Gengar's Shadow Curse
The new Ex Legend Makers Gengar from the Shadowquake Theme Deck has a Poke-POWER that reads:
Shadow Curse If Gengar would be Knocked Out by damage from an okpponent's attack, you may put 3 damage counters on 1 of your opponent's Pokemon. Should you interpret this like (a) If you see an attack on your opponent's active pokemon that would definitely be able to knock out Gengar if your opponent used it, you may put three damage counters on 1 of your opponent's pokemon; (b) If you see an attack on your opponent's active pokemon that would, if your opponent flipped enough heads on a coin, would be able to knock out Gengar if your opponent used it, etc.; or (c) If your opponent actually tries to knock out Gengar with an attack that would normally knock out Gengar but somehow Gengar survives (like if Gengar had a Focus Band attached to him), etc. Thanks, Gengarex |

IF he is knocked out by damage, you put 3 counters on 1 of your opponents pokemon. If he is not knocked out by damage, the power doesn't activate.

That pokepower only activates when ANY attack from your opponent actually knocks out Gengar. So if Gengar is on your bench, and they use an attack like snaptail and knock you out, you put 3 damage counters on ANY of your opponents pokemon. But dont confuse this with damage counters, if an attack like liability or pure power were to knock Gengar out, its pokepower would do nothing. Hope I helped.

Well then, why does it read "If Gengar WOULD be knocked out" and not "If Gengar IS knocked out"?

Perhaps so that it's clear the damage is placed during your opponents turn, and not between turns?

Because when it IS Knocked Out it cant do anything. It has to strike back before its knocked out - common sense.

maybe the wording are not printed/worded well enough. self refering pokemon powers stil have the name of the pokemon instead of the word "itself".
such cards as metwo ds where "you may move any number of basic energy cards attached to one of your pokemon to your pokemon (excluding metwo ) in anyway u like" wouldnt it be better if they worded it like "you may move any number of basic energy cards attached to one of your pokemon to your pokemon (excluding this pokemon/card ) in anyway u like"
