One question... do you think you will have to have a entry pass into one of the DW parks in order to get the world championship area.

Oh my God... Those prizes are insane...

Nintendo is putting a TON of money into this, giving away all those scholarships and trips...

Not to mention the invites system is excellent, the invites get bumped down, so there actually will be ~45 players from the US invited, I cannot wait for this...

This is pretty cool what they have put together for the tournament. Very nice indead. Maybe I need to get me a invite to play.

Also that they are bumping the invite and trip to the next player if one has already won one.

The 'last chance qualifier' is probably the same as the grinder tourney the day before Worlds 2002: single elimination, run in age groups. The top X number of players get to enter the Worlds tourney the next day.

One question... do you think you will have to have a entry pass into one of the DW parks in order to get the world championship area.

Nope. Placing the Worlds Championships in one of the parks is costly. Epcot does have some meeting space, but again the issue of cost, special WDW transportation into Epcot's backlot area, and limited space arises when you consider that. Nobody in their right mind would hold any event in one of the parks, it costs around 45 bucks for a one day ticket into the theme park itself for non-invitees. That would result in limited press, staff, and attendees in side events.

More than likely, Worlds will be held in the Wyndam Hotel itself. There is quite enough space for such an event. If not, there are several other larger convention spaces in WDW hotels, as well as the Wide World of Sports complex which housed the Magic The Gathering JSS Champs/US Nationals in 2002.

Regarding the theme parks, I just hope that PUI includes three-four day tickets to the theme parks for all of the invitees. Walt Disney World is a blast, especially when you have a multiday ticket to go hop from one park to the next. And I have to say that I've been riding with some of the most friendliest Monorail and bus drivers on the WDW resort, one bus guy who even went out of his way to drop us off at the correct place when we got on the wrong bus. It's going to be awesome. :D

honestly, all that is great, but the thing that makes it all worthwhile is the SCHOLARSHIPS

being in college, i'll take any scholarship in a heartbeat.......

money, money, money...

btw, have they estimated how many people will receive invites?? just curious as to how many people will actually be playing....

TheDeuce

btw, have they estimated how many people will receive invites?? just curious as to how many people will actually be playing....

Well, you can kinda figure it out somewhat...

Top 16 in United States POP ranking ---- 16 players
Top 4 in each age @ Nationals ---------- 12 players
Top 4 in each age @ Stadiums ---------- 36 players (assuming there's 3)
Top 1 in each age @ Gyms -------------- 30 players (assuming there's 10)
Each Reigning World Champion ----------- 2 players

Total: 96 players (not to mention however many from the grinder...)

Of course, this is assuming the amount of Gym/Stadium Challenges there will be, and I assume there'll be at least 3 Stadiums and 10 Gyms, and since the invites/trips do get "bumped" to the next eligible player, all of the trips will go different people.

Also, note that this is just the US, there'll probably be something similar for all participating countries, so expect a decent sized tourney.

Pablo
03/15/2004, 02:27 PM
Yeah im really wonderin what is up with other countries. Will the top 1 surely be US only? or will it be Worldwide? How will other countries recieve trips and stuff, I for sure know there will be a Gym Challenge here, but I really wish that is not the only way I will be able to earn a trip. I'm currently 7th global so I'm really hoping the top 16 referse globally.

*crosses fingers for the top 16 being global*

This is not Worlds this is US only.
Most Europeans kids have to go to school again after that weekend and even earlier, so if they win at Nationals they are not allowed to stay out of school and cannot go to worlds.
(or can we use the scholarship money to pay the fine we get when you keep you kid out of school?)

I mailed long ago to PUI to please take care with planning worlds because of the holiday differences in Europe (even give them the weeks Who are prefered after some research), but again it seems they don't want Europe in this game at all.

We are not getting Stadium and Gym Challenges at all.
City events ( only 4) will run to end of may and with Nationals on june 27 it's all we get.

It's all clear to me now, Europe is good to earn money on product and only that.

Aren't you allowed to call them in for a week or something? Here you can go on a vacation and take the kids out with a note from a parent. I mean... you could tell them it's for an educational thing which in a way ISN'T lie you're competing for a scholarship to a educational place lol.

Hey Doug
First, thank you for your support. It means alot to me. I posted something like this on an earlier thread

"At the professor championship I played people from other countries. It was a 13 hour tourney. 2 different types of drafts and modified. I lost 1 time all day. I played a rogue counter in modified, no archetype for me. It was touted as the "Professor Worlds Championship" by the judges and the TO's. Call it what you want. I won the worlds biggest tourney for 15+ last year. It's that simple. And yes, I have contacted Nintendo and I am waiting for a reply."

Don't you think that it would send a strong message to the age group (15+) that buys the most product that they are wanted in this game if Nintendo invited last years professor champ to worlds? The funny thing is, Ttar won the prof championship in 2002 and got a trip to Seattles' worlds. This years champ gets a trip to the 2005 worlds. Psycodad, you get a rock.

Rainbowgym

I live in a country which wants to get all kids untill they are 16 get proper education.
So that's why the have to go to school from age 5 untill 16. There is no choice.

If one of my players gets an invitation, I doubt if he or she will get permission to stay away from school.
We have different laws overhere and some of them are hard, but the other side is that we don't have much people who can't read or write.
You need official permission and that's very hard to get, and believe me going to a tournament is not a legal reason.
Schools are checked by "learning officers" and specially at the start and end of a schoolyear.
You are in serious trouble when they find out you keep your kids away from school and the fine is $500 a day, a kid.

Last year wotc did two big "final" tournaments....at gencon and san diego con....
I think pyscodad should get an invite but perhaps so should some of the san diego

this could also be why nintendo(at the moment) is not using 2003......

