Hey everyone! I bet you can't wait to read this 20 bazillion page tourney report on my last tourney in the 11-14 division! (My 15th birthday is April 24th, FYI).
Sunday morning I got up at 5 AM to get ready, because we’d have to leave at 7:30. I got some last minute things ready to go, and we busted out the door. At 8:30, we met Jas at Hobbytown in Brookfield. Fifteen minutes later, Eric and Matt (PokeWisconsin and Rulemaster) came, and Jas, my brother, and I got into the back seat. We headed off toward Manitowoc!
On the way, we listened to a lot of music and did a lil’ bit of talking. Nothing very special, but there was a long day ahead of us, so we were all basically relaxing.
We arrived around 10:30 AM. Right when we got there, we saw Team Chicago including WILL! I hadn’t seen him since the Niles, IL Gym Challenge last year, so it was a nice reunion of two extremely rivaled players (if you didn’t know, Will and I have played four times in sanctioned OP. Three of the four times it was last round, so we ID’d). However, today I most likely wouldn’t be playing him because I was still in 11-14, and the attendance was off the charts for a WI Pokemon event - 74 players!
By the way, here is my deck list!
Pokemon (23)
3 Larvitar (TRR #62)
2 Dark Pupitar (TRR #40)
1 Dark Tyranitar (TRR #19)
2 Dark Tyranitar (TRR #20)
2 Mareep (TRR)
1 Dark Flaaffy (TRR)
2 Dark Ampharos (TRR)
2 Pidgey (FRLG)
1 Pidgeotto (FRLG)
2 Pidgeot (FRLG)
4 Dunsparce (SS)
1 Jirachi (HL)
Trainers (25)
4 Celio's Network
4 Rare Candy
4 Ancient Technical Machine [Rock]
3 Steven's Advice
2 Crystal Shard
2 Rocket's Poke Ball
2 Copycat
1 Mr. Briney's Compassion
1 Warp Point
1 Rocket's Trickey Gym
1 Pokemon Retriever
Energy (12)
4 Darkness
3 Fighting
2 Lightning
2 Double Rainbow
1 Scramble
After about an hour of delays due to being unorganized, the first round pairings were posted. From the looks of things, I was paired against my brother, Cody.
1st Round vs Cody (Dark Dragonite/Dark Electrode)
But wait.... as soon as we started playing, Jimmy told us to stop playing. There were some players that were not paired and some players who were paired twice. So.... we pick up and we wait nearly half of an hour for the real results to be posted.
This time the pairings are right.
1st Round vs Nicolas (Sceptile/Slowbro)
He started with a Treecko, and I started with a Dunsparce. I Strike and Run to fill my bench with Larvitar, Pidgey, Jirachi (I already had a Mareep on my bench from my opening hand). I switch for Jirachi. During his turn, he attaches to his Treecko, plays another Treecko on his bench, and passes. A couple of turns later he still has no evolutions and I have a Dark Ampharos, a Dark Tyranitar, and a Pidgeot. I switch for Ampharos and do 40 to him with Ram. He evolves his entire bench that turn, and passes. I switch for Dark Tyrnaitar, and play ATM Rock. During his turn, he stupidly evolves yet again. During my turn, I use ATM Rock for game, KOing his entire bench in one shot.
1-0; 3 points
After that game I am feeling quite confident. That Jirachi really got going, contradicting what Dark Jake said to me via AIM a few days before. So, I had to play the Jirachi just because I like to be a rebel.
2nd Round vs Chris (Magcargo/Swellow)
When I saw what he was playing, I about laughed myself right off of my chair. However, my start was horrid. I started with a lone Mareep, and almost lost turn 3 because I didn’t have any benched Pokemon. However, a lucky top deck, Dark Flaaffy, saved me. I then got a Pidgeot line built and a Dark Tyranitar line built. He may have started up by 3 prizes, but it didn’t matter then. I had him locked, and there wasn’t much more he could do other than attempt to keep me Paralyzed.
2-0; 6 points
After this round, both Cody and Jas were 1-1. I felt kinda bad for them, but I know they’d make a come back to some degree. They are Brookfield’s other two best 11-14 players!
Round 3 vs Nathan (Gardevoir/Gorebyss)
During this game, Alex from Team Brookfield was sitting kiddie-corner from me. He got his butt whopped by a kid named Justin who was playing the same deck I was playing against. Anyways, I had a decent start - a Dunsparce and no energy. He had an okay start as well. After a while, all of our big, evolved Pokemon basically collapsed on each other and ended up in our discard piles. It was Larvitar vs. Root Fossil for a while until I top decked a Dark Tyranitar. I played Rare Candy, and owned his Bench for my last 2 prizes. Great game. It went quite slowly for both of us.
