Matrix Energy=Bad Set?

Alright. So far there have been two American sets that have had 'Matrix' Energy in them-the holofoil basic energies.
These two sets are EX: Emerald and EX: Holon Phantoms.
In addition to Matrix Energy, there is one other thing these sets share in common. No, not Rare Candy, though they share that in common, too.
The thing they share in common is that they have relatively few cards in them that people view as good cards.
Many people said EX: Emerald was a bad set except for Battle Frontier, Medicham ex, and maybe a few other cards.
They're saying the same things about EX: Holon Phantoms. Some people like the Pidgeot, some people like Holon Adventurer, and some people like a few other cards. But almost everyone says that there are only a few, if any, good cards in the set.
Matrix Energy and being widely regarded as bad sets are the two things these sets have in common that no other set has. Sure, they both have rare candy, but so did EX: Ruby/Sapphire-but that was a good set.
So, I think I have determined that Nintendo decides to put Matrix Energy in sets that aren't very good in comparison to the sets that don't have Matrix Energy in them.
Doesn't really seem like a coincidence to me.

Well, we think the next format will be Em- on, and the one after that will be HP on, so is that a coincidence that they both have Basic Energy?

Those sets aren't bad to everyone. Actually, HP is my favorite set since Dragons.

eng HP => not so good set.

Card quality is very nice indeed....

jpn HP > eng HP (1 foil per booster+ matrix energy per box=>20 holo per box and 20 energy per box)

First off, candy was in sandstorm, not RS. Second, this set looks pretty interesting, and will most likely be the base for many decks after the rotation.

Interesting find...

IMO, there are mome decent Pokemon in Phantoms (Pidgeot as already mentioned, Vileplume being a personal favorite) compared to that of Emerald.

Trainers, in my opinion, are the major thing that really separates the two sets. While Emerald had a few crappy reprints, two decent reprints, and one overrated new card, Phantoms has one decent reprint and a decent new draw card, that being Holon Adventurer (think of it has the Team Rocket's Mission/Team Magma Schemer/Team Aqua Schemer of the new format). Holon Lake will probably be one of those stadiums that will see about as much play as Desert Ruins did this format.

Overall, however, if I were to buy booster boxes, it would be Unseen Forces over Holon Phantom simply because I can use a few cards from one set over the other >_>

The reason I said "of the new format" is because Holon Adventurer is going to be the only draw card (that we know of) of this effect that will available during the next format.

I assume you're not talking about EM-On or whatever.

EDIT: Oh, wait, maybe you are. Thought you meant cards that let you draw 3 cards, not cards where you discard a certain one to draw a fourth.

What I meant was it lets you discard 1 and draw (a guaranteed) 3 and 1 more if you discard a specifc kind...

you have to understand, pui has little to work with. the "bad cards" are promos. unlike emerald, this set is an actual japanese set+promos.
the only reason relicanth, for example, is a rare is because its an 80hp basic.

Well, that depends on how you look at it. There were enough cards in the QCP to make a standard japanese set, so IMO, it may as well have been one, which would make emerald a set+promos.

BT has a very good point. I see exactly what you mean, and I agree with your conclusions.

It does seem very interesting that a set everyone thinks will be terrible ends up having a bunch of cool energy in it...

(But no Heal or Scramble)

Interesting idea BT, but I really think it's meant to kind of "hint" at the set that'll start off the next block. I don't think that this set is bad at all, but yeah, it IS possible that to promote sales, Nintendo is putting these awesome energy into the set.

I love phantom, but the energy seem, ultimately, just as a marketing handicap-how can you outdo such an awesome set like Legend Maker with gift tin cards?

Seeing as how Rainbow took 2 sets after the rotation to return to modified, I would say the same thing for Scramble and Heal.

Yea...holon phantom looks like a very terrible set. I'll be surprised if anyone using a deck based around these new cards win any gym challenges at all.

not all the cards are good. personally i like the Primape. 130 for 3. 170 for 3 if it has an energy root on it.

I went to the prerelease mainly to get the foil energy. I got 60 of them!
