View Full Version : Serious iPod problem.

God, this is a horrible dilemma.
Help me before I rip my hair out.

Recently, my PC had a fatal crash.
My parents, stupidly doing whatever without making sure of things, went and bought a Mac.
They ASSUMED that since it already had iTunes on it, I could transfer all of my music.
However...
I remember, only a week before the crash, that the iTunes folder in My Documents only had less than half of my songs in it.
That means, the only way I can get the music onto the Mac is by buying it again, or using it from iPod.
The latter, an unlikely option, since Apple went through so much trouble to make sure music isn't being shared at all.
Please, I don't want to have to buy over $250 to get all of my old music onto the computer.
Ask questions if you need, I know I left something out.

[edit]"Serious" is in the title.

dont you have a backup cd(s) with all your music/pictures? If not, the only way to get the music would be to get the music from your pc hard drive (if it istn part of the "fatal error") becuase Itunes doesnt let you download the songs you buy on multiple computers, as you already know.

I told you, not even half of my library was in a folder.
And yes, every single thing was erased.

Let me see if I understand your situation.

Your PC(a non Mac) had a crash that caused a number of problems to the computer. Is it even operational anymore?

Either way, your parents went out and bought a Mac. Of all the music on your iPod, less then half of it was currently on your computer. Since that's all you have, you can't get the rest of the music off your iPod onto to your computer? Or vice versa?

Am I getting it right? Your post is kind of confusing. To me, anyways =P

EDIT: Okay, I think I got it. Ouch, that really sucks. Hmm....I really have no ideas(other then getting the music from other sources). And I won't say any more about that as I'm not sure where the legal boundary is.

So all the music is in your Library. And not on your iPod. I'm pretty sure you can export the music you do have on your iPod out on the new computer, and transfer what you do have from the old computer to the new one. Where does that leave you damage wise?

Oh, there is something I forgot.
Since the iPod is registered to the PC (before it crashed), I cannot register it to the Mac, or even to the PC (after it crashed).
I'll try what Metal Masher said.

I'll try what Metal Masher said.Ah, that makes more sense. If you can access your iPod still(to manage the music on it), you should be able to export everything there to a folder on the Mac. If that doesn't work, try sending it to the Library and then export it.

The folder should be no problem to transfer over. As long as it survived. :P

Let me know how it goes.

Ahh, nope.
an't export onto Mac, only creates a 14Kb notepad page.
well, my parents haven't bothered to reinstall the back up onto the hard drive.
I have to figure that out in a few days.

Dang. Hmm...know any friends with iTunes? You "could" export the music out on their computers, then transfer it to yours by way of burning a CD or emailing as an attachment or something.

That's the only other idea I have.

my friend had to buy a new ipod, and she called apple and they transfered her songs to her computer at college ( a mac) and transfered the songs to her new ipod
perhaps if they have a record of what songs you bought, they can do a similar thing for you
not sure if itll work, but its worth a try to call and explain your delima

There is nothing you can do.
What is on your iPod is not the actual data files.

What you could have/should have done, is used your iPod as a USB storage device. Go to my comptuer, and look there, you'll see your iPod as a storage device. From there, copy all the music on your hard drive onto the iPod (by draggin it into the iPod's folder for music). Then, even if your computer crashes, your music is on your iPod, which is acting like a giant storage unit (a gigantic floppy disk, if you will)

As for your situation, unless you can re-access the hard drive, there is nothing you can do yourself.

The best option to do is to call Apple. Plead to them, and give them your account information, and ask them to send it to a new account that they can make for you- and you might have it there.

If you do that, back up your music by putting it ON your iPod.

Do what you want cause a pirate is free~ You are a pirate~

But anyway, the problem sounds like it stems from dumb "anti-piracy" measures, so take that as you will. But, aside from that, lol, Limewire (http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e366/Ambix/1151543979.swf).

I think Metal Masher's idea is the best.
Most of you guys are IDIOTS.
excuse my french.
c'mon, I'm pretty ****** off right now.

BTW limewire is shareware, right?
You still have to pay monthly.
Otherwise, it is pirating and illegal.
I'm not in the mood to be ticketed.

There's no advice in that at all.
I love the italics for my name, too.

It's really good that there are swear filters on this site. This post would be filled with asteriks if I typed what I wanted to say.

Seriously, if you weren't an idiot and knew how to take care of your iPod, your purchased music, and your computer, you wouldn't be in this situation. Please, when people try to give you advice and you do nothing but act like a retard, it's YOU who looks like an idiot.

I hate you.

If you can get your itunes on your mac to work with your ipod you can do this to save all your songs ontoy our ipod:

Connect your iPod, it should automatically update, hurry and click cancel or else you'll lose your songs.
Then go to Edit > Preferences> Ipod tab then set it so that you manually update your ipod, this way your computer doesn't automatically delete your songs from your ipod and you get to add new ones.

If I was you, I would do the following, First I would call the company that ur comp that crashed and burn is from, explain your problem, they should be able to fix the problem. They might ask you to send it in, cuz sometimes when a comp crashes, it loses info, but it is still there, you just need to know where to look. I would def. recommend calling the company and explaining or go to a computer repair shop and talk to them about it...

I love how people assume that everyone who pirates gets caught.

Lol, Limewire.

First off eI, I give you a gift (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v339/TheOneHero/PSO/snapshot_120205_224441.png)

Second, chances are there is no way to recover the music that you purchased on the iTunes music store because of the crash that occured on your PC.

However, for future reference, here is a nice tutorial I searched up for you on Apple's site

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173

Also, there is a Mac version of BitTorrent incase you don't wish to spend more money on all the songs that you lost...

Either way, any luck with any of our ideas?

Actually, I haven't yet.
The Mac has not been hooked up on a jack, or anything, so there's no internet.
Right now, I'm just waiting for things to happen.

BTW Arthras0, thanks.
Well, at least, with that, I can prevent this from happening again.
