Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

worst and funniest calls you heard at nationals

Side note, NOBODY listens to the announcements.

Every year, they say to hold the slip in the air and WAIT for a RUNNER.

As it was said before, judges judge, not verify games (unless they are sitting on a game due to time, however, the runner takes up the slip quickly)

About the decklist issue;

One thing I never did quite understand about tourneys abroad is that they don't seem to do pre-tourney deckchecks. This would weed out anyone with a less-then-full list and give them some time to correct the issue. Now I do understand the whole time/sheer number of folks issue, but if you put all the judges together AND the runners to do these quick checks, it should be possible right? Especially since, if my understanding is correct, the first day were only 7 rounds...there SHOULD be enough time. Just ask people to show up a bit earlier and stretch the deadline for the last round by a bit and you should be set.

Just my 2 cents. Its how it goes in Holland.

You know waiting a couple of min to get your slip signed isnt the end of the world lol. Probably the reason you had to wait was because of the dozen more people raising there hand that just finished a game. Also the first day both master pods was low on runners so we did our best to get to everybody in a decent amount of time. And like duke said they made it clear to call for a runner,so I dont know why I caught about a hundred players asking a judge to sign there slip when im almost right next to them ready with a pen lol.

Also scipio would you want to sit with a dozen judges and runners for maybe 3 more hours of the 1st day checking 900+ lists lol probably not knowing that day 1 probably would've ended really late at night. That means more waiting on the players and making the first part of the day really stressfull on the staff so its easier to just quickly check and do random deck checks throughout the event instead of the begining..

You do know that "slow play" has absolutely nothing to do with prize count, right?? It simply means that a player is consistently exceeding the rec time guidelines. Similarly, it isn't relevant if the other player disagrees or not.. players exceeding the guidelines with a consistent pattern are subject to this warning. Once intent rears its head, then we are looking at stalling, which is an entirely different kettle of fish...

Out of curiosity how early does stalling typically get called? It can't be called turn two into the game can it? Not that it's ever happened to me - I got stalled out once and lost Regionals because of it already, but because I'm a slow comprehender in a new metagame. I figured I'd ask.

I don't know if this goes along with the thread, but it struck me as funny:
There was a match that went to 30 + 3 and the turns were up, and both players were stalled at either 1 or 2 prizes each, so the judge told them that it was sudden death. The one player completely picks up his deck and begins to set up for another match. His opponent, who I personally know, and the judge's eyes got really wide. The judge ruled that it was a game loss, but this player kept insisting that this was what sudden death was and his local professor explained it to him like that. The head judge was called over and explained to him why this happened. I am pretty sure this player dropped afterward. His opponent had it, but still! I think his local professor explained Sudden Death in Top Cut when each player is tied at 1-1 and there is no time left in the match. It was kinda sad actually, the judges were just shocked...

It can be called turn 2, but it is rare. Usually, the 1st search of the deck occurs turn 1 or 2. That search is usually a bit longer than normal bc players are "inventorying" their deck to see what is prized. After that, the searches need to be timely and reasonable.

You may still get a warning, but I wouldn't make you replace the cards, especially if you filled in the set and card number. But please don't turn this into "What's the minimum I have to do to avoid a penalty?" Do it right, and we will both be happy.

The worst call I had at nats :/

I missed a round and was more then 5 minutes late. I talked to one of the masters judges and he told me I was still in for next round and that I didn't need to do anything to stay in. My friend missed the round to. We were both 3-1 at the time, and the loss put us at 3-2. We go up there next round and our names weren't on the roster. We went and talked to pop, and he explained that they called out our names 3-4 times and we didn't show up at the the booth so they droped us. We didn't leave the room after we talked to the first judge, and they never did call out our names. Pop said We could maybe get back in but we would have gotten another game loss, putting us at 3-3 with teribad resistance so we just stayed out.
