Round 1:
Me vs. California
Zapdos vs. Dragonite

He won the roll and said I could go first. I had normal set up, electrike gets the energy, I get the turn 2 Zapdos. He strikes and runs gets some basics out. I lock him down with Mt. Moon. He couldn't search for the darks or evolutions. I win with the continuous Zapdos attacks.
A very sportsmanlike guy I enjoyed playing.

1-0

Round 2:
Me vs. California
Zapdos vs. Slaking/Blaze

He went first using strike and run. I had terrible setup, two electrikes out, and when I searched for the energy I found out I only had two Zapdos in the deck. About turn 5 or 6 I draw the Lanette, get the Zapdos, play it and get a prize from a ko. I find out he has all the torchic in his prize later on while I was able to get the 2nd Zapdos in my hand thereby using my scoop up on the other. I eventually draw the 2 Zapdos that were in my prizes and win the game.
A guy that was very polite which did make the game go easier.

2-0

Round 3:
Me vs. California
Zapdos vs. Slaking/Blaze

He goes first has the slakoth out for starter, he plays no energy and passes his turn. I have regular set up with turn 2 Zapdos. He starts makink a come back with some dunsparce first one strike and run. The next dunsparce does 10 dosen't paralyze so I ko that one. He brings out Slaking knocks out the Zapdos. I take a few turns to recover while he knocks out a voltorb. I send out another Zapdos knocking out the Slaking. He has nothing with much damage to me left, I hence a few turns later win the game. He may have done better if not for his bad set up.
A very tough opponent.

3-0

Round 4:
Me vs. California
Zapdos vs. Moltres/Blaze

He goes first with only Moltres out attaches an energy, I have voltorb and energy charge. He attaches to Moltres plays torchic to his bench and passes off to me. I have the Zapdos in my hand but nothing to get other Zapdos so I play an electrike to the bench evolve voltorb to electrode and mass destruction. He sends the torchic out and burns me , I take no burn damage, I energy charge and he plays some more torchic to the bench. I go take the burn damage send out Zapdos and dual ball for 2 more, I start attacking with the Zapdos eventually he runs out of pokemon to retreat and I score a win.
Overall a very nice guy hope to see again.

4-0

Round 5:
Me vs. California State Champ
Zapdos vs. Slaking/Blaze

He goes first with dunsparce gets some bench. I have electrike and search for an energy. He paralyzes the electrike while evolving his bench. I don't have the Zapdos, so I cozmo and still get nothing. He does some more damage to electrike has Blaziken and Slaking ready on the bench. I steven's advice for 6 cards and finally get some Zapdos I start attacking with the Zapdos getting a few prizes he comes back with 2 Slaking set up and defeats both Zapdos I send against him. I eventually lose.
A good player I could tell his deck was bit different from most of the others.

4-1

Round 6:
Me vs. Team LA
Zapdos vs Zapdos/Pidgeot

He goes first, and dosen't get good set up with Zapdos as his active. I have good set up with electrike, and get the energy. He plays a voltorb with the energy on the bench. I get the Zapdos out and get a few knock outs. He later plays some claw fossil as well as getting the Electrode ex into play knocking out the Zapdos with discarding an energy and adding a strength charm. It went down hill for me from there.
A good opponent that has superb strategy. I didn't find out he was pokegyms Team LA till after the tournament.

4-2

Top 8:

I'm in the 5th position.

Round 7:
Me vs. California
Zapdos vs. Slaking/Blaze
I go first getting good setup with electrike getting the energy. He has no energy passing his turn. I play the Zapdos attacking. He sends out a dunsparce searching for some basics. I reversal the pidgey on the bench koing it, from there a win for me.
2nd game he searches with the dunsparce gets blaziken out next turn. Unfortunately he's drawing no energies giving me the win.
A good oppnent. I say good game he says for you maybe.

Semifinals and final match coming up later...

Yo Martin,

I stay in the shadows except when I TOTALLY AND COMPLETELY disagree with someone's ramblings... =/
HEY if this guy went through SO MANY of Team LA, cool props, THEN he absolutely EARNED It... sure I wish the results would have been different... but alas best person won...

