View Full Version : Will There Be a 5th Generation?

Do you think they will make a 5th generation of pokemon? If you do, do you think it'll be good? Discuss!

I'd be surprised if there *wasn't* a 5th generation.
Worldwide, Platinum has Quintuple Platinum sales (5 million plus).
Diamond and Pearl are approaching Double Diamond in total (about 17 million).
There has never been a main series Pokemon game to sell less than 5 million. In fact, Platinum is currently the low man on the Pokemon totem pole, followed by Emerald, Crystal, FRLG, Yellow, RS, DP, GS, and RBG in that order.
Nintendo would not allow such a profitable franchise to just go to waste. They're too smart for that.

Very true. The game is still going very strong. Another subject of discussion; some think as we go along the pokemon get less and less like the original. Do you think the 5th gen pokemon would even really fit?

Bullados, you have an interesting point with the sales exceeding 5 million for all of the Pokemon series. How do those numbers compare to some of the other staples in the Nintendo lineup, such as Zelda or Mario?
bullados
07/26/2009, 10:51 AM
No Zelda game has ever gone Diamond. The highest selling Zelda game ever was Ocarina of Time with under 8 million.
For Mario, I'm going to ignore all of the spinoffs and stuff like that and focus only on the main games that contain "Super Mario" in the title. I'm also ignoring all of the downloadable rehash games, as there's no real way to track those, as well as the remakes on the GBA and DS. The lowest selling Mario game ever was SMW2: Yoshi's Island for the SNES. This sold low because it came out at the end of the SNES's life cycle. Every other SMB game has exceeded 5 million sales. The original SMB and SMW both went double-Platinum (20 million), but those can't really be counted as they were packaged with the system. NSMB for the DS has over 19 million sales, and there are 7 different main games across 5 different platforms that have 10 million plus sales, not including the repackaged Super Mario Allstars for the SNES which contained every NES SMB game, including the Lost Levels, and also sold over 10 million. (As a side note, SMRPG only sold about 2 million, which is surprising because IMO it's the best of the lot).

Yoshi's Island is actually my favorite mario game! It's in my top 3 for favorite console games. It was so much fun as a kid, there was a HUGE amount of replay value (with any Mario game of course). I really want to play it now =X

Yes and Yes, there has to be a fifth generation and it will be awesome like the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Pokemon won't stop and it's one of the things that make it good.

If there was a 5th gen they would certainly try something far fetched again. I remember 3rd gen came out and it was like "pokemon that control the weather." I thought that was kinda cool, but when the 4th gen came out with "Pokemon that created the world, emotions, and control time and space" I thought that was kind of overdoing it. I hope in the 5th gen they'll go back to basics like in the 1st and 2nd generations. We don't need 10+ legendaries in the next generation like we got when DP were introduced.
One thing I'd like to see is a Hybrid Pokemon. Unlike Mewtwo which was a clone of Mew. I mean like a Pokemon that was created from human genes. That'd be something awesome. Plus more dual type combos like Dark-Psychic, Fire-Water, or maybe even Dark-Steel. I dare Gamefreak to use those combos when creating new pokemonl.

I mean after 3rd generation I thought that there was nothing left for them to do but they figured it out and I bet they will figure it out again

I agree that there are plenty of combinations that have been neglected. Fire/Dragon is one of the more obvious ones.

I'd like to see pure flying legendaries.
DukeFireBird
07/26/2009, 05:20 PM
Unfortunatelly, pure flying types will not work, because of Roost. Roost removes the flying subtype of the Pokemon that uses it, thats why after a roost, a bird can get hit with EQ.
5th gen would be awesome imo, but go back to basics, only like 5 legends, and create a good storyline.

I want to see Team Rocket Return as the bad guy....they wanted to TAKE OVER THE WORLD...
Team Magma and Aqua wanted to reshape is for mor water? More land? "for the betterment of human kind" I beleive both Archie and Maxie (whatever his name is) said.
Team Galactic was defiently evil....Cyrus was on the edge of insanity in Platium...Actually a rivarly between Galactic and Rocket would be cool.