3-0; 9 points
After this round, I went downstairs into the store and talked to Jed for a while. I found of that the Midwest Regionals would be in Madison, WI on May 14th. I was so excited about that! Then we talked about Drackmere, IA’s TO for a while because Jed wanted to know more about him. FYI, Drackmere is an awesome guy!
Round 4 vs Justin (Gardevoir/Gorebyss)
This was basically the only game all tournament that I got set up well. He didn’t get a Gardevoir, and he didn’t get a Gorebyss. I locked him down very, very quickly, making this 5 minute game the shortest all day by a long shot.
4-0; 12 points
After this round, My Parents Basement gave everyone pizza for lunch. We hung out for about an hour or so, and went on to play round 5.
Round 5 vs Alex (Dark Tyranitar/Dark Dragonite)
I really, really didn’t want to play Alex. He is definatly one of the best 11-14 players in Wisconsin. However, sometimes you have to do things you don’t want to. So, we started playing. I had no clue how I could win witha terrible set up like this. However, a well timed ATM Rock shut him down, devolving three of his stage two Pokemon back to basics. That shut him down pretty well, and I made my comeback. Why am I so good with comeback games?
5-0; 15 points
After this, everyone thought I’d be playing against Jeff of Jimmy. However, they end up playing each other, so I’m paired against some kid.
Round 6 vs Dan (Nidoking/Nidoqueen)
I can’t believe I almost lost this game. Neither of us had any energy for like a billion turns. However, I got every first, so I took out some of his basics and evolutions. He got a well timed Nidoking, though, and took a prize or two. I quickly put out Nidoking’s torch, and had to deal with Nidoqueen. However, the turn before last, he evolved his benched Nidoran M and Nidoran F so they had 4 damage counters on each. I sent Dark Tyranitar active, and ATM Rock’d for my last 2 prizes. Great game!
6-0; 18 points
Now, at this point, if ID-ing were still legal.... lmao. Just kidding!
Round 7 vs Jason (Dark Dragonite/Dark Electrode)
Finally! I get to play my old 11-14 rival who is brand spanking new into 15+. I basically started terrible with 2 Pidgey. I couldn’t do anything, and he used Dark Electrode to take me out within turns.
6-1; 18 points
I obviously make top cut. In fact, I make it in 1st seed! By this time, though, it is already 6:30 PM. Everyone just wants to quit and go home. Unfortunatly, I am the only person in our carload of five who made the top cut. So, they had to wait for me, and I felt really badly.
Top 8 vs Jake (Poliwrath/Gardevoir)
Jake is a cool kid, but his deck just doesn’t seem too cool to me. I whip through the first two games quickly. I move on to the top 4.
7-1; 21 points
After this, Jeff beats Alex, Justin beats Nathan, and Kevin beats Jessica. The top 4 pairings look like this.
Jeff vs. Justin
Me vs. Kevin
Top 4 vs Kevin (Vileplume ex/Bellossom/Glalie)
Being that Kevin isn’t able to go to Nationals, he concedes to me. However, we play it out anyways, and he actually beats me 1st game, I win the 2nd game, and he won the 3rd. I would have won the first, but I played the wrong Tyranitar from my hand. If I would have played the Sand Damage one, I would have won the same turn. However, he did concede to me, so the finals are now.
8-1; 24 points
Finals are Jeff vs. Me.
Finals vs Jeff (Dark Tyranitar/Dark Ampharos/Pidgeot)
Our lists are near identical. However, why play out this game? Its already 9:15 PM, and Jeff already won IL States. He gives me the win.
9-1; 27 points
The day was excellent, and everyone got what they wanted. I gave Jeff the trophy and the States package. I gave Kevin the packs because I felt really, really badly for him, because he is an excellent player and wasn’t able to go to Nationals. I got what I came for, the $300 travel allowance, and that is all that mattered.
On the way home, we talked about random things, and we saw Kevin and his family at McDonalds. It was an excellent, but long day. I ended up going to school the next day with 3 hours of sleep under my belt.... *yawn*.
Props:
-Jas for coming to States with us
-Enno’s for driving
-Team Brookfield for having full attendance
-Team Chicago for bringing on the competition
-Jeff and Kevin for everything they did for me all day
-Jessica for being a great competitor
-Manitowoc players for attempting to interfere with the Team Wisconsin vs Team Chicago war
-Jed for being a cool TO
-The yellow envelope with the papers that will get me to Nationals
-Added to make equal to slops.
-See above.
-See last slop.
Slops:
-Delays, delays, and more delays
-Starting with Pidgey fifty billion times
-Jirachi for being so cute. He needs to be strong!
-McDonalds because there food stinks
-Cody for eating almost the entire backpack full of food we brought along
-Me for being broke
-Top 8 for running so late
-For attempting to make the slops as long as the props
-Read above
-Read above
-Catch my dirft yet?
-Whoops. Now the slops are longer. Gotta add to the props.
See you all at Regionals in Madison, WI on May 14th and at Nationals in Columbus, OH on July 1st!
