I know that the attendace to the danish nationals will drop a lot, since the location is bad. It will be great if we reach 100 people, but I dont think so...

Updated with last weekend's Nationals. Looking good so far, all but 2 of all Nationals have been up in numbers since last year :D
I'm not sure about the Netherlands either. On the one hand, it wouldn't surprise me if we had a lot of players, but on the other hand, the location is not as good as last year (especially for players from the region I'm from) and the fact that the tournament is on 2 days instead of 1 may put several people off... But we'll see :)

I think personally that they don't go to Nationals because we had here more Juniors at City Championships than at Nationals. So my conclusion is to do Nats were most Juniors players are^^

^ Tbh I think both are true.
Of all the player divisions, Juniors are the players who tend to play more casually. Alot of Masters and some Seniors would be prepared to travel 4-5 hours and stay overnight in a hotel for Nationals. Most Juniors wouldn't do this. Looking at the Europe Invite thread, the Juniors has alot lower cut off for an invite than Masters and Seniors. They don't attend as many tournaments as seniors and masters. However I have noticed some bad attendences in the Junior division. Is the problem that the Juniors that move up to Seniors each year aren't replaced? I've seen alot of Junior attendences of 2-3 at tournaments which is pretty worrying. |

I think that the fact that a lot of European Nationals are now spread out over 2 days discourages a lot of Junior players from going.
For instance, I have several (decent/good) Junior players at my leagues who will play in BRs/CCs, but whose parents won't travel 2-3 hours for Nationals, especially when they know they will probably have to spend the night if their child makes the top cut.

So those parents prefer to have their kid playing untill 9-10 PM and than travel home? That is another sound than I heard last year when they were complaining it ended to late. It's never oké no matter how you do it.

The parents with kids who do actually travel to Nats, know what Nats is like, etc. obviously do prefer to stay there for 2 days. But that's not the majority of the Junior attendance, I think...

Quote Fireborn: "No, those parents prefer tournament that end at around 4 PM and that are within 30 minutes driving distance... Mind you, these are kids that only play local tournaments, and they and their parents have no idea what it's like playing a National Championship."
And that's why leagueleaders step in and tell/show them how much more fun it is to participate.....

But like I said, I can convince the Seniors/Masters to go. The Juniors just rely on their parents to take them, and the parents just don't feel like travelling for so long for a Pokemon tournament. There's little I can say to convince them, even though it's pretty easy to convince the kids that it'll be a great experience. The distance and the idea of there possibly being 2 days of play just puts some of the parents off. And looking at the Junior numbers all over Europe, I think that goes for other countries, too, which is what Ian's remark was about.

Same thing in Norway. The little peninsula of Nesodden where my sister and I run a League has almost only Junior players. Out of the 10-11 regular Junior players, only two of them traveled to Nationals, even though we gave them all big, colorful A4 flyers that besides Dragonite also featured a helpful map of how to get to the locaton. And getting there would only take one and a half hour at most! Several parents are very supportive of their kids' hobby, but only two of them are willing to wake up at 6.30 on a Saturday to take them to some tournament in Oslo.