Well i'm sure that there will be a 5th gen because they have 3 pokemon shaped key chains with a shadow of a unknowen pokemon on them and they were a limited sale I beleave but there were three of them. So when they come out I don't know but I thank that there doing the same thing like they have done with togapi and munchlax.

If only. Describe a "good storyline" please. Like Final-fantasy type story? I doubt a storyline in a main-stream pokemon game will be anything more than what we've seen before.
Few legends would be nice. I'd also like to see more userfriendly IV/EV mechanics. I.e. showing hints on current EVs and a bigger hint on ALL IVs.
As for the 5th gen pokemon. We need a camel and a llama. That's all I need to be happy :thumb:

we already have a camel pokemon (nuMEL, CAMerupt...), and i would like it to be like the GSC games w/ a ton of pokemon, two regions, but more storyline.

^^Oh I get it! I never thought of that... I'd love to see something like Team Galactic Vs Team Rocket. This would make it easy for them to include 4th and 1st generation maps, and what-not. They could be battling for control of the 5th gen region

Well- here's how it has always been, every 2 years ago, they release 3 new pokemon,or something like that, but with the release of platinum there wasn't any new pokemon, just new forms. If there isn't any new pokemon in the 13th pokemon movie we are probably going to have to wait a while for new pokemon.

I would like to see some new type combos like Fire/Ghost, Electric/Dragon. As far as new starters go, they should have a Grass pokemon thats a Koala Bear as a grass pokemon, a Dolphin pokmon a water type, and a Tiger Pokemon for a fire type.

So, 5th Generation eevee ... what would they do? Ground, Rock, Metal, & Poison seem doable. Fighting, Flying, Ghost, and Dragon seem less so.
In any event I fully expect a 5th generation.

And that's the only reason why pure Flying types can't ever exist??? Sorry, that's just silly that because of a FOURTH gen move, pure Flying types can't exist other then Arceus.
@Vanderbilt: Why wouldn't a Ghost or Flying Eeveelution be possible? It's more possible and easier then Fighting and Dragon IMHO.

Grass/Dragon type. It can be done, as it still fulfills the 4X Ice weakness and it would be a way to make the Grass typing a little bit more useful.
Also, wolf pokemon. Mightyena doesn't count. It has Hyena in its name for a reason. :P
As for Eevee's, Ghost and Metal would be my call, though a flying one isn't a bad idea either.

In 3rd Generation there were NO new eevee evolutions
1st: Flareon Vaporeon Jolteon
2nd: Umbreon Espeon
4th: Leafeon Glaceon
There may not be any in the 5th.,

(I love how in the eevee discussion it's basically assumed that 5th generation is inevitable)
After some thought I want a Rock eevee. Really there are just a HANDFULL of pure Rock types. Regirock, Sudowoodo and Rampardos are mostly it.

please explain. how was ZOT not Platinum, selling over 7 million copies
besides:
To date, worldwide sales of The Legend of Zelda series have surpassed 36 million software units.
http://n-europe.com/news.php?nid=3858
and that's based off figures current in March of 2003. with only 11 titles having been released (plus Wind Waker only in Japan at that time) that is an average of 3 million sales of each, or triple platinum average. still doesn't touch the pokemon game sales, but quite impressive none the less and very much Platinum sales figures, contrary to what you claimed. Then again Zelda is $40 to $60 on release while pokemon is only $20 (someone always has it for this even though the MSRP is $30)

A dragon Eevee would easily be my favorite of the Eeveelutions. Steel and Fighting or Rock Eevee would also cover all the types in the TCG. I only wonder how Eevee would evolve into them. I guess level up on locatio, or level up with a specific held item.
As for the new 5th gen, I wonder what kind of region we'll get this time and which types the 8 gyms will cover. Gamefreak has yet to give us a Gym that specializes in :dark: types. I was hoping we'd get a Dark gym in DP but nope, they had to reuse Rock, Electric, and Water again and again. C'mon, I wanna see a Dark Type Gym!

