Assassin's Creed

Discussion ~

I just beat it today, fairly short, but than all of the Prince of Persia games are, pretty fun though, I liked the increased free-running, wasn't a big fan of the somewhat reduced combat system, even if it did introduce counter kills. The story is amazing, though.

Well, decreased combat is your own choice. Me, I'm less stealth more strike. Do I enjoy being a ninja? Yes, but not at the cost of getting to use those awesome counter-strikes and dodging. Not to mention it's fun to cut down an entire platoon, have the last guy get freaked and run away, only to find himsefl with either my throwing knife or my hidden blade lodged in him.

The word you're looking for is opinion, and no it isn't, if you've played the 2nd and 3rd games in the PoP trilogy you'd understand their combat system is ultimately superior, albeit it doesn't have as interesting non-sword weapons.

You shouldn't say reduced in the first place since this isn't a Prince of Persia game. =_=; Inferior, perhaps, but not reduced.

Hmmm...set in the middle east, same people made it, forget the art style being exactly the same, main characters look alike. Yeah... =\

And tell me something Jake, if it's the same game, then why does it have a different name, different plot, different concept, etc. (of course, I've never played PoP, so if it is all about ninja assassins running around on rooftops and killing people, then you've got me there). The combat is different for a reason, it's a DIFFERENT GAME. They wanted to take a different approach, hence it is a different combat system. BNo matter what it looks like, where the setting is, or who made it, if the game mechanics and main plotline are different, it is a different game. I mean, c'mon, the same guys made both Warcraft and Starcraft. do they look like the same game to you? They aren't even the same genre.

PoP and AC are. And since when do you fix something when it isn't broken, all they failed to do was slap the PoP title to it and then no one would question it, which shows how irrelevant that is, and the idea was that the developers obviously had the resources to make the combat system as fun as the free-running was, but they chose not to.

It is an entirely different concept. They are in no way the same game. You have none of the same characters, it's in Israel, not Persia, it's not even in the Middle East technically, it all takes place in a fancy laboratory, the concept is not about fighting but basically being a ninja (using the term lightly, to describe someone who jumps around stealthily and kill people when their backs are turned, not up close and personal, wink wink nudge nudge), and the genre is, if you want to look at it technically, sci-fi. It's not the same game, it's entirely different, and I guarantee you that if they had in fact slapped the PoP label on it heads would have turned and people would begin to immensely doubt either the back plot of the PoP games (seeing it as another "memory") or the sanity of the people who named it.

The word you're looking for is assassin.

Also, the game's genre is not sci-fi. A game's genre is defined by core gameplay elements. The story of Assassin's Creed may be sci-fi, but the game itself is not. For example, as far as genres go, Super Robot Wars and Final Fantasy Tactics are the same.

Yeah, but they arae not the same game, and when I say they aren't the same genre (talking about AC and PoP again now) I mean a portion of the gameplay and much of the affecting backstory make sci-fi it's sub-genre, something that PoP does not have.

The word is assassin, but I use the term ninja because there is very little difference in this context and for some reason ninja sounds cooler (you'd think assassin would be cooler, but no)

No, the story has nothing to do with the genre of the game. Sci-fi is not a sub-genre of action-adventure games. However, strategy RPG is a sub-genre of RPG because SRPGs are different enough in core gameplay elements to demand a sub-genre of their own, but not different enough to cut ties with RPGs altogether.

I never claimed SRW and FFT were the same game, but they are definately the same genre. It doesn't matter that one's set in the future with giant robots from multiple series and the other is set in a fantasy world.

PoP and Assassin's Creed are the same genre because they share the core gameplay elements of action-adventure games. Of course there are gameplay differences! It'd be pretty boring if all action games played exactly the same way. Same genre in no way implies that the games are the same, nor does it imply that they play the same way.

Alright, I'm dropping this argument. It's not worth fighting about.

The point is, AC and PoP are different games, for two reasons:

1. Completely different storyline

From what I gather, PoP follows a beggar/prince as he follows the usual basic storyline of "save the princess from the evil man who has kidnapped/tricked her". Assassin's Creed follows an elite assassin going around Islam during the Crusade killing people who have wronged others (I'm only through the fat merchant king and the Regent guy, so if anything's to the contrary as the targets are implying, please do not tell me), and being a ninja/assassin.

2. Different gameplay

In PoP, it's all about the combat, hence why the combat system is better than in AC. AC is all about being silent and stealthy , killing people when no one's looking (or when they're looking for that matter, as long as you don't get caught. I can kill a guard right near other guards and they won't even notice. What fun!), and jumping around on rooftops. Let's see the Prince do that!

The Prince did have a somewhat-parallel to stealth-assassinations in speed-kills, they were more difficult to pull off, but then again that did add more depth to the combat system.

Yeah, this is not a game I play for the story. I'm going to play it through to the last mission, then I'm going to stop and jsut go around playing with the killing features fo the game for a while, just for the heck of it, without even properly finishing the game.