Just a game and been there done that with the attitude issue, not much has/will change...

SO kind of you to describe our FRIEND as a nobody =/
a Nobody is nobody when the somebody loses... always was and always will be... ;)

Tho, I saw chung's reaction on that OTHER post, I can't defend ALL of their behavior either...
AT LEAST I Heard SOME of my friends MADE some money... and ENJOYED the view @_@

Nice to hear you say so. One of the reasons I enjoy the game of Pokémon Soooooooo much is because of these people specifically. Most of the current and past champions in SoCal are not just great players, but gentlemen & good sports. They don't post much on the board but if you go to their Gyms you will find some of the most inventive decks, as well. I have more fun losing 5 games to Jerry Dominguez or Jesse Esquivel or (sorry the list is too long) than winning one game vs. some of our loudmouth braggarts/bashers (not gonna make a list, they are self evident). Jacob, our CA State champ is of the same quality, though I don't know him as well. Not only do these guys handle themselves well, but their teams/gyms are influenced by their leadership and the young guys (and gals - hello Lancaster 11-14 prerelease champ) learning to win/serve from their coaching are conducting themselves in the same way.

When the world comes here in August, they will meet some great hosts.

Anyway, nice report and very hearty congratulations on your victory!

Hey Bulbasnore! I will second your thoughts....My son is only 11 and just loves playing those guys in Cali. We have had many opportunities to play them here in Arizona,in Cali and some of our other trips.
They really make the game enjoyable win or lose. Thanks guys for giving my son more confidence each time he plays ya! You cant put a price on that! ;)

From what I heard you got freakin lucky, but you also pretty much beat all of team LA. That can't be all luck, I give you credit for becoming the new Nevada State Champion. Even if it was an act of God or some kind of miracle, I'll take luck any day.
Next time please get the names of team LA .

I'll finish this up now.

Semifinals:
Me vs. California State Champion
Zapdos vs. Slaking/Blaze

I started the game off with Zapdos as my active. He starts off with a good start with dunsparce using strike and run. I spend the next turns attaching energy while my opponent is setting up his bench. I search successfully for my 3 other Zapdos attacking and scooping up with very good fashion. I think I probably failed only once on any searches or scoopups that game, and hence won with not much resistance.
Next game he goes first with dunsparce I start with Zapdos again. He searches for his bench while I decide not to give him any extra turns by sending electrike to the bench then using a warppoint, then searched for the energy. He evolves rapidly by getting his pidgeot out and evolving some of his other bench. I search for a zapdos and start attacking while he starts hitting me with slaking. Every time I grabbed all my Zapdos from my deck to my hand he kept admining me, slowing me down a bit. Eventually he does a double knockout on an electrike and a zapdos taking two prizes. He later plays desert ruins damaging the 2 Zapdos I have in play. He defeats another Zapdos making our prizes one left each. I send out Voltorb, evolve into Electrode and blow up.
The judges find out what all the right things to do are, and we start SUDDEN DEATH.
SUDDEN DEATH MATH:
According to the rules my opponent starts off and he has pidgey. He attaches and uses his attack. I have electrike, I use steven's advice in a funny manner drawing one card and saying "Beat that", I use electrikes attack and say go. He uses rare candy into pidgeot searches for admin and plays it, I look at the card and realize what this means (someone said beat that! in the crowd), I start laughing at the card making me draw one card which was electrode, he attacks me for 40 and it's my turn. What I draw is TV reporter letting me draw a perfect hand of electric energy, Zapdos ex, and Mt. moon. Mt.moon is discarded (which I almost forgot I was so dang happy) played the Zapdos, and attached the energy, attacking and winning the game.
Judges present said, best game of the day. I concur with their statement, that match kept me on the edge of my seat.
A great opponent, hopefully I'll face him again.

