National Championship Attendance Figures

My favorite activity, collecting numbers ^_^. I'm just gonna try and stick to the PCI reported numbers for this, sry! But, if you know the numbers from your own National Championship, feel free to post it! Unfortunately, the only past numbers I can find are in this (http://pokegym.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1409232&postcount=1) thread. Not the most hard set of data I've ever seen, but I'm fine with it this year. We'll make it better next year, I'm sure ^_^. Big props to NoPoke for finding the National Championship links for this year, and to Fireborn for collecting this data last year. Couldn't do this without you guys!

26 Juniors with two dropping before R1 pairings so 24 reported.
63 seniors
96 masters.

I created three "dummy" player accounts to ensure that the ratings are correct for the three out of age players that remained after a week of clean up effort tracking down player IDs and duplicates. If the dummies played in other tournaments I changed them in those too so that the UK ratings should calculate correctly.

Thanks everyone for posting the numbers. I think Nats attendance from our area, Oregon, is a little light this year. Plane tickets were just soooo expensive! It's actually cheaper to fly to Hawaii than Indiana.

SENIORS: Singapore, Malaysia, Belgium (approx12:1)
MASTERS: Austria (12:1) , Malaysia, Switzerland,Sweden (approx 20:1)


And where is it HARDEST to get a trip to Worlds. (Obviously I'm ignoring countries without a paid trip as those are impossibles)

JUNIORS:
1st: France (80:1)
2nd: USA (50:1)
3rd: Germany and Netherlands tie at 28:1

SENIORS
1st: USA (74:1)
2nd: UK( 63:1)
3rd: Germany and Norway (52:1)

MASTERS
1st: USA (201:1)
2nd: Mexico (127:1)
3rd: UK and France (95:1)


So what does that lot mean? Given that there are so many assumptions behind a direct comparison of the numbers you need to look for BIG differences. The striking BIG difference is in the masters with the USA masters having at least numerically the toughest route to a paid trip. The seniors are too similar to say which if any of the four countries is hardest and in the Juniors France can make a case for being tougher than the USA.

In terms of spreads the differences between the hardest and easiest by attendance is around one order of magnitude.

Canada is included in the above calculations, though I had to use last years attendances

I just updated with the US, Norway, and New Zealand nationals, based on the OP site alone. If somebody has the "official" numbers announced at Indy, I'll use those instead.

Oh, and does anybody have the numbers for Singapore from last year? Or any Nationals I might have forgotten from this year? I just have a feeling this list is incomplete...

Nice numbers, Ian, just one small correction: it was even easier for Masters in Austria (12:1), as Austria had 2 paid trips per age group this year, one from POP and one from us. ;-)

The tournament was suppose to have five rounds of Swiss with top 4 cut. There were ~30 masters there with delays when it started. One of the delays was actually me not being on the pairings list, I was afraid that it was because of my US POP ID or something. It was inside of the mall with tables set up and for whatever reason, they had to cut the last round of Swiss making it so that the two 4-0's made cut and 2/8 3-1's made cut, in order to have time for top cut. Wai Kit Lam, a Hong Kong Local, won the tournament. The top decks were:

Canada was 59 SENIORS, and 128 MASTERS i cant remember the juniors

In Germany this might have to do with a very late announcement of venue and date and it was at a long weekend (public holiday on Sunday and Monday) where many people go on vacation --> result: all cheap sleeping opportunities in the vicinity were nearly booked out, cheap train rides for that weekend also booked out. The location was not as assessible as that from the last years, but I think that the late announcement in connection with an unfavorable date dropped the attendance below 300.

And as far as I´m heared, in contrast to the last years they did no advertisement at all.

(And they have a new Organized Play team, but I do not think that this had any influence at all).

Actually it had a positive influence, since the player numbers at Battle Roads, City Championships and State Championships increased a lot compared to the years before.

The reasons mentioned explain the drop very well, combined with the decrease of major prizes (trips to Hawaii were too expensive to give out three like in the last year).

But what I wonder about is that none of this problems (late announcement, long weekend, lower prizes) applied to Austria but they got an even worse (almost double) decrease than Germany. =/ Probably the booming numbers last years were just because of advertisement and there isn't a "stable" high player number like in Germany yet.
