Memphis Gymn Challenge-Mini report

Today we had the Gym Challenge in Memphis and quite a shebang it was..

I, being the glorious player that I am, was 2 for 5. Playing GardyEX is just not my thing I guess.

But today was not my day...It belonged to 3 great folks who will be making the trip to Orlando to participate in the WORLDS.

1stly-- in the 15+ division-- St. Louis's own NEWMAN pulled out the victory in a star studded cast of folks from Mississippi, Tennessee and Missouri. You folks up in St. Louis won't have Newman to worry about next week. He played GardyEX to a tee (beating me in a well played mirror-slugfest)

2ndly -- in the 11-14 division-- Memphis favorite, State Champion, David Coates (Moltres423 on these boards). He was playing everyone's BR (no amphy). Going 4-1 in the prelims.

And MOST importantly to me.....10- -- The winner was my very own....Dragonite Girl herself---Taylor Mitchell . She went undefeated for the day 11-0 in games played. She was playing SwampEX/SuicuneEX and it never let her down. After a string of 3rd place finishes in City, State and Gym Challenge Tournies, she stood in there tough and beat ALL comers...including the 2 great guys whom she had a combined tournament record of 0-13 games against.
Tonight she is wandering arouond the house in a daze. She still can't believe she won. To be honest, its hard to believe it myself

We had a field of 52? at the tourney today, around 20 of those being 10-. I really appreciate all the support everyone gave Taylor today, especially you guys who came down from St. Louis. Once she gets her posting privileges, I will let her come and give any commentary she might have (kinda tough for a 10 year to do).

Oh and very importantly..Thanks to Niesha, our gym leader here in Memphis and Vince for making the day go smooth as silk (or at least making it "appear" to be smooth).

Next weekend---ST LOUIS GYM CHALLENGE---WHO WILL BE the KING/QUEEN of MAY. Good Luck to everyone there. (you can beat those guys Scykid )

Well, looks like I missed the spot of first report posted. But it usually takes me a while to type up such things what with interruptions and all. ^_~ And one little correction, David did tech a 1-0-1 line of Amphy in the deck, unlike myself who decided to run the deck Amphyless. Congrats to Taylor and David, they played a great tourny.

Check out mine here: http://pokegym.net/showthread.php?t=6858

Yeah it rarely saw any kind of play though. I'm thinking about taking it out for some switching cards since it was a more inconvinence to have it in there.Congratulations to Taylor for winning the 10-!

sorry, we are too busy. I have a cookout next weekend with some of my students. I had scheduled it around both Nashville and Memphis GCs. I would love to come up and play and show you that I really don't suck at Pokemon. We will see you in Orlando I am sure. good luck next week

Congrats to Taylor! 25 10- at Memphis??!! WOW...I wish Alex could have been there to play. Instead, we had friends in from out of town and Alex just went to our local league play on Sat. in Sevierville and went 5-0 there. Maybe we will see some of you in Chattanooga at the pre-release of EX HL.

I think it was more like 20 10-, I got my 10- and 11-15 mixed together. We had 51 at the whole tourney.

Mad props to Taylor, David, Newman and the rest of the field! This was a star studded event.

It all ran smoothly in spite of the TMS software.

Also have to give props to the Gym Challenge winners who dropped out letting the others play for the title! Alan S. and Andrew K. both great players!!!

ALLRIGHT! Time to gear for St. Louis....all you ST. Louis People - GO GET SOME SLEEP!!! LOL

I agree, they are great players, but I ask this Q....should they have played the GC in the first place if they were going to "drop out" AFTER making top 4/8?? What about the other players they played in the swiss rounds and lost to them? Those players would have gotten a different draw and possibly made it into the top 4/8 themselvesw/o those losses? Also, were the opponents in the top4/8 who was supposed to face Andrew K. and Alan S. simply given byes into the next round of finals? Is this fair to the other players who had a live player to defeat in best 2of 3 format? Please advice Vince as this Q could come up again in St. Louis and elsewhere this wkend.

I want to encourage everyone to come and play. Big Pokemon events are too few and far between to miss out on, especially ones of a Gym Challenge caliber.

According to POP, if a player who has one a Gym Challenge wins another one, then the prize passes down to the second place player. One player cannot win twice.

I always felt that was kind of odd, in that you have a top player entering the elimination rounds, eliminating all the players that he can.

True, they will beat people in the Swiss rounds, but my policy is that if a player plays in the swiss rounds, qualifies for the elimination rounds, then drops before the elimination rounds begin(allowing a full field to play in the elimination rounds) then that player will be given a bonus by me.

These drops will NOT cause byes in the elimination rounds, but instead that the next player (#9) will step in and play in the place of the dropping player in the top 8.

This allows the player to increase their standing in the POP rankings by playing and enjoying an event, gives them bonus product, and other incentives to come and play. For the 15+ players who won, I offer them to either judge or play, some exceptions.

For the 15+ champion from Memphis from St. Louis, I believe that he is going to come and judge for me.

I will see you all in a few days!!!

Meganium45

who are you lawman? PM me if you do not want your ID posted on the boards

Hey Vince....thx for the answer. I have no problems with them playing if other players are moved into the elim. rds in their place (ie 9th place in top 8) I just thought it would be unfair to the other top 4/8 players if the drop out caused another player to receive a bye into the next rd w/o a match played. For everyone else's benefit, I am new to the boards here, but my son has been in Pokemon league in Sevierville for 5 yrs. now and I help out there and travel to Chattanooga for some of ScythKing's Toury's and went to Nashville for States and GC.

Play what your comfortable with. You dont need luck from me, just some confidence. Its not like you dont know the rules of the game. You can compete with guys if you decide you can and win.
