View Full Version : Unreleased figures or fakes

Are these unlreleased figures, or fakes? I can't see anyone taking the trouble to make them, bases and all, as fakes.
http://pokegym.net/gallery/showimage.php?i=49613&c=15&orderby=dateline&direction=DESC&cutoffdate=-1
However, I'm thinking these are not on the announce Groundbreakers list either. What is up with this?

Here's a picture on the go-Pokemon site from the GAMA show:
http://go-pokemon.com/tcg/common/img/articles/big/gama1.jpg
It shows one of these figures among the "upcoming set 3" figures, the Snorlax.
The article is no longer accessible, but the picture is.

To add to moms comment I think the pkmncollectors community has seen/bought at least 2-3 sets of these.
People were unsure at first because of the Snorlax at first.
I'll ask around the community for any more info.
Edit: Just asked in the community chat room and everyone has said the ones they have look and feel 100% legit and have no errors at all, however they all seem to think they are bootlegs.
PokePop
01/01/2010, 12:46 PM
Oh what basis, though?
It seems to me that if at least a test run was made, and then Pokemon dropped the TFG, those test run figures might find their way onto the market.
If someone was making bootlegs, wouldn't it make more sense for them to make copies of existing ones?
After all, it actually takes some fair amount of work to design these things from scratch.
DJGigabyte
01/01/2010, 01:39 PM
I'm not exactly sure on what basis.
I've seen alot of photos of them and if they are bootlegs they are some of the best I've ever seen of anything.
I would possibly have said they were test ones (the only weird part being that quite a few sets have hit the market) but I haven't seen them in person so I just asked some people who own them.
I'll post here if I get anymore info from people.

A product which has been made by someone who isn't affiliated with Pokemon (or any officiail Pokemon related company) in any way.

if you notice the GAMA show snorlax has a black base and the other one has a white base.
I don't know if that means if it is fake or not, but since snorlax is the only pokemon to be shown in both pictures that is the only thing I can get off of it.
Fake figurines/ pokemon items in general are poorly made and the pokemon look defected, in this case the actual figure looks the same.
See what type of packaging you get and that should be a sign if it is fake or not.

DJGigabyte

Just asked around the comm and the general price people seemed to be getting them for were around $20 for the set of 8.
The cheap price may have contributed to people thinking that they were bootleg since you would imagine official unreleased figures costing alot more.
Each one has a collection number of XX/42 on the base so at least they are consistant with each other for that.
PokePop
01/03/2010, 05:47 AM
I'll look them over when I receive them and see what I think.
It doesn't sound like their reasons for calling them bootleg are good.
Does anyone have an estimate for how many are being sold, at this point?

Watch out, BDS will be at your house looking for the Snorlax figure.
Volmise
01/03/2010, 09:35 PM
They are unfortunately, fakes. Chinese bootleggers/reject sellers stole the molds from the factory (at least, that's the general thing going around Pkmncollectors) and are making them then selling them in bundles on eBay. While they do seem to be made well, the painting is off in areas, and the the molds themselves are not consistent - the face shapes of two Pikachu figures a friend of mine bought from the seller are completely different.
It's a shame though, since I love the TFG and would have loved to see an official release of these.
PokePop
01/04/2010, 04:43 AM
On what basis, though, has it been determined that bootleggers stole the molds?
What is "going around" is not sufficient.
At least a claim to have spoken to someone in a position to know.
This seems more like speculation.
DJGigabyte
01/04/2010, 06:10 AM
Anyone got any contacts with anyone involved in the design how may be able to confirm/deny that the figures other than Snorlax were planned for release and went far enough in the design to have either molds or prototypes made?
Sounds like we won't be able to get an official answer without contacting someone like that.

From informed opinions, these figures appear to be made from legitimate parts.
One may notice that one of the stickers is rotated off of the way it should have been applied, but other than that, an educated opinion would be that these are from a test or sample run.

I gotta throw this out there, the figures from the TFG were Gashapon in Japan. The spinning bases are new, but the figures glued on top of them were molded for a gashapon game in Japan. I have a Bulbasaur, but saw a half dozen or so others that were released as TFGs. I doubt these are fakes, but it's possible they are prototypes with those alredy produced figs glued onto test bases.
PokePop

The figures are not randomly put onto bases with random attack stickers.
The right figures are with the right stickers and on the bottom of the base, the set and promo info is all correct.
This is the right stuff, not pieces slopped together randomly from parts scavenged.

