When I first heard about Soul Calibur for all the systems, I was very happy. Here is the lineup:

PS2- Heiachi
Xbox- Spawn
GCN- Link

Obviously, being a "Nintendo only" gamer, I played the GCN version. OH...MY...GOD!!! IT WAS AMAZING. After renting it twice now, I have uncovered so much, so I decided to start the review sooner.

Story
The story is very interesting. After reading each person's profile, it helps the gamer understand why each character is on the quest to gain/destroy the Soul Edge. Obviously, this also promotes the the character him/herself.

Graphics
I'd love to share my ture feelings about how amazed I am, but it requires words that would be censored . This game has some of the best graphics for a GCN game ever since Wind Waker and Metroid Prime. All the animations of each character (especially on Maxi :D ) are perfectly created.

Sound
The sound is just as good as the graphics. The voice acting is available in Japanese and English. Some of the voice acting is kind of cheesy though. With some of them, they sound like "hi, im a fencer dude. lets fight. I'll 0wnz0r5 you so much." Ok, so that last part isnt true, but you get the idea. Either way, your better off to set the voice acting to Japanese.

Gameplay
The gameplay is ssssoooooooooo good, Namco probably used a GCN controller the entire time while making the game . The controls are very good. Combos can easily be executed because of this.

Overall
Overall, the game was great. Weapons Master mode was a great addition to the game. Because of this, you can unlock so much more stuff. Using this mode of gameplay, you can unlock Exhibition Theatre, which allows you to see your favorite characters show off some of their special moves. Also with Weapons Master Mode, you are able to unlock the Arcade Ending :D

Problems
The only problems I found were minor collision problems (weapons/body parts would "sink" into the floor of an arena) and a very rapid shift of difficulties with Weapons Master Mode missions.

+ Great graphics
+ Great Sound
+ Great Replay Value
- Minor collision detections
- Rapid shift of difficulties

Final Verdict: The best fighting game you'll ever get for the GCN ever since MK: Deadly Alliance

Overall grade- 9.25

I agree, by and large. I have yet to try out a GC joypad with the game - that was actually my main reason for getting the X-Box version. Maybe I'll rent it. I'm a massive Zelda fan, so it was quite a mind-crushing dilemma; even more so seeing as how you guys are all still able to type.

Anyhow, the voices have a broad quality range. Ivy and Yoshimitsu, I thought, was particularly well done. Cassandra would be the other end of the scale. Yeesh. Sophitia regains her annoying ear-splitting shrieks from the PS1 game Soul Edge, which isn't necessarily a good thing, but they were so obvious in their absence on the Dreamcast. And finally, would it have been so hard for the actors to find out who their characters were? Like give Nightmare a German accent, or Raphael a French one?

The minor collision detections are really minor - I've only experienced them in about one out of every fifteenth or sixteenth match, and they were rarely significant match-swingers. Still, neither older version had these in them, so they shoulf have been a little more careful in catching them.

I have a couple of other little things that bug me, like the pointless random selector - you can see who you've been assigned and change it - and the lack of move lists for Lizardman, Assassin or Berserker. Luckily I'm familiar with all three from the Dreamcast game - Assassin and Berserker are basically Hwang and Rock - but it would have been nice to see what's changed.

I've played the PS2 version a few times now, and I think it's one of the best games EVER made!

My favorite character is Talim, but she says very annoying things, like: "are you OK?". Who Cares?!?! Just knock 'em out!

Anyway, I compleatly agree with your review, but I havn't experienced bodies sinking into the ground yet...

Its usually the weapons at times. And like I said before, they were just minor collision detections.

GC pad is.... BLECH >_<

I played the original on DC, so the xbox controller is just so much easier and better for me to use. Its easier to hit more than 1 button at the same time.... and yes i know u can use the C stick, but its still not as easy as using the other stuff.

If they would let u configure the controls, then the thing would be fine, but they don't, so i love the xbox pad for it so much better.

Yeah, i liked your review. The game seems a bit faster than the original, which is alright. I liked the old weapon master thing better, but this one is still good.
