Hey all you baseball fans!
The start of October means one thing: Playoffs :D
I know many of you will be watching your favorite teams this October(who are so lucky that Seattle just missed the playoffs cuz if they did it would be over :D )
So now that the 8 playoff spots have been decided, let's have a little competition: Predict the playoffs 03
Here's how it works.
Put your winners for each of the 4 division series and put a number of games they will win in. Example: Mariners win in 4 games.
Then put your 2 winners of the League Championship series and finally your World Series winner.
For each Division Series winner picked correctly is 2 points, championship series 4 points and the world series winner 8 pts.
For each division series winner picked with the # of games correct gets 1 extra point, League championship series 2 extra points and World series 4 extra points. I will go first:
Division series:
Twins in 5, Red Sox in 4, Marlins in 4, Cubs in 5 (almost go Braves, may change before Tuesday.
LCS: (league championship series)
Twins in 7, Marlins in 6
World Series:
Twins in 7
Now the Division series matchups are:
AL: Minnesota Twins vs. New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox vs. Oakland Athletics
NL: Chicago Cubs vs. Atlanta Braves, Florida Marlins vs. San Francisco Giants
Of course the 2 AL winners face each other and the 2 NL winners face each other.
First games are Tuesday so get those picks in before that. NO EDITS after the first pitch on Tuesday. The winner becomes the:
POKEGYM FANTASY BASEBALL CHAMPION FOR THE 2003 PLAYOFFS!
(and remember, Mariners 04 all the way. ;) )
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the Division Series (1st round) is a best of 5. The LCS and the World series are a best of 7 for those who didn't know.

Yankees/Red Sox - Red Sox in 7.

Whoops. Sorry guys, I forgot to mention that the Division Series (1st round) is only a best of 5. The LCS and the World Series are a best of 7.
Something Else and Captain Obvious please edit your Division Series picks to be out of a best of 5 since you have some picks in 6 or 7 in those series.
Remember, Division Series Best of 5
League championship series and World Series are best of 7
Sorry for the confusion. :)

Change all 5's to 3, all 6's to 4, and all 7's to 5 in the first round. That should cover it.

You could've just edited that post but what you did will work. But don't edit after today so I know you didn't change it. :)

I'm sorry Bullados but, it wouldn't really be fair to let you in now as the playoffs are well under way with even 1 series done. You can see how you would get an advantage by waiting until all the games are 3-4 games deep.
However, everyone feel free to post any predictions if you'd like for fun.
Baseball is exciting whether your playing or not!

Well they just won a thrilling game 5 against Oakland. For those who missed it:
Bot 9th, Sox up 4-3, bases loaded, 2 outs. Derek Lowe strikes out Terrance Long I think to send the Sox into the ALCS for an epic battle against the Evil Empire of the Yankees. :D
The updated standings:
Pidgeotto Trainer 8 pts  (Lost World Champion)
Captain Obviousx1 6 pts
RaNd0m 5 pts (Lost World Series Runner-up)
SomethingElse 4 pts (Lost World Series Runner-up)
ToysRUs Kid 2 pts (Lost both World Series participants)
With ToysRUs Kid losing both World Series participants this is now a 4 person race.
NLCS starts tomorrow. Cubs vs. Marlins
ALCS start Wednesday. Yankees vs. Red Sox
Should be exciting :D

Anybody thinks baseball is boring should show them the Bosox/A's series. Many heartattacks on both coasts during those games.

Yea, I was one of those people with a near heart attack last night... ;) Anyway, go Red Sox! :thumb:

Even though I'm behind, I think I have the best shot to win...the Yanks are usually a lock, and the Cubs just look like they have it this year.

After being down 3 games to 1 the Florida Marlins rally to win Game 5, Game 6 and today Game 7. They won Gms 6 and 7 in Chicago against Cubs aces Mark Prior and Kerry Wood. In case anyone missed it, yesterday in game 6 the Cubs were 5 outs from the World Series with a 3-0 lead with ace Prior on the mound. In the 8th following a foul ball that looked like it would be caught by Cubs Leftfielder Moises Alou was deflected by a Cubs fan when Alou reached into the stands. The batter walked and after a string of hits and an error the Marlins scored 8 runs to win. That brought us to today's game 7. 1st inning Marlins get a 3-run homer from rookie Miguel Cabrera. Cubs tie it in the 2nd on a 2-Run shot by pitcher Kerry Wood! In the third Cubs' Moises Alou hits a 2-run homer to make it 5-3 Cubs. In the 6th Marlins rally back scoring 4 after Wood walked the 1st 2 batters making it 7-5 Marlins taking the lead on a Derrek Lee single. In the 7th Alex Gonzalez of the Marlins hit a 2-run double to make it 9-5. (There is also a Alex Gonzalez on the Cubs ironically.) Cubs get one more but lose 9-6. Marlins pitcher Josh Beckett who pitched a complete game 2-hit shutout in Game 5 came in relief and pitched 4 innings giving up just one hit. Ugueth Urbina got the save. Marlins catcher Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez who set a NLCS record with 10 RBI was named the series MVP. The Marlins are going to the World Series!
Also today, the Boston Red Sox forced a game 7 against the Yankees by coming back from a 2-run deficit in the 7th taking the lead on a bases-loaded walk to Johnny Damon. In the 8th Trot Nixon hit a monster upper-deck 2-run homer to give Closer Scott Williamson the lead he needed to nail his 3rd save of the LCS and a Sox win. Okay the standings:
World Series pick
Pidgeotto Trainer 12 pts Twins over Marlins -----------
Captain Obviousx1 6 pts Yankees over Cubs in 4
RaNd0m 5 pts Cubs over Twins ----------
SomethingElse 4 pts Red Sox over Giants in 6
ToysRUs Kid 2 pts Giants over A's -----------
I still have the lead as the only one to pick the Marlins to come through.
Still either Captain Obvious or Something Else will have a team in the series.
Tomorrow, Game 7 Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees
Pedro Martinez vs. Roger Clemens
Pedro vs. Rocket, Game 7, Boston and New York, a can't miss game 7.