You're half right. The company producing the TFG molds was Kaiyodo, who are known for doing high quality Pokemon PVCs. The most common way in Japan to acquire one of these PVCs is from a bottletop. because in Japan they actually reward customers for buying things like soft drinks. They don't re-use molds actually, while they have some figures that were repeats for them. If they had done a Pokemon before, they'll sometimes to do something similiar but different. On a random note, does anyone know if the game ever launched in Japan? Because honestly, I could see THAT being the real death of the Trading Figure Game.

just clarifying the PKMNcollector's position on bootlegs! the sellers who have these sets are from hong kong, which while every HK seller doesn't produce fake merch only, a large majority pump out very awful bootleg figures ( http://community.livejournal.com/hells_pokemart/ ). it's just best to be wary buying from china, sadly :( but sometimes it turns out great, like...
with these figures! so far our community's bought a few of every set, and whereas HK sellers are famous for sending you something completely different from the photo, these have apparently been great. on top of that, the attacks/etc on the bases are legitimate.
so are they bootlegs, or stock that began getting produced before receiving the axe? honestly we don't know. for now we're calling them "unofficial" just since they never got an official release. some members think they are bootlegs and others think they are 100% the real deal. but some definitely ARE a bit off... paintjobs aren't AS nice... while others look 100% legit. so who can be sure? unless a POP official told us.
anyway, here's some pics from the set i have coming in soon...

Hi everyone! I am new here :) I have bought a set of those, and I have to say that they are stunning :)
One thing I noticed is that they are exact copies of the original.
1)They have the correct numerical order, that they would have if the set ever got released.
2)The Manaphy Darkrai and new Pikachu figure also has the correct black star promo number( 06, 07, 08) With 04 Being Dialga and 05 Palkia, the two promo of Groundbreakers.
3)They introduce two new special condition just like in every set, though I am not certain which two. ( the first set had Paralyzed and Poisoned, Second set had Asleep and either Burned, Confused or Frozen, and the remaining two are new to this third "unofficial" set.
4)The sculptors written on the bottom sticker of the figure are the ones that made the first set(though they could have just copied the info) but the figures really look like their style.
5)All the figures shown in the promo picture of set 3
I liked this game a lot, especially since Nintendo took the TCG away from Wizard all these years back. I cannot afford the rotation of the game, and really like participating in tournaments... and I really like pokemon, so I got fond of this game really quick, and I have done some digging about it as you can see

Just made another discovery. Minun is number 24. I read Plusle's ability and it says "Plusle's attacks do 30 more damage for each Minun next to Plusle."
EDIT2:
Number 23 I mean. :P

Suicune is so delicate :( It arrives broken :( The paintwork on this Suicune isn't well aligned either the white diamonds are off by at least a milimeter. It still looks very good but I've yet to succeed with repairing broken figures. (Meowths all seem to have broken legs )
I read somewhere (I think pkmncollectors) that meowth had two slightly different versions released, the first version with the very easily breakable leg (worth more now due to smaller run and the fact that people kept breaking them) and a seocnd version which changed the pose slightly and made the legs less likely to snap off.
I've only read, not seen, so if anyone can confirm that would be great.

Not sure if anyone is still arguing the point, but...
From what I know of miniature games, I'm fairly certain that you wouldn't be able to produce fakes at such a quality/quantity, or even very cheaply. I'm no expert, but I'd bet this was a test print or something.

Judging by the numbers of these still found on ebay, I think it was a bit more than a test print. The supplies of some figures do seem to be running dry however. I've looked high and low for Erika (the only one I really want for collectable value, unless there's a Bulbasaur or Gardevoir found out there somewhere too), and I haven't seen her available on any of the auctions since I found out she existed (other than someone on the LJ who wanted to sell her alone for $20 US).
It really is a shame that these games were never really supported. It'd be amazing to see the fan community step in like players of the Star Wars and Star Trek CCG's did, but I guess the games never got popular enough to get the grassroots action going there.

It would have to be a promo, I saw a picture of one on another site. It has the same sculpt as the chess pieces like this (http://cgi.ebay.com/Kaiyodo-Tomy-Pokemon-281-Kirlia-Figure-Chess-Part-2-NEW-/170492203854?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27b220934e).
Either that or someone took the figure off the chess piece and glued it to a spinner base.

It might not necessarily be a promo. If it's the same sculpt as the chess piece, I'm inclined to think more that they just used the same sculpt over. When did the chess pieces come out? It's possible many of them were just the moulds from the unreleased TFG set, which were repurposed.

I think that the Kirlia chess figure and the Kirlia TFG he saw was of the same sculpt. I've seen chess figures in ebay that used figures from the TFG like Tauros and Charmander and even figures from Kaiyodo bottlecaps like Swellow and Mew. I even saw trainer figures in the chess pieces. I guess it's just the opposite case here where the chess figures are mounted on a TFG base.

