Power Tree says, "Once during each player's turn, if the player has no Special Energy cards in his or her discard pile, that player searches his or her discard pile for a basic Energy Card, shows it to the opponent, and puts it into his or her hand."

The card doesn't say, "that player MAY search his or her discard pile". Is this a forced effect?

Good question.

No, it is not mandatory that you use the search effect.
