I think it's interesting to see how late night talk shows compare in peoples' minds.

But I'm just wondering something: why do people like David Letterman over Conan O'Brien?

Letterman acts like...well an idiot...and that's supposed to be funny? And his monologues sound like they came from a joke-book. And we all know how funny those are.

If you ask me, and I know you didn't, the rankings for the only relevent shows are:

Conan > Jay Leno > Craig Ferguson > Jon Stuart (if you count him) > Letterman > Carson Daily

I've never seen Jimmy Kimmel's show so , he's not up there.

Conan's the best since he can be goofy, but just enough so that it's funny and not just plain stupid. Plus the Max Weinberg 7 is the best house band on TV. Conan's monologue is always funny (that's why he beats Jay, who is sometimes just so-so).

Carson's the worst (and not Letterman!) because it is just painful to watch some of his interviews. They sound forced, like watching just some guy try to talk to a stranger on the street.

So why do you like who you like?

(To mods: Z? means "question sleep," from a Jhonen Vasquez comic)

conan is the man. i mean, he's had the walker texas ranger handle, triumph the insult comic dog, "in the year 2000," "if they mated," SAT analogies, and the hilarious "interviews" with bill clinton, arnold schwarzenegger, george w bush, michael jackson, etc where they use a portrait and have some guy doing the lips and voices. oh, and preparation h raymond (and that bear with the diaper whose name i can't say here). i am more a fan of the sketches they do than i am of the monologue, but it's all good.

the daily show gets my second place with leno third. i think we ALL agree that carson daly's show sucks, though.

Jon Stewart is number 1. Anyone who's ever watched the Daily Show knows that. I'd place Leno #2 and Colbert #3. (Yeah, he has his own show now.)

You've obviously never seen any type of political satire.

John Stewart is definitely the best. Heck, did any of those other guys make a book? I didn't think so.

I've seen enough of Letterman's monologues to tell he is not very funny, at least compared to his rivals. And during his interviews, while not completely uninteresting, he still isn't as engaging as even Jay Leno.

He takes forever on stupid sketches and dumb stuff like balancing a pencil over his lips or making geezer noises! How's that for comedy?

And I really feel bad for Carson. His show is just terrible. Awkward silences are too frequent. And the whole "I'm hip, yo," thing isn't working.

In related news, how do you guys think the Conan-replacing-Jay-in-2009 thing is going to work out? Will they keep Max and the MW7? What will happen to poor Kev and the TSB? Will Conan's style make the transition safely intact?

Will Conan's increased budget disallow him to make jokes at the expense of his show's poverty?
