Magmortar SW, Bibarel DP, et al

Hey guys, Magmortar's body says that when you attach an R energy it takes off 2, and Bibarel's attack is rest (takes of 4, puts you to sleep) now, do you need to have atleast 2 (or 4 respectively) to trigger any healing, or will it work with less than...I'm pretty sure it'll work with less than with stuff such as potion, even though potion says it works with less than 2, albeit it is in parentheses which I've learned is the same as a 'given' in this game
