New collector seeking knowledge!
Hey there folks,
I've just recently got into Pokemon, I don't really play as yet but I love the card and character designs so I've bought a whole bunch of cards. 1000s actually! I'm just sorting them out and I've come across some questions that I'm having difficulty getting an answer to so was looking for help! I'm sure this may have been asked 1000s of time before so apologies if so but it's regarding holo cards. Am I right in thinking that in the early sets holo cards had their own separate numbers (two versions of Zpdos for example, one holo one not and both with different numbers) but in the recent ones this is no longer the case? I ask because my older sets seem to do this but I'm not sure the newer ones do. I've got a secret encounters set for example and have a lot of the early cards but few of them are holo, so does this mean that there are holo versions of that card that share the same number? If I have the non holo version of a rare does that have any trade value? I think that's about it, thanks in advance for anyone that can help. |

Many of the early sets had both the rare cards as both holofoil and non-foil with different numbers. Wizards of the Coast, in particular, was known for this since it increased the number of rares in a set thereby increasing the size of the set. Starting with Legendary Collection, however, Pokemon cards were released with a parallel foil version of every set, meaning there was a foil version of every card in the set from that point on.
Now, while the e-reader-compatible sets were in production, Wizards/Nintendo still had to make a non-holo version since they couldn't print the e-reader codes on holofoil cards, but overall this become more uncommon since every card had a non-foil and a foil version.

In Jungle, Fossil, Aquapolis, & Skyridge, there were a holo and non-holo version of each rare card.
From 2002 through present day sets. There is a alternate holofoil version for each card in the set, alternates have holo covering most of the card (around the attacks) except for the picture, and can be any card from the set, (excluding ultra-rares.) You (usually) get 1 alternate per booster pack. So, the Zapdos you are describing seems to be from Fossil, which printed #15 as a holo and #30 as a rare. I hope this helps, and good luck on the collecting!

Ahh, ok, massive thanks guys.
I've got a secret encounters set for example, and none of the rares are holo. All the early cards (1-20, roughly) have no holo on the text or picture. Was this normal then, and are these rares in any way collectible (ie could I use them as reasonable trade value) or are they just not worth it without a holo picture? Thanks again! |

what do the backs of the cards look like? one of the easiest ways to check if cards are fake is to compare the back with a known legit card, as in the first image here: http://pokegym.net/forums/showthread.php?t=64968

Yeah, they're fake. Well a lot of them seem to be anyway. Uh oh, best see if I can get in touch with the original seller as that is not exactly what I signed up for...

dammit, just as I get involved I get a ton of fake cards!!
I think about half of them are fake, maybe more. Which is a worry out of 4000 cards or so. I got a base fossil and jungle out of it and I think they're fine (I hope!) which is great but still, pretty much sucks |

Contact that seller right away!
A good way to tell fake cards from real is to compare your cards to scans on here or somewhere like PokeBeach. Another easy way is to look at the energy symbols. If they look bloated, they're probably fake.
