Fossil Excavator is only good for fossil decks, but it is great for them. It is the only trainer to get fossils in the format and the only one other that TSD to get Pokemon from the discard pile. It is a must in any fossil deck.
9/10 Modified beast in fossil decks
2/10 Limited only good if you pulled enough fossils

This works best in a deck that plays mainly fossil evos. One nice benefit is that you can extract cards from the discard! The only problem is that there aren't any excellent fossil cards out there right now to retrieve with this card... so...

In decks including lots of fossil evoled Pokemon like rampardos lileep ETC; this card is the best supporter you can have.

This is a required card if you're playing a fossil deck - Rampardos is probably the best Fossil card in today's Modified, though I'm sure it'll see more play if there are any more good Fossil cards in upcoming sets. The beauty of it is that it can nab you a Fossil or its evolution from either your deck or your discard pile, something Fossil decks had problems with in previous years.

Fossil Excavator is a must for any Fossil Deck. It can search either the discard or deck for a Fossil Trainer or Stage 1/2 Pokemon that evolves from a Fossil. Sadly, though this itself is an excellent Supporter for Fossils, Fossil Pokemon in general suck horribly and are still largely unplayable.

Modified - 6/10 (Excellent support for Fossil Pokemon and should be ran in 4s, but the Fossil Pokemon themselves suck)
Limited - 10/10 (With both Rampardos and Bastiodon in the MT set, this is an excellent way to search them and their Stage 1 forms)
Unlimited - 4/10 (If for some reason you're using a Fossil Pokemon like Fossil set Aerodactyl here, this is a decent way to search them out)

This card helps balance out the hit fossils took in the DP era rules. Everyone knows how versatile Holon Transciever was by allowing either a deck search or a discard pile search, by restricting this to cards that have fossil on them or Pokemon that evolve from them helps balance it out. While I won't say fossil based decks are unplayable, they definately have their weaknesses. The biggest weakness before this card was searching for the fossils themselves as cards like Celios and Holon Mentor could not pull fossils out as they are trainers in the deck. Budew helped a bit, but it's rather fragile itself. This card allows a fossil based deck to function much like non-fossil based decks. The downside is that for the most part the fossil pokemon are not good enough to offset the basic being a fossil. I do think this card can be put to use as a tech line to help get out a spcific fossil based pokemon. It also combos well with Holon Fossil (HP) if you have more than 1 of a given fossil in your deck to help get them onto your bench.

Modified 4/10 (Unless you are playing a fossil based deck then 9/10 only because it's a supporter)
Limited 6/10 This card allows you to attempt to play even a small fossil line, but again the fossils themselves and their evolutions are not that great.