Surprisingly, no FF game has ever gone Diamond either. Though 7 was the closest (with less than 500k away). This makes me doubt my source just slightly.....
Actually, Game Informer made a list a while ago of the top selling video game franchises , and I'm not sure on all of them, but I'm pretty sure the top 3 were Mario, Pokemon, and another Nintendo franchise, in that order.

no- that's right. i was talking total revnue, not total sales. they sold right at 9.9 million copies (of the best game ever created!)
I don't see the Pokemon franchise dying out anytime soon. It is just too poupular, and bringing in a lot of profits for Nintendo. That's my opinion of course.

The reason the Eeveelutions were skipped in third generation was probably because they knew they needed to conserve types. There are already 7 of the available 17 types covered; they can't go on forever. What would happen after every type of Eevee was created? So as far as I am concerned, I doubt there will be Eeveelutions in the fifth generation.

That's a silly argument. At two Eeveelutions per generation, we still have enough types for 5 more generations. :\ Never mind that there's always the chance that new types will be added. After all, we still don't have the Light/Holy type even though we have the Dark/Evil type.

I'm pretty sure this thread is about the 5th generation not the past ones.... Anyway i think a fun addition to the games would be making it so you do contests. It's not confirmed that the Ghost Type evolution of Eevee will have that name, its still a rumor right now as we speak. How was 4th Gen a letdown? 1st, 2nd, and 3rd were some of the best and the Sinnoh region Pokemon of the 4th Gen aren't that bad actually.

I hate to admit it but he's got a good point, Nintendo probably needs a new kind of formula to keep the franchise fresh instead of just adding on new Pokemon after Arceus and HeartGold/SoulSilver seems to be the sort of thing to keep the franchise in check.

You know what I'd like? The 5th gen would be something like the anime. On the Wii. I think this has a lot of potential, and it could span across 5 regions, Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and whatever the 5th Gen region is. Cities should be in scale, like it wouldn't take me 5 seconds to run through Hearthome, which is a big city. Battles would be in the classic style, but with complex animations. Like if Infernape uses Close Combat, it'd show him jumping at the enemy and beating the snot out of it. Something like the free roaming of Fallout or GTA would be great. It'd make an excellent Wii game.

I would like the 5th generation to be in the same general style as previous ones, albeit with major tweaks. For instance, not having to train for a couple of hours just to be able to beat one gym would be nice and I would like to see 3d models instead of the boring 2d sprites. I also like the "2 areas, 16 badges" aspect of GSC, though GSC were the worst games in my opinion.

If there is a fifth generation we might have to wait for a new gameboy, Because if you notice (almost) every generation of pokemon has come out for a new acronymed gameboys. Okay that was to complicated, let's just say half of the Pokemon Generations have come out for new GameBoys. Now I think it would be interesting to see what new Pokemon, new Pokedex, storie line (so long as is involves a deivous team and amazing legendaries), awesome new gyms and elit four, new features, new Pokemon and character poses, oh I could go on and on. So finally I'll say it would be cool to see the new names, after all since Pokemon went to GameBoy Advanced (excluding G,S,C), Pokemon game names have been named after valuable materials.

The only thing I know is that WHEN 5th generation comes little Dunsparce better evolve into something amazing like Togetic did. I'm very excited about Heart Gold and Soul Silver, Gold and Silver were the best games but the big problem was that they epic sacrificed alot to add in Kanto; I've still got my guide book and every Pokemon only learns like 8 or 9 moves and they're all terrible. I think that 5th generation is either going to be amazing or it's going to be a massive splash attack, there's a lot riding on it; personally I've loved ever single generation and I'd love to see the trend continue.