It could only have been a promo or a fake as it isn't part of Next Quest, Groundbreakers, or the unnamed set.

I don't suppose they had a picture of the base? It'd be pretty obvious if it was a promo.
Also...how is it that this game never took off when Penny Arcade did a comic on it?

I actually just got the figures without bases so I had to remove the bases from my extra figures to give them bases. The quality of the figures matches the ones in the 1st and 3rd set.

If you got them without bases, then they're not figures for the trading figure game, they're just regular figures.

Just looking at our TFG section in the Gallery. :frown: I got rid of the 'members category' setting on the main category.
http://pokegym.net/gallery/browseimages.php?c=145
Any interest here in uploading pix if we create a section for this set (Groundbreakers?)?
What is the name of the released and unreleased sets after nextquest?
Anyone want to suggest a suggested standard format for the photos?

What is the name of the released and unreleased sets after nextquest?
Anyone want to suggest a suggested standard format for the photos?
After Next Quest there is Groundbreakers which is almost impossible to find any figures from. We don't know the name of the 3rd, unreleased, set. I spoke with Mr. Liesik the other day and he let me know it was confidential and that he unfortunately couldn't divulge the name.
I would be more than happy to upload pictures of the sets. Next Quest is complete. Grounbbreakers we only have the 8 figures which came with the starter sets- Latios, Latias, Hariyama, Green, Geodude, Mightyena, Raticat, and Landon. From the third set, we have 37 of the 42 figures- missing Plusle, Minun, Whismur, #30, and #37. We're also missing 3 promos- Dialga, Palkia, and ref. With Darkrai we have one with the standard pose and another that I think is an example of a test figure as the pose is completely different.
As to format for the pictures, what would work for the gym? Would the standards from either Event or Fan Art work? Photos of this size would probably be best so viewers can see the meticulous attention to detail paid in the sculpting process. As far as substance, the photos should have a solid, neutral background with nothing in the photo aside from the single figure. They should also be cropped tight so there isn't a lot of dead space.
I know this thread is about the 3rd unreleased set of TFG but I recently got hold of these:

Those are prototypes from Groundbreakers, hence no stickers. They look like the ones which were slated for the set and are probably legit.

A little new information- the product itself appears to be real, however I now believe they weren't assembled in the factory. I've received 2 different Mew figures and one of them was broken. With careful disassembly (so I could repair the broken one) I found that neither were mounted properly.
There is a hole in the crystal that Mew is hugging where the left foot is supposed to be mounted. Being mounted properly makes it so that the piece is balanced for spinning and so that it looks like Mew if floating between the crystals. It also makes the piece more fragile than any before it and is likely why the bootleggers glued it to the crystal- so it wouldn't be broken.
Just thought I would share this because it is the first real evidence of these not being "official product" even if they do seem to be made with official parts.

Anyone have any extra Tading Fidure game trainre cards, thoes are the only ones I am interested in. I have a few but would like to collect them all. I am willing to trade real trading card game cards for them.
Plus does anyone have a complete list of all of the trainer cards that were availale in theese sets?
Thanks

The cards for Groundbreakers weren't seen as they didn't come in the starter sets. The third set never came to the stores, so none there either. I have extras of most of the cards and I'll post them in my trade thread so you can check them out. Here's a list of the Trainers that came in Next Quest:
1 Full Heal
2 Long Throw
3 Max Revivie
4 Scoop Up
5 Swap Spots
6 Switch
7 X Accuracy
8 X Attack

Yep. That's what I was trying to do. I really don't want to see this closed as it's the only place that I may be able to find info on where some of these figures pop up at and also the only place to possibly find out what the last 2 figures from the 3rd set are.

26 Plusle

I found them all on ebay with the exception of Mew which I traded with a friend in the Philippines to get and Plusle, Minun, and Whismur which I don't have. No one to my knowledge has ever seen a Minun. We just got that information off of one of Plusle's attacks.

Smoochum was in the groundbreakers set so its not likely it would be in the unamed third set. but i'd love to get my hands on one of those too if you know where they are available
---------- Post added 10/29/2010 at 02:51 AM ----------
don't know if this will be helpful at all but i found one of the wholesalers that is offering the third wave figures individually (what ones they have left that is) there are a bunch of the ones that are only available in the large ebay auctions and the goldeen which is fairly allusive now. the prices are pretty steep and shipping is expensive (considering the prices are designed for bulk buys) but i supposed if you wanted to stock up on a bunch of one it could be useful. i don't think there is a minimum to buy so in theory you could go in and buy one figure but it looks like it would run you about $35 after shipping. the site is at:
