can dark steelix with metal engery card attached it can be poisoned?

hi i was wondering, i was playing a game with my mate who played dark steelix from team rocket returns and he attached metal engery card on it and i was dark crobat and am i allowed poison him with 1 damage counters on it every turns? cos of metal pokemon with metal engery reduced 1 damage for me to attack so does special condition affected?

Are you using an old copy of the Rule Book?
Poison use to "do damage".
It was changed (years ago) to "place a damage counter".
Metal does not stop the placement of a damage counter. And, in any event, it would only protect from damage from an attack and Posion damage is not from an attack.

It takes the Poison damage counter.
