I was just wondering. If you play candy on a charmander, do you have to evolve? I mean, the hand is not public knowledge, so I would assume you wouldn't have to.

You do have to evolve.
It's not public knowledge, but it's known to you whether you have an evo in your hand or not and the game knows that you know, since you're looking right at it.
