I am curious if it's okay to use a 20-sided die at a tournament. I had a lot of people complaining at the last tournament I was at that using a 20 sided die is not allowed, but according to the offical rules:
"• Randomizers other than coins may be used with the Head Judge’s
permission. The Head Judge must dictate which result will be considered
heads, and which will be considered tails."

Should I check with the head judge at the beginning to make sure its ok to use a/the 20-sided die for "coin flips", or should I just stick to a six-sided die?

Personally, I prefer a 20-sided die to a 6-sided.
Much better randomization, since you can't just "drop" it like some people do with a 6-sided.
But I don't allow 10-sided dice in my tournaments. They are not ideal shapes and can be manipulated.

Basically, as you found in the official rules, it's up to the Head Judge. You can ask ahead of time. And if someone objects, call over a judge if needed.
