Yeah, the real shrink wraps for the WotC boxes features the WotC logo while Nintendo ones feature the Poke Ball logo with the word "Pokemon" on top.

I mainly look at the bloated energy symbols, especially the stars on the card - they are such a telltale signs. Look at any card above and you will see that the five points of the star on the colorless energy are well within the circle for a real card but are either shifted or enlarged for the fake ones. :colorless

My daughter got an EyeClops microscope for Christmas and one of the things we looked at was the edge of the real and fake card. Well, I can tell you that both of them are made by gluing two layers (some of the older guides on spotting fakes suggest that the fake ones are a single layer cards).

Another thing that I have seen is the frayed edge. If the fake card has been played or has been handled for any length of time, you will see clear fraying on the edges - little white marks on the edge give it away.

As for color difference in the back, if you put the fake card in a real deck and shuffle it a bit, the fake one stands out like a sore thumb.
Hey I know. Like, My friends give me alot of fake pokemon. Like, in my deck, I was GOING to use a Regirock, but the back of the card is ALOT lighter than regular cards, and so does stand out. This is a very helpful guide, though. Thanks.

    Really?
That doesn't sound right. Glacia's Stadium is from PK, not a new set.
I know they were still leaving it off on DP fakes.

What do you think of this?:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Pokemon-Diamond-...QQcmdZViewItem

It says the site of the Pokemon TCG (in this case Go-Pokemon). Any way to distinguish fake booster packages and authentic ones?

The plastic wrap doesn't have the logo on it, so that's why I'm skeptical. There could be many reasons as to why the wrap does not have the logo on it, but that's running on the word "if".

Doesn't ebay have any rules about selling illegal counterfeits?

I would like to believe so, but nowadays eBay isn't as great as it used to be (in my opinion anyway).

They admit in the auction that it's a fake.
Not sure why you need me to confirm it, but i will.
If you see a sealed box and there isn't the Pokeball logo on the shrinkwrap, it's fake.
The packs are harder to tell. As you can see, they are not centered properly, but to be honest, I've seen real packs that way too.

yeah, I would think ebay would catch them, in fact ebay even said in one section that they will not sell fake cards!

I had a kid at league today with a ton of bad fakes from MT. The Mag X was not even foil. The Typh and mesprit were not foils. So many errors on the cards. The boy's Mom bought them before Xmas in Texas at a Dollar Store in Magnolia, TX. Sold as "stocking stuffers" ...I say more like profit stuffing. These packs had more Walrein in them than anything. Some had foil treatment, others didnt. She thinks the store's supplier was from Houston TX. Cookie....any fake sightings your way??

Nice! Mind you, some holos in the delta species sets had gold borders, but only very bright shiny gold, not the sort you had. BTW did you confiscate all these cards just to scan them?

I, or any other League Leader, have no authority to confiscate anything from anybody!

I bought most of them from a shop that was selling them. They pulled them after I told them what they were, but I wanted to get some anyone to educate my league members and to do this article.
The last one was given to me by a league parent from a box of counterfeits he mistakenly bought.

I made the mistake of buying a counterfeit box of D&P boosters off eBay a little while back... forgot to look for the Pokeball logo on the shrinkwrap. Fortunately, I was able to get my money back, and now I know what to look for. One thing that struck me was that there were a bunch of tiny holes in the crimp at one end of each pack. Also, some of the packs had the flap on the back really scrunched up. Somebody opened real boosters, took out the cards, and then refilled and resealed them. Subtle, but definitely something you can look for before you even buy the packs to avoid being burned. One or two packs that I opened also had an extra layer of clear shrinkwrap lining the inside of the pack, which made them exceptionally difficult to get open. Other than that, everything inside looked like everything else in this thread: bloated energy symbols, wrong fonts, typos, bad colors, ugly foil, and fake cards from other sets.

We had some at league a couple of week's ago. The child willingly gave them to me so that I could check them out with a couple other local league leaders. He said they were purchased at a local large retailer (not verified by parent). We know he did not intentionally put them in his deck. He had NO idea! Is there anything I should do with these cards to help Pokemon on their quest at cracking down on this happening?

    Thanks a lot!

I wish I had read this sooner-- the other day I purchased 60 dollars worth of boosters, and they were all fake except for one pack (what's up with that? and the one legit pack sucked.)

Waste of money, and I trusted the store-- they sell legitimate tins and theme decks, and apparently SOME legit boosters... I bet they were laughing their faces off after I left...

I've started finding more fakes around league lately. Most were bought either individualy or from super cheap packs.

They have obvious tip offs like:
    -Energy symbols wierd
-Holo patterented picture, but not actualy holo
    -RH exs and Lv.Xs
    -Non foil exs and Lv.Xs
    AlexandOS - my project.

My friend back in South Bend bought a bunch of cards, all great encounters, for really cheap at a flee market, but there was something funny about them. They were discolored and the holos werent shiny, and the boxes they came in had artworks of pokemon and trainers that werent even in great encounters! Like the image of the girl form Galactic Mars!
They must have been fake, but at the time we just assumed they were store rejects or misprints that pokemon sold at discounted prices. The man said exactly that when asked by my friend.
One really funny thing is that every Grovyle, maybe 12 in all, evolved from Tangela! Even though it pictured Treecko, the text read "Tangela." Another card, i cant remember which, evolved from "Rhyodn." It wasn't a Rhyperior card, as they were all great encounters, but the text misspelled Rhydon as "Rhyodn."

I think the best way to avoid fake cards is to support your local store that you play in or theshop that the prof from your league uses. And always the best deals may end up beenthe worst ones.
I made it in 10 minutes in between PVP runs and came 3rd in Cities

I don't know how many people I've shown this article to as a means of helping them spot fakes better but I'm so happy it's here.
However, my friend n' I have a chunk of fakes that aren't listed here that are made in mexico n' commonly sold at the indoor swapmart just down the street from me. They are extremely obvious fakes that have a myriad of giveaways to the fakeness:

*Their printed on the WORST cardboard stock I've ever seen for anything other than the poorest quality of baseball cards from the early 80's. Very shoddy medium.

*The cards have no rounded edges, they are quite pointy.

*The 'artwork' on each card looks like a very bad remake of whatever pokemon is supposed to be on the card and the colors are terrible to begin with. I would be happy to post pictures of a few if anyone is interested, I don't wanna jumble up the thread with huge picture posts. ^^'''

*the copyright info at the bottom is dated 2006, i think. Some of the fakes in this bunch are ugly copies from emerald, which I think came out around '04-05, right? Their also labeled Ninfendo.

*The card types......wow, I don't even know how to go about telling you, they're soo horridly off, perfect example: A brown salamence with a fire symbol on an orange card.

*pokemon names are soooo....not pokemon names. Exceptional titles include: Compoundeye moth, Flying mantis, kerato empress, voice king and Yugwara.

*......and probably the best of the bunch is a "sableye" that has nothing in the way of sableye on the card but something rather obsecne involving psyduck and bulbasaur. I'm not kidding.

There is a shop in one of the malls I live near (metrocenter) that sells a steady amount of fake DP cards, they even sell fake Yu-gi-oh & Digimon cards. Because of this place and the swapmarts in my area, I see a pretty high amount of fake cards coming thru the saturday league I help run. We try to tell people as much as possible that they should stay away from the fake stuff but a lot of the new kids we get seem to have almost nothing but fakes. *Sigh*
