Well, have fun at the game. I don't know which is a bigger accomplishment you making T8 Regionals or T?? at the Grinder. Didn't you go 7-1? Aarght!

Edited: Price reduced (we'll go with smaller prizes and no judge compensation). We have some families sending multiples and the $20 price was too high.

My Grinder record? It was 4-1 (Main Event did 8 rounds, we did 5). Yep, Hot Carl beat me in round 5... you can read all about it in his report. I think JohnnyBlaze said that I might've finished higher than he did (maybe like T18) since I had beaten him in round 3 I believe. Didn't matter anyway, only the undefeated guys got in.

Anyway hope to attend at least 1 of these... all dependent on UCLA's football schedule and LMU's schedule.

i have a couple questions about the team draft....

1. can anybody come? (or do you have to have already played in a previous pentathon tourny?)
2. Is there a limit to the number of people allowed in?
3. How many packs will each person get to draft?

also, do you have any idea when it will end?
Thanks a bunch!!

How long do Rochester drafts usually take? Because if it ends soon enough I can make it even though there is a football game on that same day (the game starts at 7).

Oh, and if I go to the Team Modified I still need a teamate.

Hey there! Sorry to be late on answering (vacation):
  1. yes, anyone can come
  2. 18 is how many I have product for, we should have plenty
  3. equivalent of 6 packs per person
BTW it isnt TEAM (that's the 24th and its constructed, not draft). In 2v2 you play with two active PKMN and 4 max. on the bench. All those nifty attacks that say 'both defending', etc. come into play with this format. PLUS you draft the equivalent of 6 packs per person.

If you've never done Rochester draft it goes like this:
  • Stand together in pods of 8; person #1 puts a marker in front of them.
  • Lay out 3 packs worth of cards, face up on the table.
  • On Go,
    • first person takes a card, then the person to the left, then the next until the last person, who takes 2
    • now come back the other way until you get to the first person, who takes 2, then go back the other way til you run out
    • now move the marker to the left one person
    • Repeat with another 3 packs until you have opened 48 packs!
  • Everyone goes aside and makes a 40 card deck; I supply basic energy.
Rochester Draft is fun, it goes fast and you can 'counter-draft' if you're sharp (e.g. you see someone take Meganium, so you take all the Bayleef). Rare drafting works well in this format, so if you're after holo and EX you get a good shot at them, since everyone gets a chance to go first and some people actually pass on those cards to get a 'more powerful' non-holo (more powerful in draft that is).

Well, you don't need a partner for the event on the 10th! While you're there, maybe you can come up with one for the event on the 24th!! See you Saturday!!

Thanks to everyone for 2 perfect pods today.

G/J KT for completing the crew and winning 15+ "The last shall be first."
Justa Granda to have Patrick #1 in 11-14.

Props to Dan for lunch & bringing the neo-League crew, Dean for pointing out that the boosters say "For Age 10 and older" (but you still have to help us get 10- players), Aaron for having a Dad who picked up some UF boxes for me while we were playing, Laura & Gabe, Mary (3-1 !!!) & Chris & Edg..er, Alex for popping up without warning , Pat & Sean for pulling all 4 EX in Pod #1, Steve for popping in out of nowhere to dump his collection, Marc for sorting out the prize cards, neo-Leaguers for sorting the energies, David for coming 10th at grinder and at our event (and for having tickets to the UCLA game today), ES Library for having a rocking facility for playing and Krista S. for reserving the room, Roberto for having an unspeakable record and still being cool about not wearing phones during the match, the Brooks Bros. for being dapper players as usual and for also showing up on surprise, Matt & Aaron for the Blastoise/Shedinja exhibition match, 2v2 format for being fun and different and UF for being a great set and ALL the parents who brought out the non-driving players!!!

Slops to the kids in ES & Malibu working community service projects today that didn't show up (j/k - we support them), Steve for showing up out of nowhere to dump his collection, David for not having an extra ticket for me, Aaron for not giving me a reason to say he was freakishly lucky and fiendishly clever, Jon for playing Starcraft instead of spoiling our perfect pods at #17, me for going on too long with props & slop.

OK folks, hope to see you ALL and more out of the big UN-sanctioned TEAM tournament, same time and place, but date is Sat, Sept. 24.

Jon preferred Starcraft over a draft? Wow. Tourney was fun... got 10th twice in a row now lol. Aaaand, got the Crocs and Totodiles I wanted ^^

Anyway UCLA 63 Rice 21. GG.

Actually it was GG at half (UCLA 49 Rice 14 at halftime). Ouch.

... Hey, its not my fault for mom ordering only three tickets :p AND season tickets :) Hope to see you on the 24th.

Special thanks to Mark & Stephanie De La Torre and Bob Ash for extending and testing the Team Play rules to include smoother play and elements of 'double battle' rules.

The following rules are adapted from their work. We will use the version of the rules BELOW (only) for this unsanctioned tournament. They are presented here so you can begin to prepare your deck for the Pentathlon V tournament.

Set Up
Team members sit diagonally across from each other.

Both teams flip a coin to determine the starting team. The winner of the flip decides which team will go first.

That team then picks which of their players will be first. Turn sequence starts with that player and play continues clockwise. Each player draws 7 cards. Each player places their starting and up to 3 bench Pokemon face-down in front of them and places their 3 prize cards face down. Any player who cannot place an active waits until those who can have placed active and prizes then reveals his/her hand to declare a mulligan.

Mulligans

If any player does not have a basic Pokemon in his/her hand, the player opposite may draw one card (unless that player also had a mulligan, in which case both players opposite shuffle in and try to set up again without drawing extra cards). The player who mulliganed would then shuffle, cut and draw the same amount of cards that he/she had in hand again. Once that person resolves the mulligan.

Game Play - Special Rules for Team Battles

  1. Players may not show their hands to their partners or the table at large.
  2. Only the active player may initiate conversation with their partner; this conversation is limited to a few brief yes or no questions. Instructions & dialog are not permitted, nor are answers other than yes, no or maybe.
  3. In general, play should keep moving, excessive questioning and thinking that draws out a turn such that plays are not being made may be considered technical stalling. A judge should be called to observe play should this occur.
Card References
  1. Pokemon Cards that refer to "you" or "your" in its attack refer to the attacking player and his or her cards.
  2. Trainer and Supporter cards that refer to “you” or “your”, refer to the player or his/her partner as that player designates.
  3. Cards that refer to "your opponent's Pokemon" refer to the opponent that you are attacking, or your choice of opponent, if you are not attacking. (If it refers to "each of your opponent's Pokemon", it refers to Pokemon of the opponent whose Pokemon is being attacked.)
  4. Cards that refer to "each Defending Pokemon" will affect both opponents' Active Pokemon.
  5. Powers that refer to “the Defending Pokemon” refer to both opponents’ Pokemon. Cards that refer to "all Pokemon in play" refer to all Pokemon in play for both teams.
  6. Cards that refer to "your other Active Pokemon" refer to your partner's Active Pokemon.
  7. If a card refers to "your opponent", you are allowed to chose which opponent you are targeting, unless it is a part of an attack, where it is implied that it is the opponent whose Defending Pokemon is being attacked.
Special Conditions

Players check for and/or apply damage from special conditions between turns before and after their turn. Paralysis condition lasts until the end of the turn of the player with the paralyzed Pokemon.