I should note that ranking invites are global based. So you have to be top 16 in the world not just your nation to be in the tournament. There are no national based ranking invites according to my notes.

Another fun factor is that invites and trips will bump down to the next player in the case of a multiple invite winner.

Wow, I hope you all can see what an absolutely fantastic opportunity this gives! Armed with this info, I could go into just about any middle, or high school, talk to a guidance counsellor for 5 minutes and hand him/her a flyer that says something like this:

Wanna get a scholarship for playing something fun? As reported at "website such and such" , along with other cool prizes, Nintendo is giving away scholarships ranging from $1000. to $7500. for 48 people. For those who have played the game, now is a great time to test your skills. For those interested in learning how to play, building new skills, and gaining new friends, come to Gamer's Lair in Barrie on Saturdays, from 11 to 3.

You could also cater to the College/University crowd by putting up posters saying something like, "Would you like the opportunity to get more funding for your tuitions while doing something fun? As reported at ....."

Hey, it's a great marketing idea that will get many parents thinking. Maybe here's another way to help your leagues to grow. I'm going to try it out, hopefully we'll have an increase in participants.

I know the European players won't like this but..., I'm sure Nintendo did the best they could with the scheduling. At least here in the U.S., between State Championships, Nationals, Gym Challenges, and Stadium Challenges, there's at least 1 major tournament almost every month until Worlds. If you ask whoever you need to for permission now, and bring up the scholarships and that you would only be missing 2-3 days. I think you might have a better shot.

Let me make myself much clearer.

Without any trips, Worlds would be a glorified Florida State Championship.
Nobody would be there.
Without trips Pokemon would suffer greatly.
Without trips Enthusiam would dimish.

However, someone like PsychoDad who was able to afford to
attend Origins already, would at least like an Invitation to Worlds.
Since trips do cost money and there is only so much money to go
around, an invitation is better than nothing.

There are people who should be honored in some way.
My modest request would not cost Pokemon USA more than
a 39 cent stamp. Is that too much to ask?

Let's give BOTH

the 2003 Pokemon Professor World Champion

Nah, IMO it's all about defending the title. Ex-champs have been dethroned by the current champ, so no need to bring them back. They have to earn their way back up through the ranks like the rest of us.

As for finding a defending 15+ champ, I say we go back to the Prof Champ and invite PsychoDad. (Hey ProfDougZ, being from Florida, if you had beaten Dave last year, you might have gotten a free trip to your own state. :) )

Mom "Yes, dear, we'll look for ones with batteries."

Furret looks at Umbreon
Furret and Umbreon laugh
Furret hops down from the bench.
Furret "Where is the nearest Pokemon Center?"
Umbreon "Come on, I'll buy you a lemonade."
Furret "I miss my backpack...sigh."

Umbreon "Don't forget, this Hotel has been here awhile."
Furret and Umbreon go into the Convention Center.
Umbreon "This is nice, and very well kept up!"
Furret peeks into the Great Room "Wow -- that is big! They could
hold anything Pokemon here."
Umbreon "Maximum Occupancy 2,445 people. The Hotel can split this
room up into half and quarters as well."
Furret and Umbreon see several big rooms and lots of little rooms.

Umbreon "You know Doug had a dream last night. He was helping
staff at Worlds, and they were giving packets or something to the
Players who were going to play the next day, but MTM was running
it instead of Nitendo. Anyway, MTM got to the last packet and
it had Doug's name on it. Doug was surprised, he didn't expect to
get an invitation."
Furret sniffs "Doug won 2nd at the Pokemon Professor World Championship 2003,
3rd at the Fan Appreciation Event 2003, and judged in the Team
Battle World Championship 2003. Of course, MTM would have made sure
Doug and others got an invitation."

Umbreon and Furret turn the corner and get lost in this big Hotel.
Furret "Ummm...where is the lobby??"
Umbreon "I don't know, but this sure is a nice place."

Later, after finding the Lobby and getting information,
Furret and Umbreon walk around the swimming pool-spa area.
Furret "It looks like 2 buses run between Magic Kingdom and
all of the Downtown Disney Hotels. They drop off guests and
then swing back by to pick up guests when the bus is empty.
With 2 buses, they can pick up people about every half hour.
Each of the other 3 Theme Parks are connected in this way.
This service is free.

Furret sits down by a tree.
Umbreon "Rates are about $129 up to about $199 depending on how
full the Hotel is. A group convention rate would drop that a little bit.

Disney's Pop Century Resort and all 3 of Disney's All Star Resorts
are $99 a night and that price doesn't increase when they fill up.
Transportation from any of the Disney Resorts becomes easy
when you realize that if you take a bus to Downtown Disney and
get off at the first Bus Stop, then you can cross the street and
walk to the Wyndham Hotel.
All Disney Resorts have free Disney Bus Service to all Theme Parks,
Water Parks, and Downtown Disney.

The wind ruffles Furret's Fur.
Umbreon "When I called this morning, the Wyndham did not have a Pokemon
Convention scheduled for it yet. Don't forget, there are at least 3 other Convention
Centers on Disney Property.

After looking on Hotels.com, it looks like the Wyndham is full for that weekend already.

yea but since im going, and im going to win :D ;)

when i get my prize, i really dont need the scholorship money (seeing as i already have a full scholorship) but i was wondering, if I, or someone in a simalar situation could donate the money to a charity? i would love to help a kid who is not as forunate as me, and who diserves it (ie works hard and gets good grades)

You donate that scholorship money right TO ME, godtrainer =P

Yeah, I'm 19, and some money for college would be nice, seeing as how I'm paying for it myself now. So yeah, 15+ can definitely use scholorships...