Final Match is Next

Finals:
Me vs. Team L.A.
Zapdos vs. Zapdos/Pidgeot

I went first. He had only a pidgey, I had electrike. I attached then attacked. He used TV Reporter, and found nothing. I brought out Zapdos attached an energy and won the game.
Next game:
He started with pidgey again attacked, and I started my move. I had electrike which I used to get the energy. LA made a few attempts to throw me off, I pretty much won the game without much resistance.
Match time 11 minutes 43 seconds

I had a great time at states, and would like to thank all that supported me through these rough matches. Hopefully at regionals or wherever next we meet we'll be on more friendlier terms. Thanks everybody for your comments on this thread.

Pig, you were not "screwed out of [your] title." The tie breakers worked exactly as they were supposed to.

POP has responded personally to your rude, inarticulate emails regarding the tiebreakers several times, yet you continue to ask the same questions after each premier event. In fact, Dave personally spent and hour and a half rebuilding the results of the Nevada State Championship just to make sure that everything was done correctly.

Since you seem incapable of understanding the way the tie breakers work via private email, perhaps you'll understand them via a public forum...

If two or more players have an identical record after the final Swiss round, the tie breakers are applied in the following order:

1. Strength of Schedule: Add up the final point scores of each tied player’s opponents. The players with the highest Strength of Schedule score receive preference to advance.

2. Head to Head: If players with tied records and Strength of Schedule scores outnumber the number of available seats in the finals, and those players played during the Swiss rounds, advance the one that won that game.

3. Time of Loss: If players are still tied at this point and the previous tiebreakers did not select a player to advance, give preference to the player whose first loss was later than the other tied players. If the first loss of all tied players happened in the same round, look at the second and subsequent losses.

After the final round of Swiss, you and the player in question had the same record, the same strength of schedule, and had not played each other head-to-head. From that point, tie breaker 3 was applied. You lost in round 1, the other player didn't lose until round 4. Tie breaker 3 CLEARLY states that the other player was to advance. Had your first loss occurred in round 5, instead of round 1, you would have advanced to the finals, instead of the other player.

What is unclear about this?

you have a point but i still had a better tie breaker than him so i win try again

You are correct; we were wrong. We said you lost on the third tie breaker. You actually lost on the first tie breaker.

After round 5, your overall strength of schedule was 16-9 (64%). The other player's overall strength of schedule was 17-8 (68%).

I guess that means that you were wrong too.

You lost. End of story.

Pig: Okay, you got your answer directly from POP. QUIT taking this thread off topic; if you have anything else to say about your standings in the NV tourney, deal with it OFF THE BOARD with the appropriate parties: POP and/or PT&E.

Further posts concerning your standings/tiebreakers/the 'unfairness' of it all  will be deleted, and you'll earn yourself a temp ban for continually breaking board rules. Got it?

Back on topic, PLEASE...

Mike, Thank you for posting the detailed explanation of the behind-the-scenes tie breakers. I knew the general guidelines, but not the specifics. You were very elegant in the explanation.

Fellow Pokemon players and judges, as I mentioned several times at both CA and NV States, the order that TMS places players in standings is absolutely correct--it proved to be true at both events. The data that Mike mentions is exactly what was printed on the standings sheet at NV States. This same sheet was posted for all to see, was given time for any errors to be reported (none were), and then became final!

Phillip, I am only going to offer this once in warning to you: please desist in your efforts to undermine the integrity of premier events, and the positive spirited comradery amonst the players (both CA and NV). In the end, you will only be harming yourself and I would hate to see that happen.

Finally, PT&E enjoys organizing and running Pokemon events--the judges and players are the best in the industry (believe me...I run events for all the other major games). We thank all the players, judges, staff, and parents who attended both States events.

You'all have a good April month--we'll be back in full force at the end for Emerald.

Cheers.

Great job man, another title stays were it belongs thanks to your skills  oh, and by the way, you may want to check out this thread http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=17368 especially if you havn't seen the top 4 deck list posted on PT&E's website.

Hey Stripes guess what Pokegym did, check the thread link in this post. And they didn't even give PT&E1 a chance to post on it and clear things up nice :nonono: .
