This is a good place to get an idea for a team, and then the Team Help forum would be a good place to tweak it after you've played for a while and have an idea of its weaknesses.
I'm just going to assume VGC. Don't take me too seriously because I don't play VGC, I just read a bunch about it in theory. When I construct a team, I start with just one Pokemon I decide I want to use (for sake of example, let's say Infernape, I like Infernape recently). I make a set for that Pokemon to use as a starting point: Infernape @ Focus Sash & Blaze 160 SAtk 252 Speed 96 Atk Naive Nature - Fire Blast - Flare Blitz - Close Combat - Fake Out The idea behind this set would be to abuse Blaze - use Flare Blitz to get to lowish HP (or use Focus Sash), then smack everything with powerful Fire moves, with CC for coverage and Fake Out for utility. Then I think about what would pair up with this Pokemon well. Something that could benefit from a powerful Fire-type smashing things out of its way... well, Dragon Pokemon don't like Steel types but Infernape completely destroys those, so how about a Haxorus? Haxorus @ Life Orb & Mold Breaker 252 Atk 252 Speed Jolly Nature - Outrage - Earthquake - Brick Break - Dual Chop Now I've got a powerful offensive pairing that opponents might have trouble finding an answer to! You don't have to start with offensive Pokemon, you could start with weather, or with a defensive support set, or whatever you want - just find something that pairs off well with it. Then think about what messes those two things up. In this case neither of these guys like Trick Room, so maybe an anti-TR Chandelure might be good (just throwing it out there): Chandelure @ leftovers? & Flash Fire 252 SAtk 252 Spd Timid Nature - Trick Room - Imprison - Shadow Ball - Fire Blast We can Imprison to prevent other Pokemon in play from using Trick Room. He pairs off nicely with Haxorus too, being able to smack Steel-types really hard with his own high power Fire Blast. Knowing what kind of threats your team will struggle with is kind of a familiarity thing, but if you aren't sure, type advantages is a good place to start - Infernape doesn't like Ground or Water moves so how about something that can take those? Haxorus doesn't like Ice moves so how about something that can take those? And so forth.

Moved for the reason that this topic is about teams, and team building. The other area is for questions such as: Where can I find TM 23 in (insert game here).
