believe the first is plain old overall sales, like it says. The second is sales in your Targets and Wal-Marts and the like. The last is sales in Hobby/Specialty shops.

Hobby channel penetration could be improved it seems.

I'll say!

One of the stores in a mall where I run events sells more Pokemon than any other TCG.
He promotes it.

I suspect a lot of hobby channel stores are stuck in a self-fulfilling prophecy mode.

"Pokemon doesn't sell. Don't order any"

Yes these numbers are why NTDOY has a Y/Y growth. Too bad other parts of Ninendo's frachises are not doing as hot or Nintendo would be the best performing entertainment company in the world.

The Nintendo Wii has outsold both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 worldwide, and is about 5 million units away from outselling them both combined.

What is NTDOY?

Hmm well true (although systems are least profitable part of the gaming industry), but they are far from being the most profitable entertainment company. Disney easily takes that role as they are much more diversified in movies, television and gaming. They are also have better bottom line franchises. Nintendo is easily the most profitable GAMING co. in the world, but not overall entertainment.

NTODY is Nintendo's stock listing on the NYSE.

All of those figures published via earnings reports and can be extrapolated much easier in dollar figures (which is what us American investors receive).