Unfortunately the Yankees beat the Red sox. :(
Pedro vs. Rocket
Clemens started getting hit in the 3rd and 4th giving up 4 runs in 3+ innings including a 2-run homer by Trot Nixon and a run on a Enrique Wilson overthrow. Pedro was going strong making only 2 mistakes the 1st 7 innings. 2 Jason Giambi solo homeruns. In the top of the 8th, David Ortiz of the Sox hit a solo-shot off of David Wells to make it 5-2 Boston. In the bot of the 8th Pedro got the 1st out. Then Bernie Willams got an infield single. Eventually, with 2 runners on, Left-handed Hideki Matsui was up. Instead of going with the lefty pitcher Alan Embree, the Sox left in Pedro. Matsui got a double making it 5-3. Pedro stayed in the game with runners on 2nd and 3rd to face Jorge Posada. Posada hit a little blooper to center scoring both runs to tie it at 5. The Boston bullpen of Timlin and Embree were able to stop the bleeding. In the top 9th Red Sox got a man to 2nd but could not score off Mariano Rivera. Yankees were shut down by reliever Mike Timlin in their half of the 9th and we went to extra innings. In the 10th again the Bosox got a man to 2nd and couldn't get him in. Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield came to pitch for the Sox and shut down the Yanks going to the 11th. Top 11th, Mariano Rivera's 3rd inning for the first time in something like 3 years. He still shuts them down. Wakefield continues to the bot 11th and first batter Aaron Boone somehow jacks the Knuckleball deep into the night (After midnight in New York) to send the Yankees to the World Series with his brother Bret Boone a commentator on Fox during the game.
Both Boston and Chicago were 5 outs from the World Series and both didn't.
Call it what you'd like. (cough*Curse*cough)
So starting Saturday we have a Marlins vs. Yankees World Series.
Go Marlins!!

World Series pick
Pidgeotto Trainer 12 pts Twins over Marlins -----------
Captain Obviousx1 10 pts Yankees over Cubs in 4
RaNd0m 5 pts Cubs over Twins ----------
SomethingElse 4 pts Red Sox over Giants in 6
ToysRUs Kid 2 pts Giants over A's -----------
Well it comes down to the World Series. If the Marlins win I maintain my lead for the win but a Yankee win would give the championship to Captain Obviousx1.
Better luck next year Boston. Next Year you will beat the Yanks to the East title and then only lose to the Mariners in the ALCS with a BRET Boone Walk-off HR.
But for this year the Florida Marlins must defeat the Evil Empire. :thumb:

Sorry I forgot about this. Anyways everyone should have heard by now, that the
FLORIDA MARLINS ARE THE 2003 WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!
The Marlins defeated the Yankees in 6 games about 10 days ago. Marlins won game 1 but things weren't looking good when the Yankees won game 2 and then game 3 in Florida against ace Josh Beckett.
In game 4 Roger Clemens pitched what is most likely his final game against Carl Pavano. Pavano pitched well and so did Clemens but the Marlins were ahead by 2 in the 9th. The pen blew it and game 4 went to extras when the Yankees tied it. When it looked like the Yankees would not be stopped, Alex Gonzalez of the Marlins hit a 12th-inning Game-winning walk-off homerun to tie the series at 2-2. In game 5, Brad Penny stepped up big for the Marlins and the Marlins bats finally came to life as the Marlins would take a 3-2 lead heading back to New York. Game 6, a real pitchers duel. The Marlins scratched out a run in the 4th and 5th I think making it 2-0 Florida. Though the Yankees pitching was good, Marlins Josh Beckett was better. He pitched a complete game shutout with just the 2 run insurance to beat the Yankees and make the Marlins World Champions.
Josh Beckett was named MVP of the World series.
So with the Marlins win:
Pidgeotto Trainer 12 pts
Captain Obviousx1 10 pts
Rand0m 5 pts
SomethingElse 4 pts
ToysRUsKid 2 pts
Looks like with the Marlins win, I win. :)
Thanks you to the others for playing and happy hot stove league. :)
